Spoilers for the entire film: Sandra Voyter is acquitted of murdering Samuel, but Anatomy of a Fall never establishes that she is factually innocent. The court reaches a legal conclusion; the viewer is left with an unresolved question about what happened and who, if anyone, bears moral responsibility.

Spoilers for the entire film.

Sandra Voyter is acquitted of murdering Samuel, but the film never proves that she is factually innocent. The court reaches a legal conclusion; the audience is denied an objective reconstruction of the fall. Samuel’s death may have been a murder, a suicide influenced by years of conflict, or an accident or self-inflicted fall that no one can fully explain.

That uncertainty is the point of Justine Triet and Arthur Harari’s Anatomy of a Fall. The ending does not conceal a definitive answer that can be extracted from one clue. Instead, it asks what people do when the truth is incomplete but a decision is unavoidable. The court must decide whether Sandra is criminally responsible. Daniel must decide which version of his parents’ marriage he can live with. The viewer must decide how much confidence to place in either story.

The short answer: who is responsible for Samuel’s death?

Question What the film establishes
Was Sandra convicted of killing Samuel? No. She is acquitted.
Does the verdict prove that Samuel committed suicide? No. It only means the prosecution did not establish Sandra’s guilt to the required legal standard.
Does the film prove Sandra pushed Samuel? No. The fatal fall is never shown or conclusively reconstructed.
Could Sandra still be morally responsible? Yes. The film leaves open the possibility that she contributed to Samuel’s despair without directly murdering him.

The most defensible interpretation is therefore two-part: Sandra is not proven to have murdered Samuel, but Samuel’s actual cause of death remains unresolved. Legal responsibility and moral responsibility are not identical.

What happens at the end?

Daniel’s testimony gives the defense its strongest account of Samuel’s state of mind. He remembers a conversation in the car in which Samuel describes suicide as something a person has already decided to do and merely has to carry out. Daniel connects that memory to the earlier aspirin incident: Sandra had said Samuel may have overdosed, and Snoop became ill after apparently ingesting Samuel’s vomit.

Daniel later tests the aspirin explanation on Snoop. The experience makes Sandra’s account seem credible to him. It also gives him a way to understand Samuel’s behavior that does not require believing Sandra murdered him. His testimony helps the court accept the possibility that Samuel was suicidal and that the fall was not a homicide.

After Sandra is acquitted, she returns to Daniel. Their reunion is tender, but it is not a restoration of the family as it was before Samuel’s death. Daniel has not simply “solved” the case. He has become the decisive witness and has chosen the version of events that can protect his mother and allow both of them to continue living.

The final movement is consequently less interested in revealing what happened on the roof than in showing the cost of choosing a story when certainty is impossible.

Why Daniel’s testimony does not settle the mystery

Daniel’s evidence is persuasive, but it is not an objective recording of the past. He is a child under extraordinary pressure. He has lost his father, is living through a public trial, and understands that his testimony may determine whether his mother goes to prison. He is effectively being asked to choose which account of his parents’ marriage he can endorse.

That leaves several possibilities:

  • Daniel may be accurately remembering the car conversation.
  • He may be reconstructing a confusing memory after hearing the adults’ competing explanations.
  • He may be consciously shaping his testimony to save Sandra.
  • His account may contain a genuine memory and a later interpretation that he has attached to it.

The film does not establish that Daniel is lying. It also does not establish that he is a perfectly reliable witness. His testimony wins the case because it creates reasonable doubt and offers a coherent explanation of Samuel’s behavior, not because it provides an externally verifiable record of the fatal moment.

This distinction is crucial. Daniel gives Sandra a survivable story. He does not give the audience indisputable truth.

Does the recorded argument prove that Sandra killed Samuel?

No. The recording is important, but it does not capture the fall.

The argument reveals the hostility inside Sandra and Samuel’s marriage. It allows the prosecution to present Sandra as cruel, resentful, manipulative, and capable of turning personal conflict into a weapon. It also makes Samuel’s distress and possible suicidal thinking seem plausible. The same recording can therefore support opposing interpretations.

Its evidentiary force is indirect. It changes how the court interprets the couple’s motives, emotional states, and credibility. It does not show Sandra striking Samuel, pushing him, or even being with him at the exact moment of the fall.

The prosecution’s case is built from circumstantial material, including:

  • the violent argument between Sandra and Samuel;
  • questions about the timing and trajectory of the fall;
  • the nature of Samuel’s head injury;
  • Sandra’s affairs and the conflicts surrounding the marriage;
  • her use of autobiographical experiences in her fiction;
  • inconsistencies and changes in her testimony; and
  • the possibility that Sandra could transform a damaging reality into a persuasive narrative.

