The best manga app depends on which publishers and series you read: no single service carries every major title. For U.S. readers, Shonen Jump is the strongest value for major Jump series; VIZ Manga broadens the VIZ catalog; and MANGA Plus is the clearest choice for free official chapters released alongside Japan. This comparison covers legal or licensed Android and iOS services, with U.S. prices and availability where confirmed. Prices and catalogs can change, and some services are limited by country.
Quick comparison: manga apps for Android and iOS
Catalog counts below are publisher-reported signals, not independently audited totals. A chapter count is not the same as a count of complete series, and access can vary by title and country.
| App | Best for | Android and iOS | Free access and payment | Offline reading | U.S. availability |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shonen Jump | Major Weekly Shonen Jump series and a large back catalog | Both; VIZ lists its apps for Android and iOS | Free chapters; $3.99/month for the digital vault | Downloads supported | U.S. and other listed countries |
| VIZ Manga | Broader VIZ catalog beyond the core Jump library | Both; VIZ lists its apps for Android and iOS | Free weekly chapters; $1.99/month subscription | Downloads and sync supported | Region restrictions apply |
| MANGA Plus by SHUEISHA | Free official current chapters for eligible titles | iOS listing and official Android app | Free access varies by title; paid MANGA Plus MAX plans are offered, but a current U.S. price is not stated in the cited plan information | Not confirmed here | International service; chapter access varies |
| Crunchyroll Manga | Readers already subscribed to Crunchyroll | Both, plus web reading | Premium plan plus manga add-on, or included with Ultimate Fan; current account price may vary | Chapter downloads supported | Premium members in the U.S. and Canada |
| Manga UP! | Square Enix titles | Android listing verified; current iOS availability should be checked in the App Store | Free tickets/points and paid unlock options; not a simple unlimited subscription | Not confirmed here | Check current store and title availability |
| Mangamo | Selected licensed titles and Mangamo exclusives | Check current iOS and Google Play listings | Plus is listed at $4.99/month, with regional variation possible | Not confirmed here | Check current app listing and catalog |
| Omoi | Cross-publisher and niche catalog discovery | iOS listing verified; current Android availability should be checked | Free chapters and subscription-oriented access; current price not stated here | Not confirmed here | Check title and platform availability |

1. Shonen Jump: best value for major Jump titles
Shonen Jump is the best first stop if your reading list centers on Weekly Shonen Jump and related Shueisha properties. VIZ advertises more than 20,000 chapters in its digital vault and lists the U.S. subscription price as $3.99 per month. Those are publisher-reported figures; they do not mean every series is complete or that every chapter is included in the same way.

- Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.
What it offers

- Downloads for offline reading.
What to know before subscribing
Shonen Jump is a separate app and library from VIZ Manga. The catalog is concentrated in the VIZ/Shueisha ecosystem rather than spanning all manga publishers. VIZ lists access in the U.S., Canada, U.K., Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, the Philippines, Singapore, and India; availability of specific titles can still differ by country. See VIZ’s app page and country and device information. VIZ currently lists iOS 13 or later and Android 6.0 Marshmallow or later as minimum requirements; confirm the latest requirements in the store before installing.

2. VIZ Manga: best for a broader VIZ library
VIZ Manga is a better match than Shonen Jump if you want a wider mix of VIZ-licensed genres and series. VIZ advertises more than 10,000 chapters and lists the U.S. subscription at $1.99 per month. The number is a publisher claim and can change as licensing and the catalog change.
Recommended Free Tools
Why choose it
- The selection extends beyond the core Jump-focused library, making it a natural starting point for classic series, horror, romance, and other VIZ properties.
- Free weekly chapters are available.
- VIZ says readers can stream, download, and sync across devices.
Limits
A VIZ Manga membership is not a Shonen Jump membership: check each app’s catalog for the specific series you want. VIZ access is region-limited, and the included selection varies by title and country. See VIZ’s app page for the catalog and subscription details.

