You can keep a YouTube Live broadcast running from a home server by looping a video or playlist through FFmpeg and sending the resulting feed to YouTube’s RTMPS ingest. The server, FFmpeg process, power, and internet connection then need to stay available; a command alone does not make the setup fail-proof. This guide covers channel eligibility, encoder settings, an illustrative single-video command, continuous-broadcast behavior, testing, and common failure points.
What a 24/7 YouTube stream involves
In this setup, FFmpeg reads media stored on your server, sends audio and video to YouTube Live, and YouTube makes the broadcast available to viewers. For the channel to remain live, the server must keep running FFmpeg and maintain a working internet connection and power supply.
YouTube treats the incoming feed and the viewer-facing broadcast as separate resources: the stream is the incoming audio-video feed, while a broadcast is the watchable event. That distinction matters if you want one continuous watch page rather than a new video for each scheduled event. YouTube’s API guide, updated 2026-09-14 UTC, describes using one stream for an ongoing 24/7 broadcast while also starting a separate broadcast from that feed; ending the secondary broadcast does not stop the ongoing one. Read Google’s explanation of broadcasts and streams.
Check channel eligibility and prepare the server
Confirm that the channel can livestream
YouTube Help says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live to access Live Control Room. For an encoder setup, obtain the stream URL and stream key there. Labels and available controls may vary as YouTube updates Studio.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your channel. Do not put it in a public script repository, video, screenshot, or shared log. Store it in a private environment file or another secret store, limit file permissions, and replace the key in Live Control Room if it is exposed.
Check what the server has to sustain
- Keep the server powered on and prevent scheduled sleep or shutdown.
- Confirm that the media files remain accessible at stable paths and that the server has enough free storage for any local archives you plan to retain.
- Use a wired connection where practical and test the actual upload connection during the times you expect to stream. YouTube recommends choosing settings that the available connection can reliably sustain.
- Plan how you will detect and recover from a stopped FFmpeg process, lost connection, or server restart. A running command in a terminal is not by itself a restart or monitoring plan.
The official sources cited here do not establish a minimum CPU, RAM, or disk specification for a particular home-server workload. Processing needs depend on whether FFmpeg copies compatible streams or encodes them, and on the chosen media and settings. You do not need to buy a particular model based on this guide.
Choose RTMPS and appropriate encoder settings
Use the stream URL exposed in Live Control Room and prefer RTMPS when your encoder supports it. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP carried over TLS/SSL. Select the ingest protocol and URL that correspond to the stream configuration shown in Studio; do not assume a URL from another setup will work. YouTube’s RTMPS instructions cover the encrypted connection.
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; up to 60 frames per second; constant bitrate (CBR) encoding; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, which must not exceed four seconds for the listed setup. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees that a home uplink or FFmpeg build will behave reliably. Check YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

H.264 bitrate examples from YouTube
The following are YouTube’s stated H.264 examples, not measurements of your connection:
| Output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
Choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain continuously, with headroom for normal variation. A brief speed test is useful but cannot prove that a connection will remain stable all day. YouTube recommends testing before going live and watching stream health once the feed is running.
Send a looping video to YouTube with FFmpeg
This example is illustrative, not a tested end-to-end recipe. It assumes an FFmpeg build with the required input and H.264/AAC encoding support, a local video file, an audio track if you want audio, and an RTMPS URL and stream key from your own Live Control Room. Adapt the paths, codec, frame rate, bitrate, and URL to your media and channel. FFmpeg’s official command-line reference documents its options and stream selection: FFmpeg documentation.
1. Set the ingest URL and key privately
In the shell session that will launch FFmpeg, set the RTMPS server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Keep the key out of the command history where possible. For example, load them from a private environment file with restrictive permissions; the names below are placeholders, not literal credentials:

export YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL='rtmps://YOUR-INGEST-SERVER-FROM-LIVE-CONTROL-ROOM/YOUR-INGEST-PATH'
export YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY='YOUR-PRIVATE-STREAM-KEY'
Use the exact server URL and key supplied for your stream. Do not publish those values or include them in a public example.
2. Start with one compatible video file
For a 1080p30 H.264 output, this command asks FFmpeg to read the local file in real time, loop it, encode video and audio, set a two-second keyframe interval, and send the result to the RTMPS endpoint:
ffmpeg -hide_banner -re -stream_loop -1
-i "/srv/video/documentary.mp4"
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0?
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
-r 30 -b:v 14M -maxrate 14M -bufsize 28M
-g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "${YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL}/${YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY}"
The 14 Mbps video bitrate shown is YouTube’s recommended H.264 value for 1080p30; it is not a universal setting or a promise that your connection can handle it. If your media is not 1080p30, or your server’s upload capacity cannot sustain that rate, adjust the output and bitrate together. The optional audio map means FFmpeg can continue when the file has no audio stream; remove it or change the audio settings if you need a different audio layout. Confirm that your FFmpeg build includes the selected encoder.
-stream_loop -1 requests indefinite input looping, while -re reads the media at its recorded rate rather than trying to send it as fast as possible. The video is transcoded to H.264 and audio to AAC; transcoding takes processing resources and can alter the media. If your sources already match the required output and you want to avoid re-encoding, FFmpeg stream copy may be an option, but only where the source codecs and stream characteristics are compatible with the ingest and intended output. Stream copy does not convert media. Test the actual files and resulting feed rather than assuming all files in a collection will behave alike.

3. Verify the feed before depending on it
- Start the command and open the stream preview in Live Control Room. Confirm that video, audio, framing, and playback are correct.
- Check the stream-health indicators in Studio and monitor audio and video quality. Resolve warnings before treating the stream as operational.
- Open the channel’s watch page and check playback on a phone or other relevant device.
- If you record a local archive, check that the file grows and can be opened. If you configure a backup encoder, test failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its network connection, then confirm that the player rolls over as intended.
YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend previewing, testing, and monitoring. Testing a feed once does not establish that it will remain available indefinitely. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep FFmpeg running and plan for failures
For a continuous channel, run FFmpeg under an operating-system service manager or another supervisor that can start it on boot and restart it after an unexpected exit. Configure the supervisor for the account and paths used by your server, keep the stream key private, and inspect logs without exposing credentials. The exact service configuration depends on the operating system and service manager; this guide does not claim a tested unit file or automatic reconnection behavior for a specific FFmpeg build.
Separate three recovery problems in your plan: FFmpeg exiting, the server rebooting or losing power, and the network or YouTube ingest connection dropping. A process supervisor can address an exited process, but it cannot restore electricity or internet access. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend testing failover where configured; verify your own recovery behavior instead of assuming that a retry option or an automatic restart will preserve the broadcast.
Continuous broadcast or separate event videos?
If viewers should always return to one watch page, configure the intended ongoing broadcast in Live Control Room and keep the feed connected to it. If you also need distinct event videos, treat those as separate broadcasts and test how they relate to the continuous feed. Google’s API guide describes one stream being bound to up to three live broadcasts; that API detail is most relevant to automation and managing multiple broadcasts, not a requirement to program against the API for an ordinary Studio setup.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
YouTube’s advice to stop an encoder after an event applies to ordinary event workflows. For an intentionally continuous broadcast, do not end the ongoing broadcast merely because one secondary event has finished; verify the desired broadcast status and the viewer-facing page in Studio.
Copyright, repeated media, and channel policy
Only stream video and audio you have permission to use for this purpose. Possessing a file or being able to loop it does not itself establish the right to broadcast it. Copyright issues and eligibility for monetization under YouTube’s reused-content rules are separate questions; a technically successful, always-on feed does not settle either one. Review the current rules that apply to your channel and the material before scheduling a continuous stream.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg cannot connect or reports an SSL error | Ingest protocol, server URL, or port | Confirm that both the protocol and server are the RTMPS values shown in Live Control Room. YouTube’s RTMPS help page suggests port 443 if needed. |
| Live Control Room receives no feed | URL, key, FFmpeg output, or channel eligibility | Recheck the exact URL and key, confirm the FFmpeg process is still running, and verify channel eligibility and restrictions in Studio. |
| Feed connects but has warnings or poor playback | Bitrate, keyframe interval, frame rate, or upload stability | Compare the output settings with YouTube’s current recommendations, lower the output burden if the connection cannot sustain it, and monitor stream health during a representative test. |
| Video works but there is no audio | Input audio stream or mapping | Check whether the source file has an audio stream and whether the selected FFmpeg audio map and encoder match it. |
| The feed stops after a server or process interruption | Power, network, supervisor, or reconnection behavior | Identify which layer failed, verify the supervisor’s startup and restart settings, and test recovery deliberately. Do not assume FFmpeg or YouTube will reconnect in a particular way without confirming your setup. |
| The channel is live but viewers cannot find the intended video | Broadcast and stream status or watch-page setup | Check the broadcast’s status and viewer-facing page in Live Control Room; an incoming feed and a watchable broadcast are related but distinct resources. |