The defense responds that there is no conclusive murder mechanism, that suicide remains possible, and that Daniel’s testimony supports Sandra’s account. Neither side produces a complete, independently confirmed reconstruction. Both are constructing narratives from partial evidence.

Could Sandra be morally responsible without being a murderer?

Yes. This is the film’s most complicated possibility.

Sandra and Samuel have spent years damaging each other through disputes over work, childcare, sex, jealousy, authorship, and the unequal distribution of frustration. Their relationship is not reduced to a single argument. It is a long accumulation of disappointments and resentments in which neither partner is presented as an uncomplicated victim or villain.

That makes a third interpretation possible. Sandra may not have physically caused Samuel’s death, yet she may have contributed to the despair that led him toward suicide. In that reading, “Sandra did not murder him” does not mean “Sandra had no responsibility for what happened.”

That remains an interpretation, not an official solution. The film also gives viewers reasons to distrust Sandra. She reshapes details, lies about some matters, and is professionally skilled at converting lived experience into compelling stories. Her ability to tell a convincing version of events is both a source of power and a reason for suspicion.

At the same time, the trial exposes the assumptions applied to her. Sandra is emotionally reserved, sexually independent, bisexual, and unwilling to perform conventional grief in the way the court or the public may expect. Those facts can be treated as evidence of coldness or guilt even though they do not prove that she killed Samuel. The film asks viewers to examine not only the evidence, but also the prejudices through which the evidence is interpreted.

Why the film never shows a definitive murder flashback

A conclusive flashback would turn Anatomy of a Fall into a conventional whodunit. It would tell the audience which testimony was true and which clues had been misread. Triet and Harari instead make the unseen fall the formal center of the film.

We encounter the event through fragments:

  • recorded sound;
  • testimony;
  • medical interpretation;
  • memories;
  • theories about timing and trajectory; and
  • stories told by people with something to lose.

None of these fragments gives us the whole marriage or the whole event. The viewer is placed in the same position as the court: forced to make a judgment from evidence that is real but incomplete.

The word “anatomy” consequently refers to more than the examination of a body or a crime. The trial dissects a relationship. Private arguments, sexual history, professional ambitions, parenting failures, and intimate humiliations are removed from their original context and rearranged as public evidence. But a courtroom cannot recover the entire truth of a marriage, because no outsider ever possessed that truth in full—not the lawyers, not the judge, and not the audience.

The importance of sound in the ending

Sound is one of the film’s most important clues and one of its central warnings about evidence.

Samuel’s loud music interrupts Sandra’s interview near the beginning. It establishes sound as a form of domestic aggression and makes the house difficult to read visually. While Sandra is downstairs, Samuel’s actions remain off-screen; his presence is experienced through noise rather than direct observation.

The later recording of the argument continues that pattern. Sound becomes evidence, but recorded sound is still framed and partial. It captures an exchange without necessarily explaining what led to it or what happened afterward. The recording can expose hostility while remaining incapable of answering the central question.

This is why the audio does not function as a hidden confession. It tells us that the marriage was volatile. It does not tell us who caused the fall.

What Snoop contributes to the explanation

Snoop is not a secret witness who solves the case. The dog’s importance is practical and emotional.

Practically, Snoop allows Daniel to test Sandra’s explanation of the aspirin incident. That test makes the account feel more believable to Daniel and helps him connect an earlier event with Samuel’s possible suicidal thinking.

Emotionally, Snoop becomes a quiet link between the family’s past and its uncertain future. The dog survives, Daniel survives, and Sandra returns home—but none of them can restore the world that existed before Samuel’s death. Snoop’s presence reinforces the film’s refusal to provide a neat resolution: life continues alongside an explanation that may never become fully reliable.

What Sandra and Daniel’s final reunion means

The reunion is not proof of Sandra’s innocence. It is a choice made under uncertainty.

Daniel has protected his mother, but he has also crossed a moral threshold. His testimony selects the story that will determine her freedom. Whether he has remembered accurately, interpreted events under pressure, or consciously adapted the truth, he now has to live with the consequences of that choice.

Sandra returns to him because the legal system has accepted a plausible account and because the two survivors choose to remain connected. Their embrace is therefore both loving and burdened. They are together, but they share responsibility for a narrative that cannot be independently confirmed.

The Mandalorian And Grogu - DVD
  • The evil Empire has fallen, and Imperial warlords are scattered throughout the galaxy. As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion fought for, they enlist the help of Mandalorian Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his young apprentice Grogu. Some flashing lights sequences or patterns may affect photosensitive viewers.

