Short answer: The original 9anime service is not an active, official platform in 2026. It rebranded as AniWave in 2023 and was reported shut down on August 28, 2024. Any site now using “9anime,” “9animetv,” or similar branding should be treated as an unaffiliated clone unless independently proven otherwise. Such sites can create copyright, malware, privacy, and payment risks. Safer choices include licensed services such as Crunchyroll, HIDIVE, Hulu, Netflix, Disney+, and free legal platforms including Tubi, Pluto TV, and verified distributor channels on YouTube.
What 9anime was—and what happened to it
9anime was a free anime-streaming site that linked to or embedded unauthorized copies of copyrighted shows. In 2023, the service rebranded as AniWave. Historical coverage and community shutdown notices report that AniWave ceased operating on August 28, 2024 (Wikipedia’s AniWave history; community notice; shutdown discussion).

That history matters because a currently reachable site is not automatically the same service. New domains may copy the old logo, database layout, or name while having no connection to the former operators. The same caution applies to brands such as “9animetv” and to other pirate-streaming sites that change names and domains frequently. Do not rely on a page claiming that the original service “moved” unless there is verifiable information from the former operator—and no such current first-party confirmation is established here.
Is 9anime legal?
The operator and the source material
A service that publicly performs copyrighted anime without permission from the relevant copyright owners or licensees generally infringes copyright. The U.S. Copyright Office explains that unauthorized streaming can implicate the copyright owner’s exclusive public-performance rights (Copyright Office discussion of unauthorized streaming).

What that means for viewers
It is inaccurate to say that every person who watches an unauthorized stream automatically commits a felony or will be sued. Enforcement priorities and legal exposure differ among site operators, uploaders, distributors, stream-rippers, commercial facilitators, and ordinary viewers. Jurisdiction, evidence, and conduct all matter.
Watching an unauthorized stream is not equivalent to subscribing to a licensed service. Downloading, saving, stream-ripping, redistributing, or sharing copyrighted episodes can create additional legal issues. A VPN changes how traffic is routed; it does not grant a license or turn an unauthorized source into a legal one.
Why fair use does not make a full series available
Fair use is a fact-specific legal doctrine, not a blanket permission to watch an entire commercial anime series from an unauthorized source. The Copyright Office advises that copyrighted works should generally be presumed protected unless clear information indicates otherwise (Copyright Office fair-use FAQ). It also discusses legislative treatment of illegal streaming in a separate statement (Copyright Office statement).

Is 9anime safe?
“Safe” covers several different risks:
- Malware and malvertising: malicious ads, redirects, exploit attempts, fake browser updates, and unwanted programs.
- Account security: phishing pages that capture email addresses and passwords, especially dangerous when a password is reused elsewhere.
- Privacy: aggressive tracking, suspicious scripts, and opaque data practices.
- Financial fraud: fake subscriptions, “age verification” card forms, and fraudulent checkout pages.
- Device compromise: prompts to install a player, extension, APK, codec, VPN, or “antivirus” tool.
Malwarebytes identifies 9anime.to as a riskware-associated domain and says it has been abused to distribute scams, phishing, potentially unwanted programs, and malware (Malwarebytes’ 9anime.to warning). That supports treating the domain and lookalikes as unsafe to trust; it does not prove that every page or visitor was infected. Malvertising can deliver fake technical-support, scareware, browser-update, and software-download messages through advertising networks (Malwarebytes on malvertising).

A page that opens without a pop-up is not thereby trustworthy. Phones, tablets, smart TVs, and game consoles are also vulnerable to phishing, deceptive downloads, account theft, and malicious redirects.
How to recognize a fake 9anime clone
- A new variation on “9anime,” “9animetv,” or “aniwave” claims to be the official replacement.
- The site requests an account for content that was previously free, or asks for a card for “free access” or age verification.
- Repeated fake virus alerts appear, or the site insists that you install a player, extension, APK, codec, VPN, or security program.
- The play button opens unrelated tabs, redirects, or notification-permission prompts.
- Copied branding appears without transparent ownership, licensing information, or a legitimate support channel.
- Newly released anime is offered at no cost while official distributors list it as licensed subscription content.
Do not publish or rely on lists of “working 9anime domains.” Such lists quickly become outdated and can direct readers to malicious copies.

