The History of Concrete: What John Wilson’s Documentary Is Really About

The History of Concrete is John Wilson’s comic, personal documentary about concrete—and the challenge of turning an ordinary subject into a film. It is not a comprehensive technical history: a January 2026 review says the film offers only a limited number of facts about concrete. Magnolia Pictures distributes the film and describes Wilson’s attempt to give the subject a Hallmark-style story as a way into questions of artistic freedom and the film industry.

What is The History of Concrete about?

After the finale of his HBO series How To with John Wilson, Wilson turns to concrete, a material he sees everywhere in New York. Magnolia Pictures’ synopsis says he sets out to make a definitive documentary about it, then attends a workshop on writing and selling a Hallmark movie and tries to apply that formula to his apparently unglamorous topic. The result is a film about both concrete and the attempt to make a film about concrete.

Magnolia frames the project’s troubles as foundation problems, literal and figurative, and a struggle between artistic freedom and the realities of the film industry. Its synopsis describes the film’s premise and intended shape, not a promise that the documentary is a systematic survey of concrete’s history. Read Magnolia Pictures’ official synopsis.

Is it a real history of concrete?

Not in the sense of a thorough technical or chronological account. In a review published January 23, 2026, Nick Schager of The Daily Beast writes that the film is about concrete but “not, for the most part, about its history.” He says it touches on concrete’s ingredients, widespread use, and an old American concrete street, but imparts few concrete facts overall. That is the reviewer’s assessment of the film, not an independent technical verification of the claims it mentions. Read the review.

So the title is best understood as a comic point of departure rather than a guarantee of a complete material history. Readers looking for a factual chronology may prefer a dedicated history resource, such as Concrete Through the Ages, published by the Irish Concrete Federation. It is further reading, not an official companion to Wilson’s film; check the specific edition and current availability before buying. See the Irish Concrete Federation’s resource.

What concrete facts does the film mention?

Schager’s review reports that the film mentions concrete’s ingredients as cement, water, sand, and stone; describes it as the world’s second-most-used material after water; and says the oldest American street made from concrete dates to 1891 and is in Ohio. These are claims reported by the review, not independently verified here against technical or historical sources. They should not be taken as a substitute for a documented account of concrete’s composition, use, or history.

Why does Wilson make concrete personal?

The film is also a personal essay about what happens after a creative project ends and how people try to find a footing again. Schager connects Wilson’s interest to a flood in his apartment building’s basement and reads the documentary through themes of impermanence, preservation, regeneration, and mortality. His review describes detours through New York, Rome, film sets, sidewalks, basements, music venues, and a concrete-industry convention.

The Associated Press likewise describes the film as growing from Wilson’s curiosity about concrete’s ubiquity, environmental effects, and durability, alongside his effort to find direction after How To with John Wilson. AP characterizes it as a meditation on permanence, civic life, and creativity. These are accounts and interpretations of the film’s personal dimension, rather than a technical assessment of concrete’s environmental or engineering properties. Read the Associated Press profile.

Where and when did it open?

The Associated Press reported that the film opened at Manhattan’s IFC Center and grossed $90,000 there over its opening weekend in September 2026. That figure is an opening-weekend report for that venue, not a cumulative box-office total. Magnolia’s page identifies the film as in theaters, but screenings change by place and date; check a current local listing for availability.
