To make an OBS stream retry after a disconnect, open Settings → Output, enable Automatically Reconnect, then review Retry Delay and Maximum Retries. In YouTube Studio, check the stream’s Auto-stop setting: if you want to allow a temporary encoder interruption to recover, do not configure YouTube to stop the broadcast when sending stops. These settings can help, but neither guarantees that every interruption will resume the same broadcast. Test your setup before relying on it for an unattended event.
What automatic reconnect can—and cannot—do
OBS can retry its connection to YouTube after an interruption. That retry only helps if the OBS process, computer, network path, and YouTube ingest connection become usable again. It cannot fix a persistently unstable connection or a computer that has shut down.
YouTube’s Auto-stop setting controls whether the broadcast stops when the encoder stops sending. Leaving the broadcast eligible to continue can give a reconnect a chance, but it is not a promise that YouTube will preserve or resume the same broadcast. YouTube’s help documentation does not specify a universal reconnect grace period, so there is no verified number of seconds to rely on.
Set up OBS and YouTube for a reconnect attempt
- Get the correct stream credentials. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the encoder stream. Copy its stream URL and stream key into OBS. YouTube describes the stream key as the credential/address the encoder uses to send the feed. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain the workflow.
- Enable OBS reconnect. In OBS, open Settings → Output and turn on Automatically Reconnect. Review Retry Delay and Maximum Retries. Choose values suited to the interruption you expect; there is no single verified setting that guarantees recovery. Labels or placement can differ by OBS version, so confirm them in the installed version. OBS Project source strings include these settings and reconnect-attempt status messages.
- Review YouTube Auto-stop. In YouTube Studio’s stream settings, check Auto-stop. If you want to give OBS a chance to reconnect after sending stops, avoid a configuration that ends the broadcast on that interruption. YouTube says, “When these settings are on, you can start or stop streaming from your encoder.” This describes Auto-start and Auto-stop behavior, not a reconnect guarantee. See Manage live stream settings.
- Run a controlled test. Use a private or unlisted test stream. Check the preview and stream health before the test, interrupt the sender or network briefly, then confirm both OBS’s reconnect status and YouTube’s Live Control Room and player state. A reconnect indicator in OBS alone does not prove YouTube is receiving the feed or that the same broadcast remains live. YouTube recommends testing encoder settings and checking the preview before going live. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- Keep a local recording for important events. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, recommends a local archive backup, and warns that streams over 12 hours may not be captured. Do not treat the platform archive as your only verified copy. See YouTube’s live stream archive guidance.
For stronger resilience, test a backup encoder
A backup encoder is a separate failover route, not another OBS retry setting. It takes more setup, but may help if the primary encoder or its connection fails. YouTube specifically recommends checking that the player rolls over to the backup by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable. Its guidance says, “For test encoder failover, stop the primary encoder or unplug its Ethernet cable.” See YouTube live streaming tips.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Test the handoff before the real event, and verify that the YouTube player actually rolls over.
- Check that the backup source and stream settings match what the event needs.
- Keep local recordings independent of the failover test so a handoff does not become your only copy.
Troubleshoot a reconnect that does not restore the stream
- OBS keeps disconnecting or drops frames: Treat this as a network-path or bitrate-stability problem, not just a retry-setting problem. OBS’s troubleshooting guidance associates intermittent disconnections and dropped frames with connection stability. Check the connection to the ingest server and whether the bitrate is sustainable; retry controls cannot repair a persistently unstable path. See OBS’s dropped-frames and disconnect troubleshooting.
- The encoder reports an error or cannot start: Verify the stream key in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and update the encoder if needed. YouTube lists those checks in its live streaming troubleshooting guidance.
- OBS says it reconnected, but the broadcast is not live: Check the YouTube Live Control Room and player, not just OBS. If YouTube has ended the broadcast, do not assume the same event can be recovered; test the exact interruption and settings in advance.
- The broadcast ends during a short interruption: Review Auto-stop and confirm what happened in the test. Disabling Auto-stop may allow a reconnect attempt, but YouTube does not document a universal grace period or promise that the same broadcast will resume.
- The stream drops for longer than expected: Check the maximum retry behavior and whether OBS and the network are still running. A capped retry count or a continuing network outage can prevent recovery; adjust only after testing the actual failure conditions.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube channel built from uploaded videos rather than a live camera or a one-off event, StreamNeo is a different approach: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It supports whatever quality you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube only and does not go live from a camera. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
