How to Replace Windows Media Center on Windows 11 with Kodi

Windows Media Center cannot be installed officially on Windows 11. Learn how to use Kodi as a supported living-room alternative, add local and network media, connect a TV, choose a remote, and assess live-TV and DVR limitations.

You cannot install the original Microsoft Windows Media Center on Windows 11 through a supported Microsoft download or Optional Features setting. Microsoft discontinued it beginning with Windows 10. The practical current solution is to install Kodi, add your authorized local or network media, connect the PC to a television, and optionally use an MCE-compatible remote for sofa-friendly control.

Windows Media Center is not available on Windows 11

You cannot install the original Microsoft Windows Media Center on Windows 11 through a supported Microsoft download, Optional Features setting, or normal upgrade. Microsoft discontinued Windows Media Center beginning with Windows 10, and it is not included in Windows 11.

That leaves two important distinctions:

  • Windows Media Center was Microsoft’s television-oriented interface for live TV, recordings, music, photos, videos, and remote control.
  • Windows Media Player Legacy is a separate playback application that remains an optional feature in some Windows 11 editions. Installing it does not restore Windows Media Center, its ten-foot interface, or its television and DVR functions. DVD playback is not included in the Windows Media Player Legacy feature.

Avoid unofficial “Windows Media Center for Windows 11” installers, activation packages, and scripts that replace system files. They are not supported Microsoft components, may be unsafe, and do not turn Windows 11 into a supported Windows Media Center system.

The practical replacement: Kodi for Windows

For a living-room computer, Kodi is the closest practical replacement for the general Windows Media Center experience. It is an independent, open-source media application—not an official Microsoft replacement—with a television-friendly, ten-foot interface designed for use from a distance with a remote control. Kodi can organize and play video, music, photos, podcasts, and other media from local storage, network storage, and supported online sources.

The current official Kodi Windows download page lists Kodi v21.3 Omega, with 64-bit and 32-bit installers and a Microsoft Store installation route. Use Kodi’s official download source rather than a third-party “WMC for Windows 11” package.

Check the Windows 11 computer first

The computer must already meet Windows 11’s baseline requirements. Microsoft’s requirements include:

Requirement Windows 11 baseline
Processor Compatible 64-bit processor, 1 GHz or faster, with at least two cores
Memory 4 GB of RAM
Storage 64 GB or larger storage device
Firmware UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability
Security TPM 2.0
Graphics DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver
Display High-definition display larger than 9 inches, measured diagonally

These are operating-system requirements, not a guarantee of flawless 4K, HDR, high-frame-rate, multichannel audio, Dolby formats, or live-TV playback. Those capabilities depend on the specific processor, graphics driver, television, receiver, media files, codecs, network, and application configuration. Kodi’s own Windows documentation also discusses graphics-driver and memory considerations for media-center use.

Install Kodi on Windows 11

  1. Open Kodi’s official Windows download page.
  2. Choose the installer that matches the computer’s architecture. Most current Windows 11 PCs use the 64-bit version. The Microsoft Store option is another supported installation route.
  3. Run the installer and accept the standard installation prompts.
  4. Launch Kodi from the Windows Start menu.
  5. Keep the initial setup focused on media you own or are authorized to access.

Do not download modified Kodi builds or packages that promise to recreate Windows Media Center. Kodi itself is legitimate software, but third-party add-ons and preconfigured builds can have different security, privacy, licensing, and copyright implications.

Add movies, TV episodes, music, and photos

Kodi can play files stored on the Windows 11 computer and, where configured correctly, files on network storage. Before adding sources, organize the underlying files so the library can identify them accurately.

  • Seamless streaming for any room: With Roku Streaming Stick 4K, watch your favorite entertainment on any TV in the house, even in rooms farther from your router thanks to the long-range Wi-Fi receiver.

  • Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight

Recommended folder organization

  • Movies: Keep each movie in a clearly named file or, preferably, its own folder.
  • Television: Use separate show folders with season folders and consistent episode names.
  • Music: Keep album and artist information consistent in the file tags and folder names.
  • Photos: Group photos into folders by event, year, or other useful category.

General Kodi library workflow

  1. Open the relevant media section in Kodi.
  2. Choose the option to add a media source.
  3. Select a local folder or browse to an available network share.
  4. When Kodi asks what the source contains, select the appropriate content type, such as movies, television shows, music, or pictures.
  5. Allow Kodi to scan the source and retrieve library information and artwork where supported.
  6. Review the results. Correct incorrectly identified titles or remove sources that were added by mistake.

Menu wording can change between Kodi releases and skins, so the exact labels may not be identical on every installation. The important choice is to add the correct folder and assign the correct content type.

Keep a separate backup of the original media. Kodi’s database, posters, and library metadata do not replace a backup of the video, music, or photo files themselves.

