How to Fix Kodi Crashing During Video Playback

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Kodi crashes during playback for different reasons, so there is no universal cache setting or toggle that fixes every case. First determine whether Kodi closes, freezes, shows a blank screen, buffers, or reboots the device. Then isolate the failure with a known-good local video, a clean profile, hardware-decoding and display tests, and finally a debug log.

Identify what “crashing” means

Record exactly what happens and when:

  • Kodi closes and returns to the launcher.
  • The interface freezes and must be force-closed.
  • Video stops while Kodi menus remain usable.
  • The display goes black, audio continues, or the TV briefly blanks.
  • The device itself reboots.
  • The failure occurs when playback starts, seeking, changing subtitles or audio, resuming, stopping, entering fullscreen, or switching display modes.

A short blank screen can be normal while a TV changes refresh rate; a persistent blank screen, application closure, or reboot is not. Buffering usually indicates a network or source problem rather than an application crash.

Safe first checks

  1. Reboot the device and close other applications.
  2. Check Settings → System information for the Kodi version.
  3. Install Kodi only from an official distribution channel. As of August 18, 2026, Kodi’s Windows download page identifies Kodi 21.3 “Omega” as the recommended stable release; Kodi 22 “Piers” builds are pre-release software, not the default choice for stability. See Kodi’s Windows downloads.
  4. Update the affected add-on from Add-ons → My add-ons, and update the skin and dependencies.
  5. Switch to the default Estuary skin.
  6. Free storage space and check for overheating, especially on Android TV boxes and other compact devices.

Step 1: Find out whether every video fails

Use a small, known-good local H.264 file, then compare it with the failing file, another file from the same source, a different source, and—where possible—a lower-resolution version without subtitles or unusual audio.

Result Likely area Next test
Every video crashes Installation, profile, graphics driver, decoder, or device resources Use a clean profile and disable hardware decoding temporarily
Only one file crashes Damaged container, codec profile, HDR/Dolby Vision metadata, subtitle or audio track Try another encode; disable subtitles and change audio track
Only add-on streams crash Add-on, authentication, DRM, network source, or service change Test a local file and another legitimate source
Only one device crashes Device firmware, driver, thermal state, decoder, or HDMI chain Test the same file on another device or display
Failure starts when the TV blanks Refresh-rate, HDR, HDMI, AVR, or switch negotiation Turn off automatic display-mode changes

Kodi’s official troubleshooting guidance recommends comparing files and devices to separate a source fault from a Kodi or hardware fault.

Step 2: Test hardware decoding

Hardware decoding normally reduces CPU load, but an incompatible driver, firmware version, codec profile, or display path can make it the crash trigger. The labels vary by platform and Kodi version.

  1. Open Settings and raise the settings level to Advanced or Expert.
  2. Go to Player → Videos.
  3. Temporarily disable the relevant option: Windows Allow hardware acceleration DXVA2; Linux Allow hardware acceleration – VAAPI or VDPAU; macOS Allow hardware acceleration – VTBDecoder; Android MediaCodec options such as Surface or non-Surface modes.
  4. Restart Kodi and play the identical file.

If the crash stops, the decoder path, driver, firmware, codec, or display combination is implicated. If software decoding drops frames or overheats a low-powered device, re-enable hardware decoding and test another decoder option, driver, Kodi version, or less demanding file. Disabling acceleration is a diagnostic test, not automatically the best permanent setting. See Kodi’s video-player settings documentation.

Step 3: Disable refresh-rate, HDR, and advanced processing

  1. Open Settings → Player → Videos.
  2. Set Adjust display refresh rate to Off.
  3. Temporarily disable automatic HDR switching, high-quality scalers, advanced upscaling, and similar processing.
  4. Restart Kodi and retest.
  5. If stable, re-enable one feature at a time. Try On start or On start/stop rather than Always if you need refresh matching.

Also try another HDMI cable and input, a fixed display refresh rate, HDR disabled at the device or TV, and a direct connection that bypasses an AVR, switch, or capture device. Kodi documents the display-mode choices and their possible blanking during a mode change in its video settings guide.

Step 4: Isolate skins, add-ons, subtitles, and audio

  1. Keep Estuary enabled and disable recently installed video, subtitle, service, repository, and maintenance add-ons.
  2. Play a local file with subtitles off.
  3. Try another audio track and temporarily disable audio passthrough.
  4. Disconnect or bypass an AVR or soundbar and test stereo output.
  5. Restore components one at a time.

A local file that works in a clean profile while an add-on stream crashes points toward that add-on or source, not necessarily Kodi’s core player. Unofficial builds add skins, repositories, and scripts that complicate diagnosis; official support may be unavailable when banned add-ons are installed. See Kodi’s log guidance.

