Roku’s Howdy costs $2.99 a month in the U.S. and promises ad-free viewing of familiar films and television. It is a low-cost library service, not a new-release or original-series powerhouse. The value depends less on Roku’s nearly 10,000-hour catalog claim than on whether that catalog currently has shows and movies you want to watch without commercial breaks.
What Howdy is—and what it isn’t
Howdy is Roku’s paid subscription video-on-demand service. In the U.S., Roku lists it at $2.99 per month, plus applicable tax, and describes its programming as ad-free. Roku launched the service in August 2025. Roku’s Howdy page has current signup and service details.
It is not another name for The Roku Channel. The Roku Channel is Roku’s broader destination for free, ad-supported viewing and premium subscriptions. Howdy is a separate paid offering aimed at viewers who would rather pay a small monthly fee than watch its programming with ad breaks. “Ad-free” describes Howdy’s shows and movies; it should not be taken to mean every Roku device screen or interface is free of promotions.

Roku reported nearly 10,000 hours of programming at launch. That is a measure of volume, not a promise that the titles are exclusive, recent, or uniformly appealing. Howdy’s pitch is recognizable, rewatchable library entertainment rather than a steady stream of new releases or prestige originals.

Launch coverage cited films including Mad Max: Fury Road, American Psycho, Reservoir Dogs, The Iron Giant, Lucy, Saw, and The Blind Side, along with series such as Weeds, Southland, Party Down, and Kids in the Hall. Those are examples reported at launch, not a guarantee that each remains available. Roku later described the service as carrying fan favorites such as The Notebook, Nurse Jackie, and Kids in the Hall. Licensed catalogs change, so check the current lineup before subscribing.
Launch reporting identified content relationships with Warner Bros. Discovery, Lionsgate, and FilmRise. The key point for a prospective subscriber is not the partner list or raw hours: it is whether the current catalog contains enough titles your household actually wants.

Why is it only $2.99?
Roku has not disclosed the licensing economics behind Howdy’s price. Its public explanation points to relationships with content owners and deals that allow it to keep the monthly fee low. A reasonable reading is that a library-focused service can cost less to program than one built around expensive originals, exclusives, and a constant supply of new releases. That is analysis, not a disclosed breakdown of Roku’s costs.

Roku has presented Howdy as an ad-free complement to larger services and an alternative for viewers wary of rising subscription costs or heavier advertising elsewhere. Roku’s filings also place Howdy within its broader streaming business: the company operates the service alongside its ad-supported platform and its distribution of other subscriptions. There is no verified announcement in the supplied material of a planned price increase; treat the listed price as the current U.S. offer, not a guarantee about future pricing.

Where you can watch it
Roku’s current service and support information lists viewing on Roku TVs and streaming players, at Howdy.tv, through Howdy’s iOS and Android apps, and through the Roku mobile app. You do not need to own Roku hardware to subscribe.
That is broader than the original August 2025 launch setup, which centered on Roku devices and a browser. Roku’s Q1 2026 shareholder letter also says Howdy became available as a subscription option on Prime Video and launched on Roku’s platform in Mexico. Availability, pricing, billing, and catalog can vary by market; the $2.99 price in this article is the U.S. price, not a worldwide rate.

Is Howdy worth the monthly fee?
It can be a sensible add-on if you regularly rewatch familiar films or series, dislike commercial breaks, and find several titles in the current catalog that you want to see. The modest price also makes it practical as a short-term subscription: join when there is a watchlist waiting, then reassess before another billing period.
The comparison to make is not simply “$2.99 versus a larger streamer.” Some older catalog titles may be available elsewhere, including through free ad-supported services such as The Roku Channel or FilmRise. Roku’s own listings can show different ways to watch a title, including a free ad-supported option and a Howdy subscription. If you already have access to a wanted title, or do not mind ads, paying may add little value.

A quick value test:
- Look through Howdy’s current catalog for at least three titles you genuinely plan to watch.
- Check whether you already have access to them through another subscription or a free ad-supported service.
- Decide whether uninterrupted viewing of those titles is worth $2.99 for the month.
- If you subscribe for a specific watchlist, review the renewal before the next charge.
Howdy is a poor fit if your priority is current theatrical releases, original programming, sports, or a deep slate of exclusive shows. It is also easy to skip if you watch only occasionally or are satisfied with free viewing that includes ads. Roku positions Howdy as a complement to larger services, not a replacement for them.
How to subscribe and cancel
You can subscribe through a Roku device, Howdy.tv, or the mobile apps. For Roku-billed subscriptions, Roku’s subscription support page explains the process; subscriptions purchased through another platform may need to be managed there instead.
Roku says cancellation is available through the Roku account page at my.roku.com/subscriptions. Access continues through the current billing period, and Roku’s stated terms say partial months are not refunded. Check the terms shown for your billing channel and region before subscribing.
