The best free and open-source way to watch YouTube depends on your screen and workflow: use FreeTube for a desktop app, NewPipe for Android, Invidious in a browser, yt-dlp with mpv for a scriptable power-user setup, and Kodi for television viewing. No single option is universally best, and all can be affected by changes to YouTube.
There is no single best open-source YouTube tool. The right choice depends on where you watch: FreeTube is the easiest desktop app, NewPipe is the strongest direct Android option, Invidious is the browser-based choice, yt-dlp plus mpv is best for automation and local playback, and Kodi is the most suitable for a television or home-theater setup.
All of these projects interact with a changing third-party service. You should expect occasional breakage, changing installation requirements, or unavailable public instances. Check each project’s current release information before making it your only way to watch YouTube.
The best choice for each type of viewer
| If you want to… | Start with… | Why | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Use a conventional desktop application | FreeTube | A graphical client for Windows, macOS, and Linux that does not use the official YouTube API. | Features and upstream compatibility can change, and its desktop and mobile offerings should not be treated as identical. |
| Watch on an Android phone without Google Play Services | NewPipe | Lightweight, account-free playback with background audio, queues, subtitles, downloads, and support for several services. | The project describes the app as beta software, so bugs and temporary failures are possible. |
| Watch in a browser | Invidious | A privacy-oriented alternative front end with subscriptions independent of a Google account. | Public instances differ in availability, speed, configuration, and operator trust. |
| Automate playback, downloads, or scripts | yt-dlp plus mpv | A flexible command-line extractor and a fast local media player. | It requires technical setup and is not a replacement for a browsing interface with recommendations and comments. |
| Watch from a television or sofa | Kodi with its YouTube add-on | A free, open-source media center designed around a television interface and remote control. | The add-on must be installed and maintained through Kodi, and its requirements can change. |
| Play downloaded or locally stored video | VLC | A mature, cross-platform local media player. | It is best treated as a playback companion here, not as the primary current YouTube client. |
What “free and open source” does—and does not—mean here
These tools are free to obtain and built from publicly available source code, but they are not all the same kind of product. Some are complete applications, some are alternative web front ends, and some are individual components in a command-line workflow.

- Alternative front ends such as FreeTube, NewPipe, Invidious, and LibreTube retrieve or present YouTube content without being the official YouTube application.
- Playback tools such as mpv and VLC primarily play media. They do not necessarily provide search, subscriptions, comments, or recommendations.
- Download and extraction tools such as yt-dlp can retrieve media streams from supported sites, but technical ability is not the same as permission to download every video.
- Kodi is a general media center whose YouTube add-on provides a television-friendly way to access YouTube.
Open source also does not guarantee permanent compatibility, anonymity, or identical privacy behavior in every deployment. In particular, a self-hosted service and a public instance operated by someone else involve different trust decisions.
FreeTube: the straightforward desktop choice
If you want something that feels most like a normal desktop YouTube application, start with FreeTube. Its official documentation describes a desktop application for Windows 10 and later, macOS 12 and later, and Linux. It does not use the official YouTube API, which is part of its appeal for people who want a separate, open-source client rather than an API-dependent wrapper.
FreeTube is a good fit when you want a graphical interface, mouse and keyboard support, and a more familiar browsing experience without building a command-line setup. It is the recommendation I would give to a documentary viewer who mainly watches on a laptop or desktop and does not need elaborate automation.
What to expect
- A conventional desktop application rather than a terminal workflow.
- Support for the three major desktop operating-system families listed above.
- A design that avoids dependence on the official YouTube API.
- Compatibility that may need adjustment when YouTube changes how its service works.
Do not automatically transfer the desktop description to phones. FreeTube also has a separate official iPhone and iPad offering whose listed features include ad-free playback, no telemetry, background audio, AirPlay, picture-in-picture, offline playback, and downloads from multiple sites. Those are platform-specific product claims; they should not be assumed to describe every FreeTube build.
Best for: desktop viewers who want the closest thing in this list to a normal open-source YouTube client.
NewPipe: the strongest direct Android answer
NewPipe is the clearest recommendation for Android users who want to avoid the official, Google-dependent YouTube app. The project describes it as a libre, lightweight streaming front end that can work without a user account, proprietary libraries, or Google Play Services.
NewPipe is not limited to YouTube. Its project documentation lists support for services including PeerTube, Bandcamp, SoundCloud, and media.ccc.de. That broader service support gives it an advantage over Android clients focused only on YouTube.
Useful NewPipe features
- Playback up to 4K, when the source and device support it.
- Background audio and popup playback.
- Live streams, subtitles or closed captions, search, and queues.
- Local playlists and downloading capabilities.
- Use without signing in to a Google account.
The trade-off is stability. NewPipe’s repository warns that the application is in beta, so it is better described as feature-rich and privacy-oriented than as flawless. A temporary failure after a change on YouTube’s side is a normal possibility for this category of software. Install it through the project’s current official distribution instructions rather than relying on an old APK found through a search engine.

