To loop an MP4 into a continuous YouTube Live stream, run FFmpeg with -re -stream_loop -1 and send its output to the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. The loop only repeats the file: your computer, FFmpeg process, network, and YouTube ingest must still stay available. Here’s how to set it up and what to check before leaving it running.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel that is eligible to livestream. YouTube’s current getting-started guidance says the channel must be verified, have had no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. YouTube: Get started with live streaming
- FFmpeg installed on a computer that can remain powered on and connected to the internet for the duration of the stream.
- An MP4 file with video and, if needed, audio streams compatible with your chosen YouTube ingest settings.
- The stream URL and key for an encoder stream in YouTube Studio. Treat the key like a password; reset it in Live Control Room if it is exposed.
Create the YouTube encoder stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room. Create or select a stream set up for streaming software or an encoder.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. Use the exact values YouTube displays; do not share the key or put it in a public script repository. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains where to find the ingest details and stream preview.
- Use RTMPS when your FFmpeg build and setup support it. YouTube recommends RTMPS because it carries RTMP over TLS/SSL, encrypting the connection. YouTube: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
Check the MP4 before streaming
Stream copy avoids decoding and re-encoding, but it is not a compatibility fix. First inspect the file’s streams and parameters, for example with ffprobe -hide_banner input.mp4. Check the video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, and whether audio is present. Compare those values with YouTube’s current encoder settings table: it lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and CBR. The supported combination and recommended bitrate depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate.
If the file’s streams do not fit the ingest settings you plan to use, re-encode instead of copying. Re-encoding gives you control over output parameters, but adds processing work; stream copy is lighter but requires a compatible source.
Start an infinite MP4 loop with FFmpeg
Replace input.mp4, the example ingest URL, and the example key with your own values. The URL below is a placeholder, not a working destination:

-rereads the file at its native frame rate rather than sending it as fast as the computer can process it.-stream_loop -1repeats the input indefinitely.-c:v copy -c:a copycopies the video and audio streams without re-encoding. Use this only when the source is compatible with YouTube’s ingest requirements.-f flvselects the FLV output format commonly used for RTMP/RTMPS delivery.
This is a command shape built from FFmpeg’s documented options, not a tested command for your particular file, FFmpeg build, or ingest URL. Confirm the output URL format accepted by your FFmpeg setup and use the exact ingest information from YouTube Studio. Re-encode when stream copy is incompatible
Choose output codec, frame rate, keyframe interval, and bitrate from YouTube’s current table for the resolution and frame rate you intend to send. For example, YouTube recommends a 5 Mbps video bitrate for H.264 at 1080p30; that figure is not a universal setting for other formats or frame rates. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Follow its table and test the actual output rather than assuming the source file’s settings will work unchanged. Test the stream before relying on it
- Start the FFmpeg command and check that it connects without errors and continues processing the file.
- In Live Control Room, wait for the stream preview. Check both picture and sound, including movement and audio levels, before starting or relying on the event.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health indicator while testing. YouTube recommends monitoring audio and video quality and testing settings before a live stream. Encoder settings and monitoring guidance
- Test from the same computer and network you intend to use for the continuous stream. YouTube says total outgoing bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Network interruptions can still disrupt delivery. YouTube: Streaming tips
Keep the stream running—and understand the limits
An infinite input loop is not the same as a guaranteed 24/7 broadcast. FFmpeg must keep running; the host computer must stay on; the network path and YouTube ingest must remain healthy. A process exit, computer restart, power loss, or network disruption can stop delivery.
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation shows a recovery configuration that retries output after temporary network failure, including retrying every second. That can help with temporary output failures, but it does not guarantee an uninterrupted event or restart FFmpeg if the process itself exits. FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation

Plan for YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube says encoder streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not promise automatic archiving for a stream lasting 12 hours or longer. If you need a durable full-length copy of a continuous broadcast, arrange a separate local recording and verify the archive behavior for your workflow. YouTube encoder setup guidance
Common problems and fixes

Copyright and reused content still apply
Streaming a file rather than a camera feed does not change the need for rights to the footage, music, and other material in it. Review YouTube’s rules before using content you did not create or license, and consider whether a continuous loop adds meaningful original value rather than merely repeating material.
