There is no single free app that replaces all of cable. For most U.S. households, the most useful starting combination is Tubi for on-demand movies and shows plus Pluto TV for live, guide-style channel surfing. Add The Roku Channel, Samsung TV Plus, Xumo Play, or Sling Freestream according to your television and preferred channels. If local ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, or PBS reception matters, plan on an antenna as well.
What “free streaming” actually means
Free television apps generally use one or both of two models:
- FAST (free ad-supported streaming television): internet-delivered linear channels with scheduled programming.
- AVOD (ad-supported video on demand): movies and episodes you select from a library, interrupted by commercials.
Most services in this guide are free because advertising replaces the subscription fee. You still need an internet connection, and catalogs, channels, advertising, device support, and regional availability can change. “Free” does not promise ad-free viewing, downloads, a DVR, local broadcast affiliates, or every current series.
Use the official app store on your TV or streaming device, or the provider’s official website. Avoid unofficial movie sites that rehost copyrighted video, use aggressive pop-ups, or request suspicious software or permissions.

Choose by how you watch
On-demand viewing
On-demand services are best when you already know what you want, want to pause and resume predictably, or prefer browsing genres rather than waiting for a schedule. Tubi is the strongest default for that job. The Roku Channel also combines a substantial on-demand selection with live programming. Search quality and useful titles matter more than a headline catalog number: libraries include older programs, duplicates, short-form material, and titles that rotate out.
Live, cable-like viewing
FAST services recreate the cable-guide habit: pick a channel and watch whatever is scheduled. That works well for background television, classic series, news-style feeds, weather, reality programming, and genre channels. Pluto TV is the clearest starting point; its official service advertises live channels as well as free movies and shows on demand. Xumo Play, Sling Freestream, Samsung TV Plus, and The Roku Channel can add different lineups, although many channels overlap.
Tubi: best for free movies and shows on demand
Tubi is the best first install for a household that wants to select a movie or episode instead of channel surfing. It is oriented around free movies and television, making it closer to a no-cost browsing library than to a traditional guide.
- Choose it for: movie nights, older television, genre browsing, and deliberate title selection.
- Expect: regular advertisements and a catalog that changes as licensing rights change.
- Do not expect: dependable local affiliates, a permanent catalog, or a complete replacement for premium originals and sports packages.
Tubi’s official positioning is U.S.-focused, while availability is regional. Check the app store for your TV model and country before relying on it.

Pluto TV is the natural choice for viewers who miss a channel grid. It offers scheduled live channels alongside an on-demand section, so you can browse a guide or search for a title. Pluto says viewers can watch without payment; an optional free profile synchronizes favorites, watchlists, and progress across devices.

- Device note: Pluto lists support across Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, LG, Samsung, Vizio, Xbox, PlayStation, and other devices, but support can vary by model and region.
Its live news-style feeds are not a guarantee that your local ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, or PBS affiliate is available.
The Roku Channel: a broad hub, especially on Roku
The Roku Channel combines on-demand movies and shows, Roku Originals, and more than 500 live channels according to its current official page. It is particularly convenient on Roku TVs and players, while supported non-Roku devices can also access it.
Watch the labels carefully. The interface places free programming near premium subscriptions, rentals, and purchases. “Available in the app” does not necessarily mean “included at no cost.” Catalogs and features vary by location and platform.
Samsung TV Plus: the low-friction option for Samsung owners
Samsung TV Plus is built into compatible Samsung products and focuses on free, ad-supported live channels. Samsung’s U.S. support information says the service is available on 2016-and-newer Samsung Smart TVs and projectors in supported areas: check Samsung’s current eligibility page for your product and region.
It is a strong “turn on the TV and browse” option, but it is not a universal app for every television brand. Channel selection is controlled by Samsung and can change, so use it as part of a setup rather than your only source.

