In OBS, install VLC, add a VLC Video source, load your media files in order, and enable Loop Playlist. The playlist page on YouTube does not itself create a continuous live broadcast: the encoder must send the video and audio feed, and it must keep running.
If you do not want a computer at home to run continuously, a cloud playout service is an alternative. Before either setup, enable live streaming on your channel; YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
What you need for a 24/7 YouTube radio stream
For the local do-it-yourself setup, you need a YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, OBS Studio, VLC, the media files you have permission to stream, a computer that can stay on, and a stable internet connection. OBS sends the outgoing stream; VLC supplies the playlist source.
Plan ahead for first-time activation. YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours: YouTube’s encoder setup guide. You do not need to configure HLS just to loop a playlist in OBS.

Set up a repeating playlist in OBS
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed, and the installation must match OBS’s architecture. For 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC.
- Create a scene. In OBS, create or select a scene for the radio broadcast.
- Add the playlist source. In the Sources area, choose + and select VLC Video Source. Add the files in the order you want them to play. OBS documents the Loop Playlist control as restarting the source when it runs out of media files: OBS Project: Media Sources.
- Set the playback behavior. Enable Loop Playlist to restart the list when it reaches the end. Leave Shuffle off if you want the same fixed order each time; shuffle is a separate setting.
- Check the output before going live. Confirm the picture in the OBS preview and check that audio registers on the meters. Do a short private or unlisted test before the public broadcast; OBS recommends testing before a first live stream in its Quick Start Guide.
Looping handles only the media source. It does not restart a crashed encoder, restore a failed internet connection, or keep the computer powered on. A 24/7 local stream relies on the computer, OBS, VLC, media files, electricity, and upload connection all remaining available.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio. Select Create > Go Live. Create a new stream or schedule one, then choose its visibility: public, private, or unlisted.
- Copy the connection details. In Live Control Room, find the stream URL and stream key and enter them in OBS’s stream settings. YouTube may retain a previously used stream key in the stream settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it with people who should not broadcast to your channel.
- Start the encoder. Start streaming in OBS. Check the Live Control Room for the incoming preview; depending on the scheduled-stream flow shown in your account, you may also need to select Go Live there.
- Verify playback. Open the watch page on a separate device or browser and confirm that the stream is playing with the expected audio and playlist order.
YouTube’s exact screens can vary with the workflow shown in your account. Follow the prompts in Live Control Room, and do not assume that starting OBS alone completes a scheduled broadcast if YouTube is still waiting for you to go live.

Keep the broadcast running and plan for failures
For local hosting, continuous delivery depends on the machine and connection, not just the playlist setting. Consider how you will notice and recover from a power outage, internet drop, OBS or VLC failure, or missing media file. A correctly sized uninterruptible power supply (UPS) can help keep the streaming computer powered through a short interruption; it does not keep your internet service or YouTube online.
A cloud playout service moves playlist playback and stream delivery off your home computer, but adds a vendor dependency. Check playlist ordering and restart behavior, supported media, stream-key security, recovery and monitoring, geographic delivery and latency, pricing, support, rights handling, and recording or archive options before choosing a provider. YouTube lists Upstream.so in its verified encoder documentation with 24/7 positioning; that listing is not a guarantee of commercial terms, feature availability, or reliability.

Will YouTube save a 24-hour live stream?
Do not rely on one broadcast lasting more than 12 hours to produce a complete automatic replay. YouTube’s encoder setup documentation says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived”: YouTube Help. That is not a promise of an archive for a 24-hour stream. If an automatic replay matters, plan shorter broadcast sessions and check YouTube’s current settings and documentation. Viewer rewind or DVR availability is not the same as a retained or downloadable archive.
Use media you have the right to stream
Use recordings you own or have explicit permission to broadcast and archive in the territories where your stream is available. Giving credit does not, by itself, establish permission. The technical setup cannot determine whether a particular song, film, documentary, or other recording may be rebroadcast.

Do you need HLS for a looping playlist?
No—not for the OBS and VLC workflow above. HLS is a specialized YouTube ingest protocol for encoders that support it, not a playlist-looping setting. YouTube’s HLS instructions specify HTTPS URLs, transport-stream segments of 1–4 seconds, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments; YouTube also notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. Follow YouTube’s HLS ingest guidance only if your selected encoder or workflow specifically requires HLS.
