You can stream recorded university lectures continuously on YouTube by sending a prerecorded video feed from an encoder to a YouTube Live event. For a do-it-yourself setup, use an encoder on a computer that stays powered on and connected; for a cloud option, upload the videos, add your YouTube stream key, and let StreamNeo loop them. Before you start, confirm the university has cleared the rights, and plan a separate archive: YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.
What a 24/7 lecture stream requires
YouTube Live receives a video feed from an encoder, which can be software or standalone hardware. To loop recorded lectures, the encoder or streaming service must play the recordings and send that feed to YouTube. A local encoder depends on the computer, power, and internet connection staying available. A cloud encoder runs the feed remotely, so your home computer need not remain on.
Continuous delivery and a dependable replay archive are different goals. YouTube says it can automatically archive a live stream that is less than 12 hours, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If viewers need recordings after the broadcast, keep local copies and plan an archive workflow separately rather than relying on a 24/7 stream replay.
Clear rights before broadcasting
Confirm that the channel or university has permission to rebroadcast each lecture and all material in it: slides, embedded clips, music, images, and participant contributions or likenesses where relevant. YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to represent that it has the necessary rights and to comply with applicable laws.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it identifies material, it may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. A rights holder may need to add a licensed channel to its Content ID allowlist; having a license alone may not prevent an interruption. Arrange clearance and any required allowlisting with the rights holder before going live, then monitor the stream for notices.
Educational use does not automatically make a rebroadcast lawful. YouTube notes that fair-use analysis in the United States depends on the facts and that courts ultimately decide fair-use cases; copyright exceptions also vary by region. Ask the institution’s rights office or qualified counsel about the applicable jurisdiction rather than assuming that a lecture is cleared because it is educational.

Set up a do-it-yourself YouTube Live stream
- Check channel eligibility. Verify the channel and confirm it has had no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it and resolve any eligibility issue before the planned broadcast.
- Choose an encoder. Select software or standalone hardware that can play your prerecorded lectures in sequence or loop them and send a live feed to YouTube. YouTube lists verified encoder products, but a listed product is made by its vendor, not YouTube. Confirm that your chosen encoder supports the playlist and looping behavior you need.
- Create the live event in YouTube Studio. Create or schedule a live stream, then copy its stream URL and stream key into the matching encoder settings. Treat the stream key like a password: give it only to people and services that need it, and replace it if it is exposed.
- Configure and test the feed. Set the video format and bitrate supported by your encoder, connection, and YouTube’s current guidance. There is no single bitrate that suits every resolution and frame rate. Leave 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the feed’s bitrate, as YouTube recommends, and test video, audio, lecture order, and playback on the devices your viewers use. Confirm captions or other accessibility features you plan to provide.
- Start the encoder, check the preview, then start the broadcast. Sending the encoder feed and making the event public are distinct actions in YouTube’s encoder workflow. Check the YouTube preview and stream status before using the applicable YouTube Studio controls to go live. Continuously monitor audio and video quality during the event.
- Keep an independent recording. Retain source lecture files and, if you need a broadcast copy, make a local recording or other independent backup. An external SSD is one optional storage choice, not a YouTube requirement. Test that the backup is being saved and can be played before depending on it.
- Test failure and recovery. Before relying on the setup, test the playlist end-to-end and simulate an interruption if practical. Check what happens after a network drop or power loss, how you restart the encoder, and whether the YouTube event resumes or requires a new action. Do not assume a locally hosted encoder will recover unattended.
Plan the lecture archive separately
YouTube’s archive guidance says a stream under 12 hours can be automatically archived; beyond 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. That is a warning, not a guarantee that every shorter stream will produce a complete replay. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as backup.
If a replay matters, choose between one continuous event and shorter planned broadcasts based on the archive risk, viewer continuity, backup workload, and how easily people need to find a particular lecture. Shorter events make individual sessions easier to locate, but require more scheduling and transitions. In either case, keep the original lecture files and verify the resulting archive rather than treating YouTube’s automatic capture as the sole copy.

Costs and operational trade-offs
A local encoder may avoid a streaming-service subscription, but the computer, power, and internet connection must remain available for the stream. A cloud service shifts the continuous operation off your equipment; compare the service’s cost and terms, playlist support, recovery behavior, stream-key handling, and backup options before committing. YouTube’s official guidance identifies encoder categories but does not endorse a particular service or establish that every service permits every lecture use.
For a local recording backup, budget for storage only if the institution needs to retain broadcast files beyond its existing archive. Keep access to recordings restricted as required by university policy, especially when lectures include student contributions or other personal information.

- The channel cannot go live: Check verification and whether the channel had a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. If live streaming has only just been enabled, allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: Check that the stream URL and key belong to the intended event, that they are entered in the correct encoder fields, and that the encoder is actually sending. If the key may have been exposed, replace it and update the encoder.
- The stream looks unstable or has poor audio/video: Check the encoder’s output settings and available upload capacity. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and ongoing quality monitoring; reduce the feed demand or improve the connection if the available capacity is insufficient.
- The event is not public after the encoder starts: Starting the encoder sends the feed, but does not necessarily start the public broadcast. Check the YouTube preview and event controls and complete the go-live action for that event.
- A lecture is interrupted or replaced: Check YouTube notices and review the recording for third-party material. Resolve permissions with the rights holder, including any Content ID allowlist requirement; a license by itself may not prevent a live interruption.
- No complete replay appears: A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Use a local recording or other independent archive and plan shorter events if individual replays are important.
- The stream stops after a power or internet failure: Identify whether the encoder, computer, power, or connection failed, restore it, and verify the feed and event status in YouTube Studio. A local setup should not be treated as unattended until recovery has been tested.
Monetization is not guaranteed
YouTube’s July 15, 2025 monetization policy update renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content” and says repetitive or mass-produced content is ineligible for monetization under the existing policy. A continuous lecture loop may warrant review under that policy, but the policy statement does not decide every university lecture scenario. Do not assume that educational subject matter or livestream format makes a channel eligible to earn revenue.
