For a free visual stream sent to YouTube, start with OBS Studio. It handles scenes and encoding, while YouTube supplies the server URL and stream key. But a genuinely unattended radio schedule is a separate job: LibreTime documents scheduled playout, and Mixxx and BUTT can broadcast live audio to radio servers. None of these tools, on the evidence available, guarantees a 24/7 YouTube stream will stay online by itself.
Which free software fits each part of a 24/7 radio stream?
These tools do different jobs, so they are not interchangeable. Choose based on whether you need to create a YouTube video scene, automate a station schedule, perform live DJ sets, or send audio to an internet-radio server.
| Need | Free option | What it does | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Build a visual scene and send an encoder stream to YouTube | OBS Studio | Free, open-source broadcasting software that connects directly to a streaming destination. OBS Help says it has no watermark or usage limitation and is free for any use. OBS Help Portal | The cited documentation does not establish OBS as a radio scheduler or a complete unattended recovery system. |
| Schedule station output and accommodate live shows | LibreTime | Documents scheduled output and integration with live sources. Its live-broadcast guide pairs the workflow with Mixxx. LibreTime documentation | The cited setup material describes radio-stream workflows, not guaranteed direct 24/7 YouTube video output. |
| Mix music live and broadcast to a radio server | Mixxx | Free, open-source, cross-platform DJ software with Icecast and SHOUTcast broadcasting support. AzuraCast streaming software guidance | It is DJ playout, not the YouTube visual encoder in the documented workflow. |
| Send live audio input to an internet-radio server | BUTT | A free, cross-platform broadcaster. AzuraCast recommends Icecast mode. AzuraCast streaming software guidance | It does not itself provide YouTube video composition. |
Practical recommendation: use OBS for the YouTube video-and-encoder role. If the station needs scheduled audio playout or live shows, evaluate a separate radio automation or DJ layer rather than expecting OBS alone to manage the schedule. The cited sources do not establish a single free desktop application that guarantees unattended 24/7 operation.
Set up a free encoder stream to YouTube
- Enable live streaming in YouTube early. YouTube says first-time live-streaming enablement may take up to 24 hours. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or reuse a stream. See YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Copy the stream connection details. YouTube provides a server URL and stream key. Its documented instruction is: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.” Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Configure OBS as the visual encoder. Add the scene elements needed for your radio stream, such as a still image or other visuals and the audio source, then select YouTube as the service if available or enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key. Follow the current OBS and YouTube setup screens for the encoder settings; the cited materials do not establish specific bitrate, resolution, keyframe, or audio values for this setup.
- Start the encoder and check Live Control Room. Confirm YouTube receives the stream and that the audio and visuals are what you intend before treating it as live programming.
- If using scheduled radio playout, plan the audio-to-OBS handoff. LibreTime documents scheduled output and live sources, but the cited setup information does not establish a single routing procedure for every operating system. Confirm how your chosen host routes the radio system’s audio into OBS before relying on it unattended.
Use LibreTime, Mixxx, or BUTT for radio-server workflows
Scheduled programming and live broadcasts
LibreTime’s documentation describes scheduled station output and integration with live sources; its live-broadcast guide pairs live input with Mixxx. This is relevant when you need a station-style schedule, but the cited documentation does not establish that this setup alone creates and maintains a YouTube video stream.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Live DJ broadcasting
Mixxx supports live broadcasting to Icecast or SHOUTcast. For AzuraCast workflows, its documentation recommends Icecast mode and notes that Mixxx can send Ogg Vorbis for Liquidsoap transcoding. This is a radio-server route, not a substitute for configuring a YouTube encoder and visual scene.
Simple live audio input
BUTT is another option for sending live audio input to an internet-radio server; AzuraCast recommends Icecast mode. It does not create the YouTube video composition needed for a visual YouTube stream.

Before choosing among these tools, settle four questions: whether the destination is YouTube or an Icecast/SHOUTcast server, whether programming must run on a schedule, whether live DJ input is required, and how someone will monitor failures and recover.
Plan for the limits of a 24/7 YouTube broadcast
- Do not assume one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast becomes one complete archive. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; it does not establish the same automatic archive behavior for streams longer than that. Plan your recording and archive needs accordingly. YouTube Help
- Expect the host and connection to matter. OBS connects directly to the streaming destination. OBS explains that dropped frames can result from an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Software choice alone does not establish uptime.
- Check music and visual rights before going live. The cited software documentation does not determine what rights you need for particular music, images, or territories. Confirm that your planned material is cleared for your use.
- Review YouTube’s current monetization rules separately. Encoder setup guidance is not a promise that a radio stream qualifies for monetization; eligibility depends on YouTube’s applicable policies and channel status.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
| Symptom | Likely issue | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not show an incoming stream | Live streaming may not yet be enabled, or the encoder connection details may be wrong. | If this is the channel’s first live stream, allow for YouTube’s stated enablement period of up to 24 hours. Recheck the server URL and stream key in Live Control Room and the encoder. |
| OBS reports dropped frames | The network may be unstable, or the connection may not sustain the configured bitrate. | Check connection stability and whether the configured bitrate is sustainable. OBS identifies these as possible causes of dropped frames; the cited sources provide no universal bitrate target. |
| Audio plays on the radio system but is missing from YouTube | The radio output may not be reaching OBS’s selected audio source. | Check the operating-system audio routing and OBS source selection. The cited documentation does not provide a universal routing recipe, so verify this with the instructions for your host and selected radio software. |
| A long stream is missing as a complete archive | YouTube’s documented automatic archive behavior applies to streams under 12 hours. | Do not rely on automatic archiving for a longer broadcast; plan a separate recording or archive workflow. |
| The stream stops when nobody is watching the computer | The setup depends on a running host, a working network, media playback, and recovery from interruptions. | Identify which component stopped, arrange monitoring, and define who will restore the stream. The cited sources do not establish guaranteed unattended recovery for these free desktop tools. |
