Bitrate matters more when it comes to whether your chosen resolution can hold up reliably. Resolution sets the detail of the incoming picture; bitrate is the data available to encode it. You also need to account for frame rate and codec. Choose a combination your upload connection can sustain steadily, then test it with representative motion and audio. A stable 1080p stream can look better in practice than a higher-resolution stream that keeps dropping frames or buffering.
Resolution and bitrate do different jobs
Resolution describes the dimensions of the video you send to YouTube. Bitrate describes how much data per second is available to encode that video. Higher resolution usually needs more data to preserve detail, and higher frame rates can raise the recommended bitrate too. The codec also matters: YouTube’s live recommendations differ for H.264 and for AV1 or H.265.
So the useful question is not which setting wins in isolation. It is whether your bitrate, resolution, frame rate and codec form a combination your encoder and outbound connection can sustain. Fast movement and detailed scenes can make encoding limits more visible than a mostly static shot. Test with content that resembles the real stream.
YouTube Live’s recommended bitrate targets
YouTube Help’s current live-ingestion table gives these recommended video bitrates. The targets depend on resolution, frame rate and codec; they are not YouTube’s separate minimum settings. The page does not show a publication date, and these figures were accessed in 2026.

| Resolution and frame rate | AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 4K/2160p30 | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 4K/2160p60 | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
For example, “1080p60” alone is not enough to identify the target: YouTube recommends 12 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 and 17 Mbps for H.264. Use the row matching the codec actually sent to YouTube. These are recommended live-ingestion settings, not guarantees of a particular picture quality.
YouTube’s encoder guidance also calls for constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds), and supports frame rates up to 60 fps. It lists RTMP/RTMPS as streaming protocols and H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 as video codec options. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate table.

Choose a setting your connection can sustain
- Pick the frame rate for the material. Consider 60 fps when smooth motion matters, but account for its higher recommended bitrate at many resolutions. For a static lecture or documentary discussion, a lower frame rate may be sufficient; judge using the actual footage and intended presentation.
- Set a resolution you can usefully deliver. Choose a mode supported by your camera or source, encoder and audience needs. A higher setting is not automatically better if it forces an unstable bitrate.
- Check outbound upload capacity. Download speed is not the relevant limit for sending a live feed. YouTube recommends leaving 20% of available upload bandwidth as headroom, and notes that other users or devices sharing the network can reduce what is available to the stream. Its page does not state a publication date; this is current guidance accessed in 2026. Read YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Match the bitrate target to codec and mode. Use YouTube’s recommended live target for the chosen resolution, frame rate and codec. Do not confuse the recommended target with the lower minimum value.
- Test and monitor. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test with representative movement and audio, then monitor stream health and respond to alerts during the broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.
- Reduce the load if the stream is unstable. Lower resolution or frame rate, then test again. A stable feed is a better choice than a nominally sharper one that the connection cannot sustain.
Keep live-stream settings separate from upload settings
Do not use YouTube’s upload-video bitrate recommendations as a substitute for its live-ingestion table. The workflows have different recommendations. For instance, YouTube’s SDR upload guidance lists 8 Mbps for 1080p at standard frame rate and 12 Mbps at high frame rate, while its live table recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for H.264 1080p60. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.
The quality you send is also not necessarily the exact rendition every viewer receives. YouTube says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers’ devices and network conditions; the creator chooses the incoming feed quality.

When latency matters more than resolution
Latency is the delay between capture or encoding and playback. It is a separate choice from the resolution-versus-bitrate tradeoff. Lower latency can increase buffering, according to YouTube, so it is most useful when you need to interact with viewers quickly rather than for a one-way presentation. YouTube says 4K/2160p streams use normal latency and do not offer its low-latency optimization. Details are in YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
