Disney+ GroupWatch is not temporarily broken. Disney discontinued the feature on September 18, 2023, removing it from the Disney+ website and apps. That means a missing GroupWatch button, expired invitation link, or failed attempt to start a new session is normally the expected result of a retired feature—not a problem with your device, internet connection, or subscription tier.
You can still watch Disney+ with friends remotely, but you need a separate service such as Teleparty or a manual start-time workaround. The steps below also explain which troubleshooting is worthwhile if Disney+ itself—not just GroupWatch—is failing.
Why Disney+ GroupWatch is not working
Disney+ removed native GroupWatch on September 18, 2023. Contemporary Disney+ customer-support language reported that the feature would no longer be available from that date and had been removed as part of product updates.
As a result, these symptoms are expected:
- The GroupWatch icon is missing from a movie or episode page.
- An old GroupWatch invitation link no longer opens a session.
- A friend cannot join a previously created invitation.
- GroupWatch appears in an old tutorial, screenshot, or search result but not in the current Disney+ app.
- Normal Disney+ streaming works, but there is no option to start synchronized playback.
Reinstalling Disney+, clearing its cache, updating the app, changing devices, or upgrading your plan will not restore a feature that Disney has removed. There is also no confirmed relaunch date established by the available information.

What GroupWatch used to do
GroupWatch was Disney+’s built-in watch-party feature. It synchronized playback for people watching the same movie or episode remotely and allowed participants to send emoji reactions during the viewing session. Historical reports described groups of up to seven participants, with each person generally needing Disney+ access. Availability and restrictions varied by market and plan while the feature existed.
Those requirements are now historical. In particular, do not upgrade to an ad-free plan solely to recover GroupWatch. Subscription-plan differences that mattered when the feature was available do not override its later discontinuation.
First, separate GroupWatch from a broader Disney+ problem
The most useful diagnostic is simple: open a normal Disney+ movie or episode.

Disney+ troubleshooting that is still worthwhile
General troubleshooting can fix ordinary Disney+ problems, but it cannot bring back GroupWatch. Use these steps only when normal streaming, login, downloads, or account access is also failing.
1. Test another ordinary title
Try a different movie or episode. If one title fails while others play, the problem may be title-specific, temporary, or related to availability in your region. If everything fails, continue with the connection and app checks below.

2. Confirm that your device and browser are supported
Disney+ supports categories including current web browsers, iPhone and iPad devices, Android phones and tablets, Windows computers and tablets, streaming sticks, game consoles, smart TVs, and set-top boxes. Exact support can vary by country or territory, so check Disney+’s current device list for your location.
A supported device for Disney+ can help you watch normally or run a separate watch-party setup, but no laptop, streaming stick, television, or console restores the discontinued native feature.
3. Restart and update the app for ordinary playback failures
- Force-close the Disney+ app.
- Restart the phone, computer, television, streaming player, or console.
- Install any available Disney+ app or browser updates.
- Check whether other websites or streaming services work.
- Restart your router if the connection is unstable.
These are reasonable fixes for buffering, crashes, downloads, and playback errors. They will not make a missing GroupWatch button reappear.
4. Check VPN and location behavior
Disney+ catalogs and access rules can differ by country or region. If Disney+ displays a location-related error, especially Error 73, disable any VPN, proxy, or IP-anonymizing service and try again. Then restart the app or browser and check your connection.
This is separate from GroupWatch removal: resolving a VPN or location error may restore ordinary Disney+ access, but it does not restore GroupWatch.

5. Check household and account restrictions
Disney+ may challenge a TV-connected device that it does not recognize as part of the account household. Follow the on-screen account or household verification instructions if that occurs. Household-sharing checks affect account access; they are not a hidden way to reactivate GroupWatch.
6. Contact Disney+ support for the right kind of problem
Contact Disney+ if you have an unresolved login, billing, subscription, household, location, or playback problem. Disney’s support pages provide a virtual assistant and agent-support options, and the U.S. support page lists a phone contact. Support methods and phone numbers can vary by region, so use the contact details displayed for your own country.

Do not contact support expecting an agent to re-enable GroupWatch. The available evidence indicates that the feature was retired across the service rather than disabled on an individual account.
The current alternative: Teleparty
Teleparty for Disney+ is the clearest current third-party alternative identified for synchronized remote viewing. Teleparty says it synchronizes playback and adds group chat for supported services including Disney+, Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, Amazon Prime, YouTube, ESPN+, and Crunchyroll.
Teleparty is independent of Disney+; it is not a Disney-operated or Disney-endorsed replacement. Compatibility can vary by browser, operating system, country, plan, title, and service changes. Check Teleparty’s own current compatibility and support information before relying on it for a specific event.

What each participant needs
- Legitimate access to the streaming service being watched. For Disney+, each participant should have their own Disney+ access for every participant rather than relying on one person’s account.
- A supported desktop browser with the Teleparty browser extension, or the Teleparty Android app where supported.
- Access to the same title in the same region or catalog, where applicable.
- A stable internet connection.
How to use Teleparty with Disney+
- Each participant signs in to Disney+ independently.
- Participants use a supported desktop browser with Teleparty installed, or the supported Android app where applicable.
- The host opens the desired Disney+ movie or episode.
- The host starts a Teleparty session using Teleparty’s controls.
- The host shares the generated invitation through the service’s normal sharing method.
- Participants open the invitation, join the session, and use the synchronized controls and chat.
If a participant cannot join, check whether the extension or app is installed, whether the browser or operating system is supported, whether everyone is signed in, and whether the title is available to everyone. These are Teleparty compatibility issues—not evidence that Disney+ GroupWatch has returned.

If nobody can use Teleparty, everyone can open the same Disney+ title and start it after a countdown. This works as a basic social workaround, but it is not synchronized playback.
- Agree on the exact title and episode.
- Make sure everyone has reached the same starting point.
- Choose a countdown, such as “start at three, two, one, play.”
- Use a separate voice or text call for conversation.
The streams may drift because of buffering, different internet speeds, pauses, advertisements, regional title differences, or device behavior. Avoid rebroadcasting Disney+ video or audio through a call; use a legitimate synchronized-playback tool or have each participant stream independently.

Can a Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, or smart TV bring GroupWatch back?
No. Streaming hardware can help you watch Disney+ normally, but adding a Roku, Fire TV device, Apple TV, smart TV, or game console does not restore a feature removed from the Disney+ apps and website.
Hardware may still be useful if your existing device cannot play Disney+ reliably or if you want to watch a Teleparty session from a supported computer and display that computer on a television.
