For a conventional H.264 SDR stream, start with 1080p at 30 fps and 14 Mbps video if your connection can sustain it reliably. If upload capacity or encoder headroom is limited, use 720p30 at 8 Mbps. Those are YouTube’s recommended live-ingest bitrates; neither the recommendation nor FFmpeg settings alone guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast.

Choose resolution and bitrate together

Use YouTube’s live-encoder table for the codec, resolution and frame rate you actually send. These are input bitrates for live ingestion, not a guarantee of the quality or format each viewer receives: YouTube transcodes live input for playback. The figures below are YouTube’s published H.264 minimum and recommended rates, in Mbps. YouTube’s live encoder settings lists separate recommendations for H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1.

Encoded output H.264 minimum H.264 recommended
360p30 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps
480p30 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p60 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
1440p30 7 Mbps 21 Mbps
1440p60 8 Mbps 34 Mbps
2160p30 (4K) 11 Mbps 42 Mbps
2160p60 (4K) 14 Mbps 50 Mbps

A minimum is a floor, not a sensible target for a marginal connection. YouTube advises choosing a quality that will be reliable for your internet connection and testing before going live. The video bitrate is not the entire required upload rate: allow for audio and transport overhead, and leave margin rather than running at the edge of measured capacity.

Practical choices for a continuous documentary feed

  • 1080p30: A useful general-purpose starting point for ordinary motion and detail when your upload can sustain 14 Mbps video plus overhead.
  • 720p30: Use 8 Mbps recommended video when a lower upload demand or more headroom for consistency matters more than fine detail.
  • 1080p60: Consider 17 Mbps when smoother motion matters and both encoder and network can handle it.
  • 1440p or 4K: Select these only when the source benefits from the added detail and the encoder and upload connection can sustain the much higher rates. YouTube says 4K/2160 streams do not offer its low-latency optimization option.

A static image or low-motion documentary feed may need less encoding work at a lower frame rate, but do not treat that as permission to lower the published bitrate: use the applicable resolution-and-frame-rate row unless you have tested a different rate successfully.

Do not carry H.264 figures over to another codec

YouTube publishes different rates for H.265/HEVC and AV1. For example, its live settings list 1080p30 at 4 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended, 1080p60 at 4 Mbps minimum and 12 Mbps recommended, and 2160p60 at 10 Mbps minimum and 35 Mbps recommended for those codecs. Check the correct codec column on YouTube’s current page rather than applying H.264 figures by habit.

FFmpeg settings for a file-based loop

This example sends a local MP4 as H.264 to a YouTube RTMP destination, looping the file and pacing input in real time. It targets 1080p30 at the recommended 14 Mbps video rate. Replace the output size if you choose another resolution, and supply the RTMP URL and stream key securely as environment variables rather than putting a real key in a shared command, shell history, or log.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
  -vf "scale=1920:1080,fps=30,format=yuv420p"
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -r 30 -g 60
  -b:v 14M -maxrate 14M -bufsize 28M
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMP_URL/$STREAM_KEY"

The 60-frame GOP at 30 fps represents a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. The example uses constant-bitrate-style rate controls and a 28 Mbps buffer (twice the target video rate); verify actual output and cadence with your installed FFmpeg build. This is an implementation pattern, not a command published by YouTube. FFmpeg documents real-time file input and FLV output to an RTMP destination in its RTMP protocol documentation.

Match the signal YouTube expects

YouTube’s live guidance includes RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 or AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). For standard SDR, it lists square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth. Audio guidance lists AAC or MP3, 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps for stereo. The example sets common SDR pixel format, AAC audio and the keyframe interval; it does not explicitly set every listed encoder parameter. Check the encoder output and adjust if your FFmpeg build or source differs.

Use RTMPS when available: YouTube describes it as the secure extension to RTMP. For a custom stream key, YouTube provides manual resolution selection; otherwise it can detect settings automatically. Confirm the actual transmitted resolution and frame rate in Live Control Room instead of assuming the input file or filter guarantees the ingest format.

Preflight a 24/7 stream before relying on it

  1. Measure sustained upload capacity. Compare it with your chosen video rate plus audio and transport overhead. A brief speed-test peak is not proof that the connection can hold that rate continuously.
  2. Test representative footage. Send the actual type of movement and audio you plan to loop. Watch YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and messages while the test runs.
  3. Verify ingest settings. Check the resolution and frame rate YouTube detects. If you need manual resolution selection, configure a custom stream key in YouTube’s live settings.
  4. Observe the whole chain. Monitor FFmpeg output and YouTube stream health; separately consider local network, ISP, power, source-file continuity, computer thermals and live-event behavior.
  5. Test recovery deliberately. Simulate a temporary output failure in a controlled test, then verify what FFmpeg and YouTube do. A successful test shows how that setup behaves, not that it cannot fail later.

What looping and recovery can—and cannot—do

-stream_loop -1 repeats file input, but it does not keep a computer powered, prevent a network outage, or guarantee that YouTube preserves one live event. FFmpeg’s FIFO output options can keep processing at real-time rate through temporary failures and attempt recovery; configure and test them for the actual deployment. They are mitigations for output errors, not an availability guarantee. See the FFmpeg all-options documentation.

Likewise, an encoder bitrate recommendation is not a promise of uninterrupted service. The cited encoder guidance does not establish a universal maximum event duration or archive limit, so do not assume a particular FFmpeg command creates a perpetual YouTube event.

Common problems and fixes

  • Stream health reports unstable bitrate or dropped frames: The upload link may not sustain the selected rate. Reduce resolution or frame rate and choose the corresponding recommended row; retest with headroom for audio and overhead.
  • YouTube detects the wrong resolution or frame rate: Confirm the FFmpeg filters and output settings, then inspect Live Control Room. Use a custom stream key if you need manual resolution selection.
  • Keyframes are too far apart: At 30 fps, a two-second interval is 60 frames; at 60 fps it is 120 frames. Set the GOP accordingly and verify actual keyframe cadence rather than relying only on the command line.
  • The file ends and the live output stops: Confirm the input path is readable and that the FFmpeg build accepts -stream_loop -1 for the input. Looping source content does not recover an encoder, PC or connection failure.
  • Output errors persist after a brief network interruption: Review FFmpeg’s error output and test FIFO-based recovery where appropriate. Confirm YouTube’s stream state as well; local recovery cannot guarantee the platform resumes the same event.
  • Audio is missing or out of sync: Check that the source contains an audio stream, review FFmpeg’s mapping and logs, and test AAC at the settings expected by the ingest configuration.
  • The encoder cannot maintain real-time output: A higher resolution, frame rate or slower preset may exceed available CPU/GPU resources. Reduce the output demand or use a faster preset, then recheck stream health.

Or let it run in the cloud
