Sacha Jenkins, the influential hip-hop journalist, editor, author and documentary filmmaker, died on May 23, 2025, at age 53. The Television Academy records the date of passing; a Rolling Stone report, citing Jenkins’s wife Raquel Cepeda’s statement to The Hollywood Reporter, said he died from complications of multiple system atrophy.

From underground publishing to Ego Trip

Jenkins began publishing while still in high school, creating the graffiti zine Graphic Scenes & X-plicit Language. In 1992 he co-founded the hip-hop newspaper Beat-Down. Two years later, he and Elliott Wilson founded Ego Trip, a short-lived but influential magazine that documented rap culture with an underground sensibility.

His journalism later reached a broader music audience. Jenkins served as music editor at Vibe from 1997 through 2000 and also wrote for Spin and Rolling Stone.

Books and hip-hop history

Jenkins carried the irreverent, archival approach of Ego Trip into books. He co-authored Eminem’s The Way I Am and was associated with Ego Trip’s Book of Rap Lists, a compendium built around the debates, rankings and cultural memory that shape hip-hop fandom.

Why Jenkins’s work mattered

Jenkins moved fluently between scenes that were often treated separately: graffiti and independent publishing, national music magazines, artist-authored books and long-form documentaries. His projects preserved hip-hop history while allowing its artists and communities to define their own significance. The combination made him both a participant in the culture and one of its chroniclers.

Where to look for his work

The Television Academy confirms the documentary credits, but streaming catalogs change by country and over time. Viewers should check current listings in their region for Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men and Louis Armstrong’s Black & Blues. Readers looking for his publishing work can search by the exact titles Ego Trip’s Book of Rap Lists and The Way I Am; availability, formats and prices are not established here.