Best for: Android phone and tablet users who want background playback, downloads, and a Google-independent experience.
LibreTube: a second Android option
LibreTube is another GPL-3.0-licensed Android alternative front end focused specifically on YouTube. It is worth considering if you prefer its interface or development direction, but it should be treated as an alternative rather than a universal replacement for NewPipe.
Android front ends can depend on changing upstream extraction methods or backends. Check LibreTube’s current repository instructions, release information, and any required backend configuration before installing it. NewPipe has the broader documented multi-service scope; LibreTube’s narrower YouTube focus may be an advantage for someone who wants a dedicated client.
Invidious: the browser and self-hosting route
Invidious is an open-source alternative front end for YouTube, licensed under AGPL-3.0. Its official project description highlights no tracking, no ads, subscriptions independent of a Google account, multilingual support, and an API.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a viewer, the basic idea is simple: open an Invidious instance in a browser and search or watch through that interface. You do not need to install a desktop or Android application, which makes Invidious attractive on computers where installing software is restricted or inconvenient.
Public instance versus self-hosting
These are two very different experiences:
- Using a public instance: the operator supplies the server. You must accept that the instance may be slow, unavailable, incorrectly configured, or operated by someone whose privacy practices you have not independently verified.
- Self-hosting: you deploy and maintain the software yourself. The official Invidious documentation covers instances, installation, preferences, subscription import and export, reverse proxies, geoblocking, troubleshooting, and API endpoints. This gives you more control, but also makes you responsible for updates, uptime, security, and server resources.
Invidious subscriptions being independent from a Google account does not mean that every instance is equally private. It means the project provides a different subscription model; the server operator can still be an important part of your trust boundary.
Best for: browser-based viewing, privacy-conscious users who do not want a local app, and technically comfortable readers who may want to run their own instance.
yt-dlp plus mpv: the power-user workflow
For automation, keyboard control, scripting, and local playback, the most flexible combination is yt-dlp with mpv.

yt-dlp is a command-line audio and video downloader with support for many websites. mpv is the viewing layer. Its documented yt-dlp/youtube-dl hook can pass a supported website URL to the player, allowing you to play media without manually downloading it first.
Why this pairing is powerful
- You can launch playback from a URL, script, file manager, or keyboard shortcut.
- yt-dlp supports configuration files, format selection, output templates, and post-processing.
- mpv provides a lightweight, keyboard-friendly playback interface.
- You can choose between streaming through mpv and saving a local copy for an explicitly lawful offline use.
Install yt-dlp, mpv, and FFmpeg through the package or release channels appropriate to your operating system. yt-dlp’s documentation strongly recommends FFmpeg and FFprobe, especially when the best video and audio streams arrive separately and need to be merged.
Example: play a URL through mpv
With mpv configured to use yt-dlp, a basic workflow is:
mpv "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID"
Whether this works immediately depends on how your mpv package is built and where yt-dlp is installed. mpv’s yt-dlp integration can be configured for URL handling and format behavior, so consult the manual if the URL opens as a webpage, playback fails, or the wrong format is selected.
Example: download a selected format with yt-dlp
yt-dlp -f "bv*+ba/b" --merge-output-format mp4 "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID"
The format expression asks yt-dlp to prefer the best available video and audio combination, falling back to a single combined format when necessary. The result depends on what the source provides; it is not a promise that every video will be available in a particular resolution or container.
This is not the best first choice for someone who wants built-in search, channel navigation, subscriptions, comments, or recommendations. It is a toolkit rather than a finished YouTube browsing environment.
Best for: technically comfortable users who value automation, local playback, format control, and keyboard-driven operation.
Kodi: the living-room option
Kodi is a free and open-source media player and entertainment hub for Linux, macOS, Windows, iOS, tvOS, and Android. Its defining advantage is not that it is the smallest or simplest YouTube tool; it is that it is designed around a television-oriented “10-foot” interface and remote controls.