Other services worth adding for specific households
Plex
Plex is best when free channels sit alongside a personal movie or music collection. Plex says its free live-TV service requires neither tuner hardware nor an antenna. The trade-off is setup: organizing your own files may require a Plex Media Server, and the interface can feel excessive if you only want a simple movie app.
Xumo Play
Xumo Play is a useful second or third FAST service, especially when its channels are already integrated into your television. Compare the actual guide on your device rather than relying on a permanent channel-count claim; overlap with Pluto TV, Roku, or Samsung is normal.
Sling Freestream
Sling Freestream supplies free live channels from a company that also sells Sling’s paid packages. Treat Freestream as a separate free tier and inspect its current lineup. It can be a useful supplement or an upgrade path, but it does not provide the paid Orange or Blue packages at no cost.
Kanopy
Kanopy is the specialist choice for documentaries, independent films, educational programming, and world cinema. Access depends on a participating library or university, and institutions may impose viewing limits or credits. It is potentially higher-value for curated film than for endless live television, but it is not a cable substitute.
Prime Video’s free area (formerly associated with Freevee)
Reports indicate that the standalone Freevee app was retired on September 3, 2025, with free programming moved into Prime Video’s “Watch for Free” area: see the reported transition. Amazon’s current labels and availability should be checked in the Prime Video app before you publish or rely on this option. Free titles may appear beside rentals, purchases, and paid subscriptions.

Build a practical free-TV stack
| Household | Suggested setup | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Movie-focused | Tubi + The Roku Channel | Two on-demand libraries with different catalogs |
| Channel surfers | Pluto TV + Xumo Play | Two live guides can provide different channels and schedules |
| Samsung household | Samsung TV Plus + Tubi | Built-in live channels plus deliberate on-demand selection |
| Roku household | The Roku Channel + Pluto TV + Tubi | One integrated hub, one live-guide specialist, and one on-demand specialist |
| Personal-media household | Plex + Tubi or Pluto TV | Your own collection alongside internet-based viewing |
| Local-TV household | Antenna + one or two streaming apps | Broadcast reception handles local affiliates that apps may not guarantee |
| Library-card household | Kanopy + a FAST service | Curated films and documentaries plus casual live viewing |
Start with two services, then add another only when its guide or catalog contains something you actually watch. Installing six apps rarely creates six times as much useful programming because licensing overlap is substantial.
Recommended Free Tools
What free streaming cannot replace
Local broadcast channels
Free apps may carry national news feeds, weather, or selected local clips, but they should not be treated as a nationwide guarantee of your local ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, or PBS station. For dependable local television, check reception at your address with an indoor or outdoor antenna and investigate your station’s own app or website.
Premium shows and full seasons
Free catalogs rotate and usually do not include every current scripted series or premium network library. A familiar title in an app today may disappear when its license ends.
Major live sports
Free services can offer sports news, commentary, replays, niche channels, or occasional live events. Having a sports channel does not mean having the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, college, or regional-sports rights you previously received through cable.
DVR and time-shifting
Most free FAST channels are scheduled streams, not recordings you can save. On-demand playback offers more control, but it is not the same as a household DVR with local broadcasts and paid channels.

Compatibility, advertising, and account checks
- Confirm the platform: identify the TV brand, operating system, model year, country, and app-store listing. “Works on smart TVs” is too vague.
- Check the account rule: some services begin playback without registration; profiles, watchlists, personalization, or cross-device syncing may require an account.
- Expect interruptions: live channels usually feel most like traditional television. On-demand breaks vary by title, service, channel, device, region, and viewer profile. There is no reliable universal ranking of ad minutes without a controlled test.
- Review accessibility: check captions, audio description, voice control, text size, contrast, remote navigation, and parental controls on the specific service and device.
- Watch for paid labels: The Roku Channel and Prime Video can place free programming beside rentals, purchases, or premium subscriptions.
When an older TV or weak network gets in the way
A television can be “smart” yet no longer support current app versions. An external Roku, Fire TV, Google TV, Apple TV, or other supported device is often a better recovery than replacing a working screen. Choose one that matches the apps and accessibility features you need.
Buffering, poor picture quality, crashes, and audio-video sync problems can come from the network, the TV, the app, or a regional restriction. Use this order:
- Confirm that the TV or streaming device is online.
- Close and reopen the app.
- Restart the TV or streaming device.
- Install available app and system updates.
- Remove and reinstall the app if the problem persists.
- Test the official website or another device to separate a service problem from a hardware problem.
- Check whether the title or channel is restricted in your region.
- Use the service’s official support channel if the failure continues.
Menu names differ among Roku OS, Fire TV, Google TV, Samsung Tizen, LG webOS, Vizio SmartCast, and Apple TV, so follow the labels shown on your own software version.
Bottom line
For most U.S. cable-free households, begin with Tubi for on-demand viewing and Pluto TV for live channel surfing. Add The Roku Channel, Samsung TV Plus, Xumo Play, Sling Freestream, Plex, or Kanopy when your hardware and viewing habits justify them. Use an antenna for dependable local broadcasts, and treat free streaming as a flexible supplement—not a complete substitute for local TV, premium networks, major sports, or DVR service.