3. MANGA Plus by SHUEISHA: best for free official current chapters
MANGA Plus is the standout choice when your priority is reading eligible new chapters at the same time as their Japanese release. It is an official Shueisha service, and its free model makes it useful even if you also use a subscription app. Simulpub means a chapter is released close to its Japanese publication; it does not mean every series is available simultaneously.
Free access is title-specific
The app listing describes a common pattern of the first three and newest three chapters being free for many titles. Some ongoing English-language series instead offer a one-time free read of chapters. These are not universal rules, so check the series page before planning a full reread. MANGA Plus also offers paid MANGA Plus MAX plans; the current U.S. price is not stated in the available plan information. Chapter display or availability may differ between the app and browser, as explained in the MANGA Plus FAQ.
Use the iOS listing or official MANGA Plus site and plan information; the service also has an official Android app, so confirm the current Google Play listing for your country.
4. Crunchyroll Manga: best for existing Crunchyroll subscribers
Crunchyroll Manga makes the most sense if you already pay for Crunchyroll and want manga in the same entertainment ecosystem. Crunchyroll describes it as a separate manga app, with web reading also supported. Its launch announcement listed ad-free reading, offline chapter downloads, reading lists, and recommendations.
Rank #3
- Our fastest Kindle Paperwhite ever – The next-generation 7“ Paperwhite display has a higher contrast ratio and 25% faster page turns.
- Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
- Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
- Battery life for your longest novel – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 12 weeks.
- Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.
Access and pricing
Crunchyroll’s current support information limits access to Premium members in the U.S. and Canada. Manga is an add-on for Fan or Mega Fan plans, or included with Ultimate Fan. At launch, the add-on was reported at $4.00 per month with Fan and $3.50 with Mega Fan; Ultimate Fan included it at no additional charge. Those are launch price signals, not a guarantee of current account pricing, so check the current plan page or account checkout. The service is currently English-only according to Crunchyroll’s support page.
Catalog and permanence
The launch included partners such as AlphaPolis, COMPASS, Square Enix, VIZ Media, and Yen Press; selected Kodansha USA material was added later. That makes the catalog multi-publisher, not comprehensive. Crunchyroll’s terms describe downloaded content as licensed rather than sold, so downloads should not be treated as permanent ownership.
See the launch announcement, Kodansha catalog update, and current support information.
5. Manga UP!: best for Square Enix manga
Manga UP! is Square Enix’s official global manga platform and is the most targeted pick here for readers seeking Square Enix titles. Its Google Play listing names series including Fullmetal Alchemist, Soul Eater, and My Dress-Up Darling; check current in-app availability in your region before subscribing or spending points.
Rank #4
- Our fastest Kindle Paperwhite ever – The next-generation 7“ Paperwhite display has a higher contrast ratio and 25% faster page turns.
- Upgrade your reading experience – The Signature Edition features an auto-adjusting front light, wireless charging, and 32 GB storage.
- Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
- Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
- Adapts to your surroundings – The auto-adjusting front light lets you read in the brightest sunlight or late into the night.
How the reading model works
Manga UP! combines free reading mechanisms with tickets, points, or paid unlocks, depending on the current product model. A free chapter or ticket does not necessarily provide free access to an entire series: continuing may mean waiting for a ticket, earning points, or buying credits. This can suit occasional reading, but is less predictable than a flat monthly library subscription.
See the official global site and Google Play listing. Confirm current iOS availability and in-app prices directly in the App Store.
6. Mangamo: best subscription alternative for selected licensed titles
Mangamo is a mobile-focused licensed service for readers who want a curated alternative to the biggest publisher-specific libraries. Mangamo says its Plus membership provides unlimited access to 200-plus titles and 50-plus “Only On Mangamo” exclusives. The listed U.S. price signal is $4.99 per month, with regional variation possible.
“Unlimited” applies to titles included with Plus, not everything visible in the service; some chapters may instead use free waiting periods. It is a smaller, more selective catalog than VIZ or MANGA Plus, so check the series page before joining. Current platform availability should be verified in your local app stores.
Best Value
- The lightest and most compact Kindle - Now with a brighter front light at max setting, higher contrast ratio, and faster page turns for an enhanced reading experience.
- Effortless reading in any light - Read comfortably with a 6“ glare-free display, adjustable front light—now 25% brighter at max setting—and dark mode.
- Escape into your books - Tune out messages, emails, and social media with a distraction-free reading experience.
- Read for a while - Get up to 6 weeks of battery life on a single charge.
- Take your library with you – 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Omoi: best for cross-publisher discovery
Omoi is worth considering when your reading interests extend beyond the largest Shueisha and VIZ libraries. Its iOS listing identifies a licensed mix of publisher partners including Kodansha, Kadokawa, Futabasha, Manga UP!/Square Enix, J-Novel Club, ABLAZE, Kaiten Books, and Star Fruit Books. That breadth can help with niche genres and romance, but a partner list is not a promise that every publisher’s catalog or any particular title is included.
The available listing verifies iOS, but current Android support is not established here. Pricing and catalog size are also not stated in the listing cited for this comparison. Check both platform availability and the individual title page before choosing it as your only reader. See Omoi in the App Store.

