To broadcast a playlist of video files from a Windows PC, play the files through an encoder such as OBS Studio and send the encoder’s feed to YouTube Live. YouTube playlists organize videos already hosted on YouTube; they do not turn a set of videos into a live broadcast. For a local-file playlist, install VLC and use OBS’s VLC Video Source, then connect OBS to a stream in YouTube Studio. The PC, files, and internet connection must stay available while the local setup is streaming.
First, decide which kind of playlist you mean
Local video files you want to broadcast
This is the workflow in this guide: OBS plays your files in sequence and sends the resulting live feed to YouTube. OBS Project community guidance identifies its VLC Video Source as a playlist-capable option when VLC is installed. The exact interface and compatibility can vary with the versions and setup you use. See the OBS Project forum discussion.
Videos already hosted on YouTube
A regular YouTube playlist is for organizing and watching videos hosted on YouTube; it is not a live encoder feed. YouTube documents playlist management separately from live streaming. Do not extract playback links or rebroadcast other creators’ videos without the necessary rights. See YouTube’s playlist guide.
Check channel eligibility and prepare your files
- Your channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, according to YouTube’s computer livestreaming guidance.
- YouTube says users must be at least 16 to livestream. If this is your first livestream, enablement can take up to 24 hours.
- Use video and audio you have the rights to broadcast, including any music, footage, and other material within the files.
- Make sure all playlist files are accessible on the PC for the entire broadcast. An external SSD is optional if you need more storage; it is not a required streaming device.
- Test playback order, image, and sound before the event. A local playlist source is separate from YouTube’s live event controls.

Set up the local playlist in OBS
- Install OBS Studio and VLC on the Windows PC. VLC is needed for the OBS VLC Video Source approach described in OBS Project community guidance.
- In OBS, create a scene for the broadcast. Add a VLC Video Source and configure it with the local video files you want played as a playlist. Labels and options may differ by version.
- Check that the files play in the intended order and that the audio is audible in OBS. Resolve missing files or audio before connecting to YouTube.
- Keep the files in place and available while streaming. If you move or rename them after configuring the source, check the playlist again.
Create the YouTube Live connection
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create a stream or select the stream you intend to use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into OBS’s streaming settings. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup sequence and use the connection information for the selected stream.
- Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in the live stream settings and update OBS with the replacement.
- Start streaming from OBS, then check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. Start the event using the Live Control Room controls as appropriate for the selected setup; sending an encoder feed does not necessarily make the event live for viewers by itself.

Choose settings that your upload connection can sustain
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance to choose a resolution, bitrate, and other settings that suit the output you intend to send. The connection that matters for sending the stream is upload capacity, not just download speed. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload bandwidth headroom, and advises testing before going live.

- Do not choose a bitrate that consumes nearly all available upload capacity; leave the recommended headroom for connection variation and other household or office traffic.
- Confirm the OBS output and YouTube preview look and sound right before inviting viewers.
- Most standard encoder setups use the stream URL and key. YouTube also documents HLS ingestion, but its protocol-specific requirements apply only if you deliberately choose HLS rather than an ordinary RTMP/RTMPS workflow. For HLS, YouTube specifies 1–4 second segments and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments; this transport playlist is not a viewer-facing video playlist.

Keep the stream running and plan for the replay
With a local encoder, OBS is doing the playback and sending work on your Windows PC. Keep the PC powered on, OBS running, source files accessible, and the internet connection available for the duration you expect to broadcast. If any of those stops, the local feed can stop as well.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a longer uninterrupted broadcast will be saved as one complete replay; check YouTube’s current controls and archival behavior against your planned duration. This archive limit is separate from whether the live feed itself keeps running.
Troubleshoot common problems
The live preview does not appear
- Confirm OBS is sending to the stream URL and key for the stream selected in Live Control Room.
- Check that you started streaming in OBS and use the Live Control Room preview and start controls for the event. An encoder connection alone may not start the viewer-facing event.
- If the key may have been exposed or changed, reset it in YouTube Studio and replace the saved key in OBS.
The playlist does not play or a file is missing
- Confirm VLC is installed and the OBS VLC Video Source is configured with the intended local files.
- Check that the paths still point to files that exist and are readable, then test the playlist in OBS before going live.
- Verify playback order and sound in the scene; OBS community guidance is not a guarantee that every version or configuration behaves identically.
The stream buffers or loses quality
- Check upload capacity rather than relying on download speed alone, and reduce output demands if needed to preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Test the connection and encoder before the event, then inspect YouTube’s stream health information during the broadcast.
The PC or connection goes offline
A local OBS stream depends on the Windows PC, the files, and the local internet connection. Restore those and verify OBS and Live Control Room are sending and receiving the feed again. If you need a broadcast to continue without leaving a home PC running, a cloud playout setup is an alternative.
