Kevin Costner is not in Yellowstone Season 5B because a prolonged scheduling and production dispute ended his participation before the second half was completed. Delayed filming, negotiations, and his commitments to Horizon: An American Saga contributed, but Horizon was not the sole proven reason for his exit.
Costner confirmed the decision publicly on June 20, 2024. The second half of Season 5 premiered on November 10, 2024 without new Costner footage, and the show handled John Dutton’s absence through a major story development: his death before the main Season 5B events.
Key takeaways
- Kevin Costner announced on June 20, 2024 that he would not continue with Yellowstone Season 5B or future episodes.
- The central documented cause was a scheduling and production dispute involving delayed Yellowstone work, negotiations, and Costner’s commitments to Horizon: An American Saga.
- Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2 premiered on November 10, 2024, after a two-year break between Parts 1 and 2.
- Season 5B contains no new Kevin Costner footage; the series explains John Dutton’s absence by killing the character before the main second-half story.
- Horizon was an important scheduling pressure, but the public record does not prove that Costner left solely to make the films.
Why is Kevin Costner not in Yellowstone Season 5B?
Kevin Costner is not in Yellowstone Season 5B because a prolonged scheduling and production dispute ended his participation before the second half was completed. Delayed filming, uncertainty over dates, negotiations, and Costner’s work on Horizon: An American Saga all contributed; Costner confirmed on June 20, 2024 that he would not continue with Season 5B or future episodes.
That answer is more accurate than saying Costner simply “chose Horizon.” Costner described both projects as contractual commitments and said he had tried to accommodate Yellowstone. Taylor Sheridan, meanwhile, emphasized disagreements over when Costner could finish his work and the difficulty created when lawyers became involved. Those are competing accounts of a breakdown, not a complete public record of the private negotiations.

What is the confirmed timeline of Costner’s Yellowstone exit?
| Date or period | What happened | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 | Yellowstone Season 5 Part 1 aired. | The season was divided into two parts. |
| During the gap | Public reporting focused on delayed production, Costner’s availability, Horizon, and negotiations. | The dispute developed over time rather than resulting from one publicly documented incident. |
| June 20, 2024 | Costner announced that he would not continue with Season 5B or future episodes. | His departure became an explicit public decision. |
| November 10, 2024 | Season 5 Part 2 premiered after a two-year break between the two parts, according to Paramount’s release announcement. | The completed second half arrived without new Costner footage. |
| Season 5B | The six episodes were “Desire Is All You Need,” “The Apocalypse of Change,” “Three-Fifty-Three,” “Counting Coup,” “Give the World Away,” and “Life Is a Promise.” | The season’s remaining story proceeded without John Dutton appearing in new scenes. |
Costner’s public announcement, reported by CBS News on June 21, 2024, included the statement: “I just realized that I’m not going to be able to continue Season 5b or into the future.” That is the clearest confirmation of the final decision.
Was Costner’s departure caused only by Horizon: An American Saga?
No. Horizon: An American Saga was a major scheduling pressure, but the available reporting does not support treating the film series as the sole proven reason Costner left Yellowstone.
Costner directed and starred in Horizon and invested substantial time and resources in the western project. In interviews with GQ and The Associated Press, he said Yellowstone had been his first priority and that he had tried to make room for both productions. His position was that the problem was fitting two demanding schedules together, not abandoning the television series in a simple one-for-one choice.
GQ also reported that delays—including COVID-19, the writers’ strike, and other production disagreements—caused Costner to hold dates in his calendar that later shifted. When a production repeatedly moves its shooting window, an actor working on another large project can face a practical contract and availability crisis even if both projects remain important.

What did Taylor Sheridan say about the dispute?
Taylor Sheridan’s public explanation also centered on scheduling, but he assigned responsibility differently. In the account of his Hollywood Reporter interview reproduced by AOL, Sheridan said Costner and the network disagreed about when Costner could complete his remaining Yellowstone work. Sheridan said the production tried to work toward Costner’s preferred exit date: “We can certainly work a schedule toward [his preferred exit date],” which we did.
Sheridan also said that lawyers’ involvement made direct communication more difficult. Costner disputed parts of the broader public narrative about his exit. The responsible conclusion is not that one side’s entire private account has been proven; it is that both public versions identify scheduling as central, while differing over how the impasse developed and who was responsible for it.
| Explanation | Evidence status | Careful interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Delayed Yellowstone production | Documented in public reporting | Moving production dates made Costner’s availability harder to protect. |
| Horizon commitments | Documented scheduling pressure | The film series competed for time but is not established as the only cause. |
| Contract and schedule negotiations | Publicly reported, with private details unavailable | The parties failed to agree on a workable timetable and terms. |
| Communication breakdown | Emphasized in Sheridan’s account | Lawyers’ involvement reportedly made direct resolution more difficult. |
| Private personal arguments or exact contract demands | Not established by the sources reviewed | These claims should not be presented as fact. |
How does Yellowstone explain John Dutton’s absence?
Spoiler: John Dutton is killed before the main Season 5B storyline. The premiere presents his death as a staged suicide carried out by a hitman, giving the show a way to continue the Dutton story without Costner appearing in the remaining episodes.
This is the show’s on-screen explanation, separate from the behind-the-scenes reason for Costner’s absence. The production did not recast John Dutton or keep him indefinitely off-screen. Instead, the character’s death becomes the immediate consequence of Costner’s departure. Paramount’s official Yellowstone material later included behind-the-scenes discussion of the details of John’s death and the conclusion of the Dutton story.

Was Kevin Costner ever open to returning as John Dutton?
For a time, yes—but his openness was conditional, not a confirmation that a return had been arranged. In a June 2024 interview, Costner said he could imagine returning if the story was moving in the right direction, as reported by CBS News.
That possibility should be separated from his final public announcement. On June 20, 2024, Costner said he would not continue with Season 5B or “into the future.” Season 5B’s completed episodes therefore do not represent a temporary absence awaiting his return; they represent the series moving forward without a new Costner performance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does Costner’s exit say about the show’s production problem?
The public record points to an accumulation of production pressures rather than one isolated creative disagreement. Yellowstone had a long break between the two halves of Season 5, while Costner had to preserve time for Horizon. Delays connected to COVID-19 and the writers’ strike further complicated dates, and negotiations failed to produce a schedule acceptable to everyone involved.
The show was also commercially important: according to The Associated Press in 2023, 21.6 million people watched when CBS aired the first season during the Hollywood strikes. That figure provides context for the franchise’s importance, but it does not prove why Costner left.

The most defensible summary is therefore: scheduling was the central documented trigger; delayed production, contract negotiations, competing commitments, and a communication breakdown intensified the dispute; and the unresolved conflict ended Costner’s participation before Season 5B was filmed.