- Major Weekly Shonen Jump series: Start with Shonen Jump for the back catalog and subscription access; use MANGA Plus for eligible latest chapters released alongside Japan.
- A wider VIZ-licensed mix: Compare VIZ Manga with Shonen Jump and check the exact title in each library.
- Free current chapters: Try MANGA Plus, while checking whether the series allows a one-time read, selected free chapters, or another access pattern.
- Square Enix series: Check Manga UP! first; use its ticket and point rules to estimate the cost of continuing through the series.
- Kodansha titles: Compare the current title listing in K MANGA and Omoi, and check whether selected Kodansha material is available in Crunchyroll Manga. K MANGA is Kodansha’s official platform, but its model uses limited free reading and paid points or chapter access rather than a universally unlimited subscription.
- Already paying for Crunchyroll: Check whether its manga catalog contains the series you want and whether the current add-on is worthwhile for your plan.
- Want a subscription with selected exclusives: Review Mangamo’s included catalog rather than assuming every visible title is part of Plus.
- Want to buy digital volumes rather than subscribe: BookWalker is a digital manga store, a better fit for individual volume purchases than unlimited reading. Local library apps such as Libby or Hoopla may also offer manga at no direct charge, depending on your library’s licenses and collection.
How to compare manga apps without being misled by “free” or “unlimited”
Free chapters are different kinds of access
- Selected chapters: A service may unlock only the opening and newest chapters.
- One-time reading: A chapter may be free once but unavailable for a second read without another access method.
- Tickets or points: A free allowance may unlock a chapter now or after waiting; continuing through a series can require earned or purchased credits.
- Previews: A free sample may show only part of a volume or chapter.
Subscriptions are access, not ownership
A subscription normally grants reading access while the subscription and applicable licenses remain active. Even downloaded chapters can be app-bound or subject to licensing and account rules; do not treat a download as a permanent copy. Individually purchased digital volumes follow a different model, but purchase terms still depend on the store.
Check the exact title and edition
Official platforms can differ in release timing, translation, lettering, censorship, and bonus material. A title being licensed by a publisher or partner does not establish that it is currently available in your country or included in a particular plan. Check the series page in the app you intend to use.
Why these seven apps—and what is outside the list
This comparison focuses on legal or licensed manga services for Android and iOS, with U.S. readers as the primary audience. Publisher-operated options include MANGA Plus by Shueisha and Manga UP! by Square Enix; Shonen Jump and VIZ Manga are VIZ services; Crunchyroll Manga, Mangamo, and Omoi offer licensed catalogs. The ranking prioritizes catalog relevance, value, release timing, confirmed offline features, platform access, and clarity of payment model. Where Android/iOS support or a feature was not established, it is marked for verification rather than assumed.
Webtoon- and manhwa-first apps such as WEBTOON or Tapas serve a related but different reading ecosystem, so they are not ranked as Japanese manga libraries here. Unofficial aggregators may appear to offer wider catalogs, but they raise licensing, privacy, account-security, and malware concerns; stick to publisher-operated services and licensed platforms.