Connect the Windows 11 PC to a television

Connect the computer to the television or an audio/video receiver using an output supported by both devices, usually HDMI. Then configure Windows and the receiver chain:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Connect the PC to the television or receiver.
  2. On the television, select the input used by the PC.
  3. In Windows display settings, choose whether the television duplicates the PC display or acts as the primary or secondary display.
  4. Select a resolution and refresh rate supported by the computer and television.
  5. In Windows sound settings, select the television or receiver as the audio output.
  6. Test a short video and confirm that picture, sound, and remote viewing distance are satisfactory.

A cable, receiver, graphics adapter, and television must all support the desired resolution, refresh rate, HDR mode, and audio format. Do not assume that a Windows 11 PC can deliver every advertised television or home-theater feature simply because Kodi is installed.

Add a remote for a living-room setup

A keyboard and mouse are enough for initial setup, but a remote makes Kodi much more practical from a sofa. Kodi’s Windows documentation states that it runs natively on Windows 11 and supports MCE remotes out of the box.

Roku Streaming Stick HD with Voice Remote
  • HD streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
  • Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
  • No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
  • TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.

An MCE-compatible USB remote for Kodi can provide navigation, playback, volume, and other media controls. Treat it as an optional Kodi control accessory—not as a way to reinstall or reactivate Microsoft Windows Media Center. Before buying, verify the listing’s current Windows 11 compatibility information, USB receiver requirements, button mappings, and return policy. Exact behavior can vary between remote models and receivers.

What about live TV, DVR, program guides, and FM radio?

This is where a Kodi setup may differ most from the original Windows Media Center. Local-file playback is comparatively straightforward. Live television, electronic program guides, scheduled recording, and tuner support require a complete hardware-and-software chain.

Possible third-party arrangements include Kodi paired with a compatible TV backend or a separate Windows DVR application. Other alternatives sometimes suggested for this use case include Plex, NextPVR, and MediaPortal. Their availability and feature support can vary by country, broadcast standard, tuner, provider, and current software version. None should be presented as a universal one-click replacement for Windows Media Center.

Before purchasing a tuner or planning a DVR setup, verify all of the following:

  • the tuner’s broadcast standard and geographic compatibility;
  • current Windows 11 drivers;
  • compatibility with the chosen DVR backend and Kodi integration, if applicable;
  • antenna, cable, satellite, or provider requirements;
  • support for encrypted or DRM-protected channels;
  • whether recording, scheduling, and guide data are currently supported;
  • any subscription, account, or regional restrictions.

Do not promise live TV, an electronic program guide, DVR recording, FM radio, or protected-channel playback without testing the particular tuner, service, application, and location together.

Should you keep an old Windows 10 Media Center PC?

An older computer that already has Windows Media Center may continue to run it, but that does not make it a good supported long-term media-center platform. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Microsoft’s support guidance recommends moving to Windows 11 or another supported path rather than remaining on an unsupported operating system solely to preserve Windows Media Center.

Upgrading an existing Windows Media Center computer should not be described as a way to preserve the application. Windows 11 does not include Windows Media Center, and an upgrade may remove or leave the application unusable. Back up recordings and other files before changing the operating system, and plan a replacement workflow rather than relying on an unsupported installation.

Windows Media Player Legacy is not the answer

If you only need a basic desktop player, you may be able to enable Windows Media Player Legacy through Windows’ Optional Features settings. That feature is separate from Windows Media Center. It does not provide the large-screen library interface, TV guide, DVR scheduling, remote-first navigation, or other living-room functions associated with WMC.

It also does not include DVD playback as part of the Legacy Player feature. Choose it for its own supported playback purpose, not because its name suggests that it restores Windows Media Center.

A sensible Windows 11 media-center checklist

  • Confirm that the PC is a supported Windows 11 system.
  • Back up media before reorganizing folders or changing operating systems.
  • Install Kodi from its official Windows source.
  • Organize local or network media into clearly named folders.
  • Add sources and assign the correct content type.
  • Test artwork, subtitles, audio, and playback before moving the PC to the television.
  • Configure Windows display and audio output for the television or receiver.
  • Add an MCE-compatible remote only if remote navigation is important.
  • Research tuner, driver, DVR, guide, and regional requirements separately if live TV is essential.
  • Do not use unofficial WMC packages or assume that Kodi automatically provides every WMC feature.

Bottom line

The original Windows Media Center cannot be installed on Windows 11 through a supported Microsoft method. Windows Media Player Legacy is a different, more limited application. For a current television-oriented setup, install Kodi from its official Windows source, add authorized local or network media, connect the PC to the television, and optionally use an MCE-compatible remote. Live TV and DVR functions require additional, carefully verified hardware and software rather than a simple Windows feature switch.

Kodi is the most practical general-purpose replacement for a Windows 11 living-room media center. It can organize and play authorized local and network media through a television-friendly interface.

Can Kodi provide live TV and DVR on Windows 11?

Possibly, but live TV and DVR require a compatible tuner, current Windows 11 drivers, a suitable backend, guide data, and compliance with regional or provider restrictions. Compatibility must be checked as a complete system.

The Bottom Line
