Google Podcasts stopped allowing podcast listening in the United States on April 2, 2024. Google directed listeners to YouTube Music and, during a limited transition period, offered either a subscription transfer or an OPML export for another podcast app. The old Google Podcasts service cannot be restored in 2026, but the podcasts themselves generally remain available through their publishers’ RSS feeds and other directories.
Google Podcasts shutdown timeline
| Date | What happened |

| April 2, 2024 | Podcast listening in Google Podcasts ended for users in the United States. Google’s shutdown notice |
| June 24, 2024 | The shutdown was reported for users outside the United States as part of the later international rollout. This was not the U.S. shutdown date. |
| July 29, 2024 | Google’s transition guidance listed this as the deadline to transfer subscriptions to YouTube Music or export them for another app. Google’s transition notice |
What actually shut down?
The discontinued product was Google Podcasts, the consumer app and website used to discover and play shows. Its closure did not shut down podcast RSS feeds or erase podcasts from the internet.
- Google Podcasts: No longer a normal listening service in the U.S.
- Google Podcasts Manager: A separate creator-facing analytics and management product; its status should not be confused with the listener app.
- Podcast RSS feeds: Still used by publishers to distribute episodes to compatible apps and directories.
- YouTube Music: Google’s preferred destination for podcast listening after the closure.
A show missing from YouTube Music has not necessarily ended. Its publisher may still distribute it through an RSS feed, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Pocket Casts or another directory.
Why Google made the change
Google said it wanted to invest more heavily in YouTube Music as one destination for music and podcasts. In its announcement, Google cited Edison Research data indicating that YouTube was used for podcasts more often in the U.S. than Google Podcasts. That is Google’s stated business rationale, not independent proof that it was the only reason for the decision. The move also consolidated several overlapping audio products under YouTube’s larger platform. Read Google’s announcement

What happened to subscriptions?
Google offered two transition routes while Google Podcasts was still available:
- Transfer subscriptions to YouTube Music. The tool associated shows with the user’s Google account.
- Export an OPML file. The file contained a subscription list that could be imported into a compatible podcast app.
Neither option should be treated as a complete clone of the old account. Google’s materials focused on subscriptions and OPML export, not guaranteed transfer of listening history, playback positions, downloaded files, queues, custom filters, paid subscriptions or app settings. The July 29, 2024 deadline was historical. It should not be presented as a migration tool that remains normally available in 2026.

If you missed the transition, use the show’s current feed or directory listing rather than looking for a way to reopen Google Podcasts.

If YouTube Music shows no subscriptions
Check that you are signed into the same Google account used before the shutdown. Other explanations include an incomplete historical transfer, changed directory metadata, a locally stored subscription that did not map cleanly, or simply attempting the discontinued migration flow. An old OPML file, manual search or RSS addition is the practical recovery route.
Is YouTube Music a direct replacement?
Only partly. YouTube Music combines podcasts with music, YouTube discovery, casting and video episodes, so it can suit listeners already invested in Google services. It is less similar to a lightweight, podcast-only app with a narrowly focused queue and playback interface.

Background play, downloads and Premium
Google’s current help pages do not support a simple “Premium required” answer. Most podcasts can play in the background without Premium, and podcasts can generally be downloaded regardless of membership, although some shows or episodes may not support audio-only downloads. Premium provides broader background-play and offline benefits, especially for music. Podcast ads or creator promotions may still appear for Premium subscribers. Behavior can vary by show, device, account and region. Background playback help · Offline downloads help · Premium benefits

| Service | Best fit | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Music | Google users who want music, podcasts, casting and YouTube discovery together. | Media-heavy interface; RSS-added shows have fewer features; playback and downloads vary by content and membership. |
| Apple Podcasts | iPhone users wanting a mainstream directory and simple subscriptions. | Less suitable for Android-first listeners; paid features depend on publisher participation and Apple’s ecosystem. |
| Spotify | People already using Spotify for music who want podcasts in the same account. | Not podcast-only; discovery, downloads and paid content follow Spotify’s product model. |
| Pocket Casts | Listeners seeking a dedicated, cross-platform podcast app with podcast-specific organization. | Some advanced features may require a paid plan; verify current terms before subscribing. |
| Overcast | Apple-platform users who prioritize a dedicated podcast player. | Primarily associated with Apple devices and not a like-for-like Android option. |
OPML can move a subscription list between apps, but it is not a universal backup of an account. It normally does not restore playback history, listening positions, downloads, queues, custom filters, paid subscriptions or app-specific settings.
What podcast publishers need to know
Google Podcasts closing did not require publishers to abandon RSS distribution. Publishers can continue supplying feeds to Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music and other directories.

YouTube offers two broad routes: upload episodes directly to YouTube or provide an RSS feed. Eligible content can receive podcast labeling, appear in YouTube Music, gain discovery through YouTube and potentially qualify for YouTube monetization opportunities. YouTube’s podcast distribution guidance
Availability on YouTube is not the same as preserving every Google Podcasts audience metric or subscriber relationship. Publishers should maintain their RSS feed and monitor each directory separately.
