Kodi 19.5 “Matrix,” released on 24 December 2022, was the last Kodi 19 build. Kodi made it available from its own servers, but explicitly said it would not submit 19.5 to Google Play or the Microsoft Store. The decision followed Android API-target work and the approaching Kodi 20 “Nexus” release—not a permanent rule that Matrix could never appear in a Microsoft store.
What “the final build” means
Kodi 19.5 capped the Matrix development cycle. In its 24 December 2022 release announcement, Kodi described 19.5 as the final point release in version 19 and said it could be downloaded from Kodi’s servers and installed manually.
Matrix is now an archived release series rather than current Kodi software. Kodi’s official release index lists Kodi 21.3 “Omega,” dated 13 December 2025, among the later releases: Kodi’s release index.
Why Kodi 19.5 was absent from the stores
Google Play and Android’s API requirement
Kodi said Google had updated its submission requirement to target API level 31, corresponding to Android 12. Kodi 19 targeted API level 29, corresponding to Android 10. Kodi said 19.3 would remain on Google Play until Kodi 20 became available, but that 19.5 would instead be distributed from Kodi’s servers for manual installation.

One decision covered both stores
The Android requirement was only part of the explanation. Kodi said the work needed to submit 19.5 to either Google Play or the Microsoft Store was not practical so close to Kodi 20 “Nexus.” Prof Yaffle’s 19.5 announcement stated: “as such, this release will NOT be released on either Google Play or the Microsoft App store.” That is a statement about the 19.5 submission decision, not a current description of Google or Microsoft policy.
The store story changed during the Matrix cycle

That sequence matters. The Xbox build was delayed at 19.0, but Matrix did not permanently remain outside Microsoft’s store: Kodi’s 19.3 announcement records the later Windows Store progress. The no-store statement belongs specifically to 19.5.

What Kodi 19 “Matrix” changed
Python 3 add-ons
The most consequential compatibility change was Kodi’s move from Python 2.7 to Python 3. Third-party add-ons had to be ported, and whether a particular add-on continued working depended on its contributor. An old add-on could therefore fail even when Kodi itself installed normally.
Video, HDR and media-library changes
- AV1 software decoding.
- Platform-dependent HDR support: HLG and static HDR10 on Windows 10; static HDR10 and dynamic Dolby Vision HDR on Android.
- New default movie and television metadata scrapers.
- Music-library metadata and display improvements.
- Revised interface and music views.
- More subtitle appearance controls.
- PVR usability improvements.
These capabilities are not universal hardware guarantees. Kodi’s release announcement notes that some video and HDR behavior depends on the platform and available hardware; an Android device or Windows PC may not support every format listed above. How to obtain Kodi 19.5 safely
Kodi’s official Android mirror preserves historical Matrix APKs, including the arm64-v8a archive at mirrors.kodi.tv/releases/android/arm64-v8a/. Use Kodi’s own archive and select the correct platform and processor architecture; avoid third-party APK sites.
Manual installation is an archive-use case, not a recommendation for a new Kodi installation. New users should normally choose a currently supported release from Kodi’s official download channels. Matrix may be relevant when an older add-on, device image or deployment specifically requires Kodi 19.

Before replacing an existing installation
- Confirm that you actually need Kodi 19.5 rather than a current Kodi release.
- Check the device platform and Android architecture before downloading an APK.
- Back up Kodi’s userdata if you have settings, libraries or add-ons you cannot afford to lose.
- Install only from Kodi’s official server or archive.
- After installation, verify that required Python 3-compatible add-ons are available.
Kodi said 19.5 should generally install over an existing Kodi 19.x installation, while recommending a userdata backup when in doubt and especially before a major-version upgrade. That was Kodi’s guidance for the release; anyone upgrading today should also check the current instructions for the specific device and version.

In its 2021 release announcement, Kodi reported that nearly 50 open-source developers contributed code, with about 5,000 commits across more than 1,500 pull requests since the first Kodi 18.x “Leia” release. Kodi also reported more than 5,500 changed files and about 600,000 lines of code added, changed or removed. These are project-reported figures from Kodi’s announcement, not independently audited measurements.

The practical answer for common questions
Why can’t I find Kodi 19.5 on Google Play?
Because Kodi chose not to submit 19.5 to Google Play. Kodi also cited Google’s API-level 31 requirement while Kodi 19 targeted API 29, and directed users who needed 19.5 to its own servers for manual installation.
Was Matrix ever on the Microsoft Store?
The Xbox Windows Store build was delayed at 19.0. By 19.3, Kodi said it had addressed Xbox-specific release problems and could get the build into the Windows Store. Kodi’s decision not to publish 19.5 there came later.
Is Kodi 19.5 the last Kodi 19 release?
Yes. Kodi described 19.5 as the release that capped the Matrix cycle. It is not the latest Kodi generation; the official release index now lists later Omega releases.
