The best way to watch the six Home Alone movies is in release-date order: Home Alone (1990), Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992), Home Alone 3 (1997), Home Alone 4: Taking Back the House (2002), Home Alone: The Holiday Heist (2012), and Home Sweet Home Alone (2021).
That order is also the most practical chronological order. The franchise does not provide one fully consistent timeline for all six stories. The first two films form the direct Kevin McCallister sequence; the remaining films mostly reset the premise with new children, families, villains, and continuity arrangements.
Home Alone movies in release-date order
Watching the films by release date lets you follow the franchise as audiences originally experienced it and avoids assigning fictional calendar years that the movies never clearly establish.

1. Home Alone (1990)
Chris Columbus’s original introduces eight-year-old Kevin McCallister, who is accidentally left behind in suburban Chicago while his family travels to France for the holidays. Kevin must defend his house against burglars Harry and Marv, using a series of improvised traps.

It is the starting point for both Kevin’s story and the franchise’s basic formula: an isolated child, an empty—or apparently empty—house, determined criminals, and elaborate household defenses.

2. Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992)
The direct sequel brings back Macaulay Culkin as Kevin, as well as Kevin’s family, Harry, and Marv. This time, Kevin is separated from his family during another holiday trip and ends up in New York City.
Home Alone 2 was released on November 20, 1992. It reunites director Chris Columbus and writer-producer John Hughes, making it the clearest continuation of the first film. For viewers primarily interested in Kevin McCallister, this is the essential second movie.
3. Home Alone 3 (1997)
Home Alone 3 is the franchise’s first major reset. The main character is Alex Pruitt, played by Alex D. Linz, rather than Kevin McCallister. Alex discovers that a remote-controlled toy contains a stolen secret computer chip and has to protect his home from an international criminal group.
Raja Gosnell directed the film, while John Hughes returned as writer and producer. It received a U.S. theatrical release on December 19, 1997. Although it retains the child-versus-intruders premise, it should be approached as a standalone story rather than as the next chapter of Kevin’s life.
4. Home Alone 4: Taking Back the House (2002)
This entry returns to the character name Kevin McCallister, but it is not a seamless continuation of the first two films. Kevin is played by Mike Weinberg instead of Macaulay Culkin, and the family situation is substantially different. The story takes Kevin to his father’s new girlfriend Natalie’s mansion, where he confronts Marv and other criminals.
Directed by Rod Daniel, Home Alone 4 was made as a television-style sequel and released in 2002. Because the character is recast and the continuity changes, it is best treated as an alternate Kevin variation or loose reboot—not as a precise third installment in the original Kevin timeline.

5. Home Alone: The Holiday Heist (2012)
The Holiday Heist introduces another family and another set of young defenders. Finn and Alexis Baxter are left at home while criminals target their house. Finn uses technology, surveillance, and booby traps to fight back.
Peter Hewitt directed this 2012 comedy, which stars Christian Martyn, Jodelle Ferland, Malcolm McDowell, Debi Mazar, and Eddie Steeples. There is no need to fit Finn and Alexis into Kevin McCallister’s personal chronology: the film uses the established premise as a new story.
6. Home Sweet Home Alone (2021)
The most recent released film centers on Max Mercer, who is left behind while his family travels to Japan. A couple searching for a valuable heirloom targets the Mercer home, and Max responds with the traps and defensive ingenuity associated with the series.
Directed by Dan Mazer, Home Sweet Home Alone premiered exclusively on Disney+ on November 12, 2021. Its principal connection to the original films is the appearance of Devin Ratray as an adult Buzz McCallister. That connection is a franchise callback, not enough evidence of a fully mapped, uninterrupted timeline.
Is there a true chronological order?
Not in the usual sense. The films provide release years, but they do not establish a complete in-universe calendar that places every story relative to the others. Trying to label each movie with an exact fictional year would create a timeline the franchise itself does not clearly support.

