First, press the TV’s physical Power button. If the TV responds, it has power and the likely problem is the remote or its setup. If it does not respond, check the outlet and power connection before trying a restart or reset. A dark screen can also mean the TV is on but has no picture, so note whether you hear sound, see a logo, or get any response from the set.
Work out what “won’t turn on” means
Use the TV’s physical Power button rather than the Roku remote. Roku says the controls may be along the top, bottom, or side edges of the television. If the TV turns on this way, troubleshoot the remote; if it does not, start with the power path. Roku’s system-restart instructions describe the physical controls and restart options.
- Physical button works, remote does not: check the remote’s batteries, line of sight, pairing, or TV-control setup.
- Sound but no picture: the TV is responding, but the display may not be working properly.
- Logo appears, then the TV stalls: try a system restart if you can reach the menus; consider a reset only after less disruptive steps.
- No response at all: check the outlet and power connection first.
Do not treat a dark standby LED as proof that the TV is off. LED behavior varies by model, and supported Roku TV systems let you disable it under Settings > System > Power > LED. Roku’s standby LED instructions explain the setting.
If the TV has no response, check its power
Test a wall outlet
- Unplug the TV from its current power source, including any power strip, surge protector, or extension cord.
- Plug it directly into a different known-working wall outlet.
- If it is connected to a GFCI outlet with Test and Reset buttons, press Reset.
- Try the TV’s physical Power button again.
These are Roku’s first recommended checks for a Roku TV that will not power on. Roku’s no-power troubleshooting steps cover the outlet and GFCI checks.

Perform a complete power cycle
- Unplug the TV from the wall.
- Leave it unplugged for at least 10 seconds.
- Reconnect it directly to the wall outlet.
- Press the physical Power button.
Unplugging and reconnecting the power performs a system restart; pressing the remote’s Power button only changes the TV’s operating state. Roku’s restart instructions distinguish the two.
If the TV still shows no LED, logo, sound, or response after these checks, the cause could be the outlet, cord, internal power supply, or main board. Those possibilities cannot be diagnosed safely from the outside. Roku directs users who still cannot power on the set to the TV manufacturer or Roku support, depending on who made the television. If the physical button works, troubleshoot the remote
Identify the remote
A Roku Simple Remote has no voice or microphone button and uses infrared, so it must point toward the TV’s sensor with a clear path. A Voice Remote has a microphone or magnifying-glass button and may communicate wirelessly; TV power or volume commands can still depend on infrared setup or HDMI-CEC. - Remove the batteries and press any two buttons.
- Insert a fresh, matching pair of batteries and replace the cover.
- Point the remote at the TV’s infrared sensor.
Move anything blocking the sensor, such as a cabinet door or soundbar. An infrared remote cannot control the TV through an obstructed line of sight.

Voice Remote
For a battery-powered Voice Remote, remove both batteries, press any two buttons, then reinsert the batteries negative end first and replace the cover.
For a rechargeable remote, hold its Pairing button for 20 seconds if it has one. If it has no Pairing button, hold Back + Home for 20 seconds. Charge it with the supplied cable for at least five hours. To pair it with the TV, hold Pairing for five seconds, or Back + Home for five seconds on a remote without a Pairing button, until the status light flashes. Wait for the pairing message on the TV. These are distinct steps: the longer hold is for the rechargeable remote’s reset procedure; the five-second hold starts pairing. Roku’s remote instructions provide the current procedure.
Why the Roku app may not help
The Roku mobile app can control a Roku TV only when the TV is already on, connected to Wi-Fi, and on the same Wi-Fi network as the phone or tablet. It cannot discover a TV that is offline, just factory-reset, or waiting for initial setup. Roku’s lost-remote guidance explains these requirements.
If the remote turns the TV on but not off or cannot change volume
Voice Remote power and volume controls can use infrared or HDMI-CEC. Some TV models support volume control but not power control through a Roku remote. To configure TV controls again, go to Home > Settings > Remotes & devices > Remotes > [Your remote] > Set up remote for TV control and follow the prompts. On a Roku TV, HDMI-CEC settings are at Home > Settings > System > Control other devices (CEC) > System audio control > 1-touch play. Enable 1-touch play. Other TV brands may use their own names for CEC, including SIMPLINK on LG, Anynet+ on Samsung, and BRAVIA Sync on Sony. Roku’s HDMI settings guidance covers CEC.
If the TV has sound but no picture
- Turn the TV off with the remote’s Power button or the TV’s physical Power button.
- Unplug it from the wall.
- Reconnect it directly to a different wall outlet.
- Turn it on again.
Roku includes sound-without-picture in its TV power and no-picture troubleshooting. If sound continues but the Roku logo and menus never appear, the fault may involve the panel, backlight, display circuitry, or main board. Roku does not provide a consumer repair procedure for those faults; contact Roku or the television manufacturer for next steps. Roku’s no-power and no-picture guidance.
Restart from the Roku menus if you can access them
Use Home > Settings > System > Power > System restart. If Power is not listed under System, skip it and select System restart at the next available menu level. A system restart does not erase settings. Roku’s system-restart instructions give this menu path.