The emotional answer is stronger than the factual answer. Sandra and Daniel choose one another. The film does not ask us to treat that choice as evidence that Sandra is innocent. It asks us to consider what people do when certainty is unavailable and action is unavoidable.

Three possible readings of Samuel’s death

1. Sandra killed Samuel

This reading emphasizes the violent argument, the disputed physical evidence, Sandra’s inconsistencies, and the possibility that her storytelling ability allows her to manipulate the court. Her relationship with Samuel was hostile enough that murder cannot be dismissed as emotionally impossible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

But the film does not provide a conclusive mechanism or a visual account of the killing. This interpretation remains possible, not proven.

2. Samuel died by suicide

This reading is strengthened by Daniel’s testimony, the aspirin episode, Samuel’s apparent distress, and the possibility that the fall followed a decision he had already made. It is the explanation the defense builds successfully enough to produce an acquittal.

Yet Daniel’s testimony is psychologically and evidentially unstable, and the verdict does not certify suicide as a fact. Acquittal means the prosecution failed to prove murder; it does not mean the court has reconstructed Samuel’s final actions with certainty.

3. Sandra contributed to a suicide

This reading occupies the morally uncomfortable space between the first two. Sandra may not have pushed Samuel, but years of conflict may have helped create the despair from which he could not escape. Triet’s comments about the ending support considering this possibility.

It should not be mistaken for a confirmed explanation. The film leaves open other possibilities, including an accident or an event whose precise sequence can no longer be recovered.

Why the verdict matters—and what it does not mean

The verdict matters because criminal courts must decide even when the past cannot be known perfectly. Sandra is acquitted because the evidence does not establish her guilt to the required standard. That is a meaningful legal outcome, not a declaration that every suspicion about her is false.

The trial also demonstrates how legal truth is produced. Evidence does not arrive with a single, permanent meaning. A recording can portray Sandra as dangerous or Samuel as desperate. A sexual history can be treated as motive or as irrelevant prejudice. A child’s memory can be treated as reliable testimony or as a pressured reconstruction. The side that organizes these details most persuasively may prevail without possessing a complete account.

That is why the film’s ending should not be summarized as “Sandra got away with murder” or “Daniel proved Samuel killed himself.” Both statements claim more certainty than the film supplies.

Where to revisit the film’s details

For viewers who want to study the construction of the ending rather than simply rewatch the plot, the Anatomy of a Fall Blu-ray is especially relevant. The documented Criterion edition includes an interview with Triet, deleted and alternate scenes with commentary, rehearsal and audition footage, and an essay. A DVD edition is a legitimate secondary option, although edition contents can differ by market and release.

The 2024 Gallimard publication Anatomie d’une chute: Scénario commenté by Justine Triet and Arthur Harari is another useful companion. It presents the screenplay with commentary and production material, making it valuable for readers interested in how the film constructs ambiguity. It complements the film; it does not replace the experience of watching the deliberately unseen fall.

Final interpretation

If forced to choose the most defensible answer, Sandra is not proven to have murdered Samuel, and the legal ending supports her acquittal. But the evidence does not establish a clean suicide explanation either.

Daniel’s testimony is decisive because it creates a story that can be lived with, not because it supplies an objective record. Sandra may be innocent of murder, morally implicated in Samuel’s despair, or responsible for more than the court can prove. The film intentionally refuses to settle that question.

The court must decide. Daniel must choose. The audience must live with doubt.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Sandra’s acquittal prove that Samuel committed suicide?

No. Sandra’s acquittal means the prosecution did not prove beyond the required legal standard that she murdered Samuel. It does not establish that Samuel definitely committed suicide or that every uncertainty about his death has been resolved.

Is Daniel lying in his testimony?

The testimony is persuasive because Daniel recalls Samuel discussing suicide and connects that memory to the aspirin incident. However, Daniel is a pressured child witness, and the film does not independently verify the decisive car conversation. His testimony creates reasonable doubt rather than objective certainty.

Does the recorded argument prove that Sandra killed Samuel?

No. The recording proves that Sandra and Samuel had a deeply hostile argument, but it does not record the fall or show Sandra causing it. Its importance is indirect: it changes how the court interprets their relationship, motives, and credibility.

Who does the film ultimately say is responsible for Samuel’s death?

The film leaves this unresolved. Sandra may have killed Samuel, contributed to a suicide without directly pushing him, or been unable to prevent an accidental or self-inflicted fall. The ending deliberately separates legal guilt from broader moral responsibility.

The Bottom Line

Sandra is legally acquitted, but Samuel’s actual cause of death remains unresolved. The film does not prove murder, suicide, or Daniel’s testimony to be wholly true or false. Its most nuanced possibility is that Sandra did not directly kill Samuel while still contributing to the despair that may have led to his death.