Rank #3
| Continuity group | Films | What connects them |
|---|---|---|
| Original Kevin sequence | Home Alone → Home Alone 2: Lost in New York | Macaulay Culkin’s Kevin, his family, Harry and Marv, and a direct sequel relationship. |
| Alternate Kevin continuity | Home Alone 4: Taking Back the House | The Kevin and Marv character names return, but the actors and family circumstances change. |
| Standalone protagonist stories | Home Alone 3, The Holiday Heist, and Home Sweet Home Alone | The shared child-defends-a-home premise, rather than one continuous protagonist or storyline. |
So, when a guide says “chronological order,” the useful answer is release order with this continuity explanation. There is no separate official chronological sequence that improves on it.
The best viewing plans
For a complete franchise marathon
Watch all six movies in release order:
Home Alone → Home Alone 2 → Home Alone 3 → Home Alone 4 → The Holiday Heist → Home Sweet Home Alone
This plan shows how the central idea changes across decades: from the original Kevin stories, to recast and television-oriented variations, to new families and a Disney+ revival.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor the essential Kevin McCallister story
Watch only Home Alone and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. These are the two films starring Macaulay Culkin as Kevin and the only pair with a close direct narrative relationship.
Add Home Alone 4: Taking Back the House if you want to see a separate, recast version of Kevin. It is optional for viewers who are interested only in the original continuity.
For viewers who want permanent access to this core sequence, a Home Alone 1 & 2 Blu-ray collection is the most directly relevant physical-media option. It contains the first two films—not all six entries—so check the contents before buying.
For the new-character stories
Watch Home Alone 3, The Holiday Heist, and Home Sweet Home Alone after the first two films, in release order. Their protagonists are Alex Pruitt, Finn and Alexis Baxter, and Max Mercer, respectively. Because these films are effectively separate adventures, there is no benefit to trying to place them inside Kevin’s personal timeline.

Where to watch the Home Alone movies
Disney’s franchise guide currently lists all six Home Alone movies on Disney+. A U.S. availability guide from JustWatch has also listed all six on Disney+ at the time of its latest cited update. Streaming catalogs are changeable, however, and availability may differ by country, subscription tier, or date.
Before starting a marathon, search for each title in the Disney+ app or check a current streaming guide for your region. Do not assume that availability in the United States applies elsewhere. Rental and purchase options can also change independently of subscription availability.
If you prefer physical media, the original Home Alone has been documented in DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K UHD editions, while a separate two-film Blu-ray collection covers Home Alone and Home Alone 2. A two-film collection should not be described as a six-film box set.

- Want the classic story? Watch Home Alone.
- Want the direct sequel? Follow it with Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.
- Want only Macaulay Culkin’s Kevin? Stop after the first two films.
- Want every released entry? Watch all six in release order.
- Want a new child and new setting? Try Home Alone 3, The Holiday Heist, or Home Sweet Home Alone.
- Want another version of Kevin? Add Home Alone 4, but treat it as a separate continuity.
What to expect from the later films
The first two movies are the most tightly connected and are generally the natural starting point for the franchise. The later entries are better understood as variations on a recognizable holiday-comedy setup. They change the child protagonist, household, threat, technology, and supporting cast while preserving the basic idea of a young person defending a home from criminals.
That distinction matters because watching order cannot turn the six films into one uninterrupted Kevin story. Release order preserves the franchise’s actual development, while the continuity groupings explain why some character and casting changes may feel abrupt.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to watch the Home Alone movies in chronological order?
No. There is no fully established in-universe timeline for all six films. Release order is the clearest and most useful sequence.
Best Value
- Factory sealed DVD
Are all six Home Alone movies about Kevin McCallister?
No. Macaulay Culkin plays Kevin in the first two films. Home Alone 4 reuses the Kevin name with Mike Weinberg, while Home Alone 3, The Holiday Heist, and Home Sweet Home Alone focus on Alex Pruitt, Finn and Alexis Baxter, and Max Mercer.
Which Home Alone movies are direct sequels?
Home Alone and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York are the direct Kevin McCallister sequence. Home Alone 4 is a recast, substantially altered Kevin variation rather than a seamless continuation.
Where can I stream all six Home Alone movies?
Disney’s current franchise guide lists all six on Disney+, but streaming rights and regional catalogs can change. Verify each title in your local Disney+ catalog before subscribing or beginning a marathon.
Is Home Alone 4 part of the original continuity?
It reuses Kevin McCallister and Marv, but the characters are recast and the family situation changes considerably. Treat it as an alternate or loose continuity rather than a direct continuation of the first two films.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Watch Home Alone, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, Home Alone 3, Home Alone 4: Taking Back the House, Home Alone: The Holiday Heist, and Home Sweet Home Alone in release order. For the original Kevin McCallister story, the first two films are the essential pair; the other four are best treated as standalone or alternate-continuity variations on the same premise.
