To stream a local video file to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, create or open a YouTube live event, copy its server URL and stream key, then send FFmpeg a real-time H.264/AAC output using FLV over the event’s ingest connection. Use YouTube’s recommended RTMPS destination when available, choose a bitrate for your output profile and upload connection, and test the feed in YouTube before the event.
Before you start
- Your YouTube channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days, and meet YouTube’s minimum age requirement of 16 to live stream. Check access before troubleshooting FFmpeg. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Install an FFmpeg build that includes the encoder and protocol you plan to use. The example below uses
libx264, AAC, and RTMPS; builds can differ. - Have the local video file available and confirm it contains the video and any audio you expect viewers to hear.
- Make sure your upload connection can sustain the chosen output bitrate with headroom. A connection that fluctuates or is close to the stream’s bitrate can cause interruptions or poor quality.
YouTube’s live-event interface and eligibility requirements can change. The following workflow reflects its official documentation checked on October 3, 2026; use the values shown for your own event as authoritative.
Get the YouTube ingest URL and stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and enter the live-stream workflow. Create a live event or select the event you intend to use.
- In the event’s encoder or stream settings, copy the server URL and stream key. YouTube instructs encoder users to enter both values; the key identifies the feed YouTube should accept. Prefer the RTMPS destination when it is offered.
- Use the exact endpoint and key displayed for that event. Do not guess a generic ingest URL or assume every encoder presents the address and key in the same format. YouTube’s Live API describes separate ingestion-address and stream-name fields, while the encoder interface may require you to combine values.
A stream key is a credential: YouTube describes it as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep it out of public tutorials, screenshots, shared commands, and logs. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube and update the encoder. Avoid running a command containing the key in a shared session; command-line arguments may also be visible to local users or tools.
Choose a compatible output profile
For a straightforward FFmpeg setup, H.264 video with AAC audio is a practical starting point. YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance also lists H.265 or AV1 video and MP3 audio, but availability depends on the encoder build and settings. YouTube supports up to 60 frames per second and recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds.

Match resolution, frame rate, and bitrate
Inspect the source’s resolution, frame rate, and audio before choosing the output. Avoid upscaling a small source or selecting a profile your network cannot sustain. YouTube detects resolution and frame rate automatically by default; manual settings are available with custom stream-key configuration. Use the bitrate row for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance, rather than treating one bitrate as universal.
| H.264 output profile | YouTube minimum upload speed | YouTube recommended upload speed |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s listed ingestion recommendations, not independent performance measurements or guarantees. Choose a stable connection with sufficient capacity for the selected stream, and consider a lower profile if your upload varies.

Set keyframes and audio sensibly
A two-second GOP means setting the keyframe interval to roughly twice the output frame rate: for example, 60 frames at 30 fps. The command below uses that 30 fps example. For another frame rate, change the GOP so its duration remains about two seconds. YouTube’s advanced guidance also recommends square pixels, progressive scan, 44.1 kHz stereo audio, 128 kbps stereo audio, and Rec. 709 for SDR.
Stream the file with FFmpeg
Adapt this example for a 30 fps H.264/AAC output:
ffmpeg -re -i "input.mp4"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast
-b:v 5000k -maxrate 5000k -bufsize 10000k
-pix_fmt yuv420p -g 60
-c:a aac -b:a 128k
-f flv "rtmps://<YouTube-ingestion-host>/<app>/<STREAM_KEY>"
Replace input.mp4 with the local file path and replace the endpoint and key placeholders with the values for your event. The example’s bitrate and GOP are illustrative starting values, not a universal YouTube profile: select a bitrate suitable for the output and connection, and adjust -g for the actual frame rate. FFmpeg’s documentation describes -re for reading an input in real time and demonstrates FLV output to an RTMP server. YouTube accepts RTMP and RTMPS ingestion and recommends RTMPS.

The command is assembled from official FFmpeg and YouTube documentation, but it has not been tested with your file, FFmpeg build, event, or network. Codec support, audio mapping, endpoint format, and source properties vary. If a file has no audio, remove the audio options or explicitly map available streams; if it has multiple tracks, check which one FFmpeg selects rather than assuming the intended track is used.
Test the feed, monitor it, and stop cleanly
- For a rehearsal, use a private or unlisted event where appropriate. Start FFmpeg and wait for YouTube’s preview to show the expected video and audio.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and watch for dropped or unstable delivery. Test representative movement and sound, not just a static frame or silent segment.
- Monitor audio and video quality throughout the event. If the preview is unstable, lower the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a profile your upload connection can sustain, then test again.
- When the event is over, stop the event in YouTube and stop FFmpeg. Do not assume that ending the local input completes every event action automatically.
YouTube recommends testing before an event and monitoring the live stream. See encoder setup guidance and live-streaming help.

Troubleshoot common failures
| What you see | What to check | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube receives no stream | Channel eligibility, event status, copied server URL and key, and whether the endpoint and protocol match. | Confirm live access; open the intended event; copy its current ingest values again; use the event’s RTMPS endpoint when available. |
| FFmpeg reports an encoder or protocol error | Whether your FFmpeg build includes libx264 and the required network protocol. |
Check the build’s available encoders and protocols, then use a compatible build or supported encoder. |
| Preview appears, but delivery is unstable or looks poor | Output bitrate and profile against sustained upload capacity; YouTube’s health messages. | Reduce bitrate, resolution, or frame rate to a stable profile and repeat the test. |
| Video appears without expected sound | Whether the file contains an audio track and which track FFmpeg is using. | Inspect the source and map the intended audio stream, or remove audio encoding options if the file is meant to be silent. |
| Key or connection is rejected | Whether the key belongs to the selected event and whether the endpoint was copied exactly. | Copy both values again from the event’s encoder settings. If a key was exposed, reset it and update the command. |
This order is a practical way to narrow down faults; YouTube does not publish it as a required diagnostic sequence.