A restart is not a factory reset. A factory reset erases personal preferences, unlinks the TV from the Roku account, removes apps and account information, and returns the set to initial setup. Do not choose it as an ordinary reboot. Roku’s factory-reset guidance explains what is erased.

Factory-reset only after less disruptive fixes fail
Reset from the menus
Use Home > Settings > System > Advanced system settings > Factory reset > Factory reset everything. Afterward, you must complete Guided Setup again. Have your Roku account email and password, Wi-Fi credentials, streaming-service sign-ins, and any Roku account PIN available. Roku’s factory-reset instructions describe the data removed and setup required.
Reset with the TV’s hardware controls
Reset hardware differs across Roku TV models. Follow the instructions for the TV’s specific model or series rather than assuming that every set has the same pinhole button.
- TV with a recessed Reset button: use a straightened paper clip or ball-point pen to hold the button on the rear connector panel for approximately 12 seconds. Wait for the reset cycle to complete and the status indicator to glow dimly, then release it. Turn on the TV and complete Guided Setup.
- Pro Series: Roku’s factory-reset guidance says to hold Power + Find My Remote for 12 seconds; this series has no reset button.
- Plus Series: older models may have a pinhole reset; newer models use Power + Find My Remote.
- Select Series: some models have a reset button; models without one use Power + Find My Remote.
Roku’s separate no-power article gives broader instructions—hold the physical Reset button for approximately 12 seconds, or hold the TV’s Power button for 10 seconds if there is no Reset button. Because those instructions do not match every series-specific procedure, use the TV manufacturer’s documentation when the steps appear inconsistent. Do not keep holding a pinhole button beyond the specified interval: some systems can enter Recovery Mode, which is intended for reinstalling Roku OS when other recovery methods fail. If startup is stuck or the TV cannot reach its menus
If the TV is usable enough to navigate, check for an update at Home > Settings > System > Software update > Check Now. The System update screen displays the software version, build version, and date and time of the latest update. Roku TVs normally check for updates when powered on and periodically while connected. Roku’s software-update instructions give the manual path.

Roku supports USB updating in some circumstances when a TV is usable but cannot access the internet. The process requires a computer, a standard USB 2.0 flash drive of at least 256 MB, the TV’s Hardware ID and serial number, and an update.roku file downloaded from Roku’s update site. This is not a first-line fix for a TV with no power or no visible display; if the TV cannot start far enough to show update or recovery instructions, use the appropriate reset procedure or contact support. Roku’s USB update instructions list the requirements.
Check whether you have a Roku TV or an external Roku player
A Roku TV has Roku software built into the television. A Roku Express, Streaming Stick, or Ultra is a separate player connected to a TV. If the screen says there is no signal or the player shows a low-power warning, the TV may be on while the external player is the problem.
Some external players are powered from the TV’s USB port, which may not supply enough power. A flashing red light or an on-screen low-power or insufficient-power warning indicates inadequate power; Roku recommends using the supplied USB cable and a wall outlet instead. A player powered by the TV’s USB port can also shut down when the TV turns off or enters standby, so it has to boot again when the TV comes back on. A wall outlet keeps the player powered. When to contact support
Stop troubleshooting and contact the TV manufacturer or Roku support if the TV is connected directly to a known-working outlet, its physical Power button produces no response, a full unplug-and-reconnect cycle changes nothing, and the set shows no logo, picture, or sound—or if the appropriate reset procedure does not restore it. Roku directs customers to the manufacturer when another company made the television, and to Roku support for Roku-branded support cases. Roku’s no-power article gives its support direction.
