How to Prevent a Raspberry Pi from Overheating During a 24/7 YouTube Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Measure the Pi while it is doing the real streaming work, then address what the readings show: improve airflow, check the power supply, and add a model-compatible cooler if sustained heat is causing throttling. Raspberry Pi’s thermal management protects the chip by reducing performance when it gets hot; cooling can help preserve performance, but it cannot guarantee a reliable broadcast.

Check temperature and throttling during the stream

On Raspberry Pi OS, open a terminal and run these commands while the stream is running:

vcgencmd measure_temp
vcgencmd get_throttled
  • vcgencmd measure_temp reports the SoC temperature.
  • vcgencmd get_throttled reports current and historical status flags, including thermal throttling and undervoltage. Because power problems can also trigger flags, do not assume every performance issue is caused by heat.

Raspberry Pi Ltd documents a thermal-management limit of 85°C for the models covered by its hardware documentation. Arm cores are progressively throttled between 80°C and 85°C; at 85°C, both Arm and GPU are throttled. These are protective controls, not a universal temperature target for every streaming setup. Throttling reduces performance; the documentation does not say that reaching the threshold means the Pi will shut down.

Check readings during a long, representative broadcast rather than at idle. The result depends on the exact Pi model, encoding path, resolution, frame rate, filters, enclosure, ambient temperature and power supply. No single temperature can be established for all 24/7 YouTube streams.

Reduce heat without buying a cooler first

Give the Pi room to breathe

Keep the board’s air paths open and avoid an airtight enclosure. Raspberry Pi’s cooling guidance identifies high ambient temperatures, persistent workloads, airtight cases and overclocking as situations where additional cooling may be useful. Vertical mounting can slightly improve heat dissipation, according to Raspberry Pi’s hardware documentation.

Check power and workload

If get_throttled indicates undervoltage, investigate the power supply and connections as well as temperature. A fan alone will not fix an inadequate or unstable power source. Also consider whether the stream’s resolution, frame rate, encoding method or processing effects are adding unnecessary work; test changes one at a time and watch temperature and stream health.

Choose cooling for your exact Raspberry Pi

Raspberry Pi Ltd says, “Thanks to built-in throttling, heatsinks are not necessary to prevent overheating damage to the SoC.” A heatsink or fan can still help reduce throttling and preserve performance during sustained work. No accessory is automatically required, and cooling does not by itself ensure uninterrupted streaming.

Cooling path Fit and trade-off
Open airflow; no new accessory Start here if readings remain stable and there is no throttling. Keep vents unobstructed; this adds no fan noise or compatibility concerns.
Heatsink or small fan Raspberry Pi’s general guidance says a heatsink or small fan can reduce throttling, and airflow over a heatsink makes cooling more efficient. For boards other than Pi 5, check the exact model, case, mounting, power connection and clearance before choosing a part.
Raspberry Pi 5 Active Cooler Official clip-on aluminum heatsink with a temperature-controlled blower, intended for Pi 5. Confirm physical clearance and compatibility with any HAT or cabling. Raspberry Pi Active Cooler.
Raspberry Pi 5 Case Official enclosure with an integrated temperature-controlled fan; consider it if you need both a case and active cooling. Check HAT, cable, mounting and access requirements. Raspberry Pi 5 Case.

For Pi 5, the default fan-control thresholds are 50°C, 60°C, 67.5°C and 75°C for low, medium, high and full fan speed. These are fan-control settings, not recommended target temperatures for every model or stream; the thresholds and speeds can be configured, and the fan uses 5°C hysteresis as temperature falls.

Test the streaming workload, not just the cooling

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, CBR, RTMP or RTMPS, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval. Its ingestion bitrate recommendations are 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended for 720p30, and 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p30. These are YouTube recommendations for ingesting a stream, not guarantees that a Raspberry Pi can encode at those settings or stay cool.

Raspberry Pi’s published H.264 comparison discusses Pi 5 software-encoding profiles and a Pi 4 hardware-encoding path. It is not a benchmark for every camera, overlay, filter or software stack, so test the configuration you actually intend to run rather than assuming a profile will stay cool.

  2. Run a test stream with movement and audio representative of the real programme. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
  3. During the test, check the Pi temperature and throttle flags, then monitor YouTube’s stream health. Note whether poor performance coincides with heat, undervoltage or a separate network or ingest problem.
  4. If sustained temperature or throttling is the issue, improve airflow or install a cooler compatible with the exact board and case. Repeat the same test and compare readings under the same workload.

Troubleshoot heat and stream interruptions

  • Temperature climbs and throttle flags appear: Check for blocked airflow, a restrictive case, high ambient temperature or sustained processing load. Try open airflow first; if throttling persists, choose a cooler compatible with the Pi and case, then retest.
  • Performance drops but heat does not explain it: Check vcgencmd get_throttled for undervoltage flags and investigate power connections. A stream-health or network interruption is a different problem from thermal throttling.
  • A fan runs but throttling continues: Confirm that the fan and cooler fit the board, receive power and have clear airflow; also review workload and ambient conditions. Fan operation alone does not establish that the setup is adequately cooled.
  • The stream is unstable after cooling changes: Recheck YouTube stream health and test with the intended encoder settings. Cooling cannot resolve a wrong stream key, ingest configuration or network interruption.

Or let it run in the cloud

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a Raspberry Pi need a fan to run all day?

Not necessarily. Whether extra cooling is useful depends on the exact board, enclosure, ambient conditions and sustained workload; check temperature and throttle status during the stream.

How can I check whether my Raspberry Pi is thermal throttling?

On Raspberry Pi OS, run vcgencmd get_throttled in a terminal. It reports current and historical throttle and undervoltage flags.