Step 5: Check codec and device limits

H.264, HEVC/H.265, VP9, AV1, 10-bit video, HDR10, and Dolby Vision are different workloads. Support depends on the exact chip, profile, level, resolution, frame rate, HDR metadata, operating system, driver, and Kodi build. Kodi supporting a container or codec name does not guarantee smooth decoding on a particular device. Its supported-hardware guidance explains why graphics acceleration and hardware decoding matter on low-performance systems.

Test a lower-resolution or lower-bitrate version, remove unusual subtitles or audio tracks, and check whether the device is hot, low on storage, or throttling. Re-encoding or remuxing should be a last resort; remuxing cannot make an unsupported codec or profile compatible.

Android-specific recovery

  1. Use the device’s app settings to Force stop Kodi.
  2. Choose Clear cache, reopen Kodi, and retest.
  3. Back up Kodi before any destructive action.
  4. Use Clear data or uninstall/reinstall only after the backup; this can remove settings, databases, add-ons, and local configuration.

Do not indiscriminately delete Android/data; permissions and file-manager behavior differ by Android release and device. Check firmware updates, free storage, power supply, and temperature as well.

Windows, macOS, and Linux recovery

Update graphics drivers and test a fresh Kodi profile before deleting the existing one. On Windows, Portable Mode runs a separate installation with its own data folder, making it a useful profile test. The normal installer’s data folder is C:Users<Your User Name>AppDataRoamingKodi; Microsoft Store data is under C:Users<Your User Name>AppDataLocalPackagesXBMCFoundation.Kodi_4n2hpmxwrvr6pLocalCacheRoamingKodi. See the official Windows installation guide before changing either location.

Create a debug log after reproducing the failure

  1. Open Settings → System → Logging (the exact location can vary) and enable Debug logging.
  2. Restart Kodi if prompted.
  3. Reproduce the crash with the shortest possible test: start the same file, wait for the failure, and reopen Kodi only if necessary.
  4. Retrieve the log and submit it through Kodi’s approved support process.
  5. Include the Kodi version, operating system, device, GPU/VPU, file or stream type, codec, resolution, HDR status, hardware-decoding setting, skin, add-ons, and what changed before the problem began.

Logs run from Kodi startup until shutdown or a crash. Typical locations are:

Reset Kodi without losing your library

  1. Back up the Kodi data folder, databases, playlists, artwork, subtitles, sources, add-ons, and important settings.
  2. Start with a low-impact reset: Estuary, disabled add-ons, and default video settings.
  3. For a medium-impact test, rename the profile/data folder and let Kodi create a fresh one.
  4. If necessary, uninstall Kodi and remove the remaining data folder, then reinstall the official stable build.
  5. Restore only media sources first. Add skins, repositories, and other add-ons gradually.

Application files and user data are separate, especially on Windows, so reinstalling alone may leave a damaged profile in place. Kodi’s data-folder documentation describes profile locations.

When to report a Kodi bug or replace hardware

Report a reproducible bug when the official stable version fails with a clean profile, no third-party add-ons, tested hardware-decoding and display settings, and a complete debug log. Include exact device, operating system, GPU/VPU, codec, profile, resolution, frame rate, HDR format, audio path, and connection details. If only demanding media fails and the device cannot decode that workload reliably, check hardware capability, power, cooling, and firmware before considering replacement. Kodi itself is free and the Kodi Foundation does not sell hardware; avoid paid “Kodi activation” services and unofficial builds.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Treating “clear cache” as a cure for decoder, driver, profile, or add-on faults.
  • Increasing advancedsettings.xml cache values to fix an application crash; those settings address particular network-buffering cases.
  • Disabling hardware acceleration permanently on a device that needs it.
  • Calling every black screen a crash without checking for normal refresh-rate blanking.
  • Deleting Kodi data before making a backup.
  • Testing only an add-on stream instead of a local file.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does one movie crash Kodi while other videos work?

The file may contain a damaged container, unusual codec profile, HDR metadata, subtitle track, or audio format. Compare another encode and test with subtitles and alternate audio disabled.

Can Kodi 22 fix playback crashes?

Kodi 22 “Piers” builds are pre-release software as of August 18, 2026. Use the recommended stable release first; test a development build only when a documented fix specifically requires it.

Will reinstalling Kodi delete my library?

The application and Kodi’s data folder are separate, but deleting the data folder removes databases, sources, add-ons, and settings. Back up the data folder before uninstalling or resetting.

The Bottom Line

Classify the symptom, compare a local test file, disable hardware decoding and automatic display changes one at a time, isolate add-ons with a clean profile, and capture a debug log before resetting. This sequence identifies the cause without sacrificing your Kodi configuration unnecessarily.