What to do if you already visited a suspicious clone
- Close the tab and do not return to the domain.
- Reject notification requests. If you clicked “Allow,” remove the site from your browser’s notification permissions.
- Remove unfamiliar browser extensions and delete files downloaded from the site unless you independently verified them.
- Run a full scan with reputable, up-to-date security software.
- Update the browser and operating system.
- Change any password entered on the site, especially if reused elsewhere, and enable multifactor authentication.
- Monitor email, bank, and payment accounts if you submitted personal or financial information.
- Contact your card issuer immediately if payment details were entered.
- If a fake antivirus, remote-support tool, or other installer ran, disconnect from the internet and obtain professional malware-removal help.
Opening a page alone does not prove infection. Risk rises substantially if you downloaded or executed a file, installed an extension, submitted credentials or payment details, or received a confirmed detection from security software.
Best legal alternatives to 9anime
Licensing is title-specific and territory-specific, so no service guarantees every anime. The table below compares useful starting points; catalog depth, dubs, device support, prices, taxes, and availability can change.

| Crunchyroll | Dedicated anime viewers, current-season simulcasts, subtitles and dubs | U.S. monthly prices displayed: Fan $9.99, Mega Fan $13.99, Ultimate Fan $17.99. A seven-day trial was advertised for eligible new subscribers. | Regional catalog differences; downloads and simultaneous-device allowances depend on plan. Trial renews automatically unless canceled under the terms. |
| HIDIVE | Selected exclusives, seasonal titles, and niche catalog areas | Marketing page displayed $7.99/month and $79.99/year; its help center displayed $6.99/month for U.S. monthly subscribers. | Smaller overall catalog than Crunchyroll and regional restrictions. Verify the checkout amount because official pages showed conflicting monthly prices. |
| Hulu | Households wanting anime plus general television and films | Hulu’s Crunchyroll network page showed selected titles with plans starting at $11.99/month. | Not the full Crunchyroll catalog; U.S.-specific, title-specific availability and changing plan terms. |
| Netflix | Netflix-exclusive anime, originals, films, and existing subscribers | Current U.S. price not established here; check Netflix directly. | Not a complete simulcast or anime-only library. |
| Disney+ | Families and selected major franchises alongside general entertainment | Check current plans at Disney+. | Not an anime specialist and not a broad substitute for seasonal anime. |
| Tubi | Free, ad-supported legal viewing | Free; catalog and availability rotate. | Fewer simulcasts, advertisements, and no guarantee that a particular title is available. |
| Pluto TV | Free channels and selected on-demand anime | Free and ad-supported. | Lineup varies by country and schedule. |
| Official YouTube channels | Free episodes or series uploaded by licensors and distributors | Free when officially published. | Use verified distributor channels, not random uploads; availability is unstable and regional. |
VIZ lists official distribution partners including Crunchyroll, Hulu, Netflix, Pluto TV, Tubi, Vudu, Roku, Peacock, YouTube, and Amazon Prime Video (VIZ streaming partners). Library services such as Kanopy or Hoopla may also carry anime, depending on the reader’s library system.

Which service fits your needs?
- Current seasons and broad anime focus: Start with Crunchyroll.
- A particular niche or exclusive: Check HIDIVE, then confirm the title in your country.
- Anime plus general entertainment: Hulu or Netflix may provide better household value.
- Disney franchises and family viewing: Disney+ is the more natural fit.
- Lowest recurring cost: Try Tubi, Pluto TV, official YouTube channels, or a library service, accepting ads and a smaller or rotating catalog.
- Offline viewing: Compare eligible Crunchyroll and HIDIVE plans and supported devices.
- Several household viewers: Check simultaneous-stream limits before choosing a tier.
- One hard-to-find show: Search the title across official services rather than assuming a missing result means it is unavailable legally.
Why a legal service may not have your anime
Anime rights are negotiated title by title and territory by territory. Crunchyroll explains that regional agreements determine availability and says it does not support using a VPN or proxy to access content unavailable in your region (Crunchyroll regional-availability guidance).
A show absent from one platform may be licensed elsewhere, temporarily unavailable, or offered only through a different type of service. Check the title on official platform search tools, the licensor’s website, or a reputable availability guide. A VPN may violate a service’s terms and does not change copyright ownership or licensing.

Is 9animetv the real 9anime?
Treat it as unaffiliated unless independently verified. Copied branding and a claim that the service “moved” are not proof of ownership.
Can an ad blocker make a pirate site safe?
No. It may reduce some advertisements but cannot establish lawful licensing, trustworthy ownership, or secure infrastructure.
Does a VPN make unauthorized streaming legal?
No. A VPN changes network routing and may conflict with a service’s terms; it does not provide copyright permission.
Where can I watch anime free and legally?
Check Tubi, Pluto TV, verified official YouTube channels, and library services such as Kanopy or Hoopla, while confirming the specific title and region.