- IP65 RATING AND UP TO 3M DROP PROTECTION(3) – protects against spills and drops.
- POCKET-SIZED – fits easily in pockets and small bags.
- SPACE TO OWN YOUR AI CONTENT – speed and capacity to download your high-res clips and photo edits.
- 256-BIT AES ENCRYPTION(4) – helps keep private files secure with password protection.
Kodi’s official repository includes a GPL-licensed YouTube add-on. The add-on supports YouTube playback, playlists, stream files, audio-only playback, subtitles, channel navigation, and account-related actions through Kodi’s interface. Install it through Kodi’s user interface and check the current add-on requirements rather than following an old setup guide. Add-on versions and authentication requirements are volatile; even the official listing’s version information can change.
A practical Kodi setup
- Install Kodi on a supported computer, Android device, or television-oriented platform.
- Open Kodi’s add-on browser and locate the YouTube add-on in the official Kodi repository.
- Install the add-on through Kodi’s interface.
- Configure playback, subtitles, and account features only if you need them.
- Test channel navigation and playback before treating Kodi as your only living-room viewer.
Best for: viewers who want to watch documentaries and other YouTube videos from a sofa, television, or home-theater interface.
VLC: keep it for local playback
VLC is a free and open-source media player with official documentation and builds for desktop systems, Android, and iOS. It is an excellent companion if you have legally obtained local video files, but it is not the primary recommendation for browsing YouTube in this comparison.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe distinction matters. VLC is a general-purpose player; the more defensible direct-YouTube workflows in this list are FreeTube, NewPipe, Invidious, Kodi’s YouTube add-on, and mpv with yt-dlp. Use VLC when the file is already on your device or network, not because it is established here as a complete, current YouTube client.
Downloads, offline viewing, and legal use
NewPipe and yt-dlp both provide downloading capabilities, and that can be useful for a lawful offline library—for example, when a creator explicitly permits downloading, the video is released under a suitable license, or you otherwise have the necessary rights.
Downloading is not automatically authorized merely because an application makes it technically possible. Respect copyright, the creator’s permissions and license, and the applicable platform terms in your country. Do not assume that “open source” software grants permission to copy someone else’s documentary, music, lecture, or livestream.
If you intentionally maintain a local library, an external SSD for offline video is an optional storage convenience, not a requirement for any of the main recommendations. Choose capacity and backup practices based on the size and importance of your collection; the research does not justify a particular drive model or capacity.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Privacy and account trade-offs
These tools can reduce dependence on the official YouTube application, but “privacy-friendly” is not one universal technical guarantee.
- FreeTube and NewPipe: useful when you want a local client that does not require the official YouTube app or, in NewPipe’s case, Google Play Services and an account. Review each project’s current settings and behavior rather than assuming every build has identical defaults.
- Invidious: the instance matters. With a public instance, your requests pass through an operator’s server. Self-hosting gives you more control but requires administration.
- yt-dlp and mpv: the local playback layer can be minimal, but URLs, scripts, shell history, downloaded files, and network logs can still reveal activity depending on your system and setup.
- Kodi: basic playback does not require every account feature. If you sign in for subscriptions or personalized actions, treat that as a separate privacy decision.
Subscriptions also work differently. Invidious explicitly supports subscriptions independent of a Google account; NewPipe and other clients may maintain local playlists or subscriptions; Kodi can expose account-related actions through its add-on. Do not expect a local list in one application to synchronize automatically with your official YouTube account.
Best Value
- Capacity Display Variance: 250GB external ssd often appears as around 232GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 250 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage

What to do when playback stops working
Alternative front ends are especially sensitive to changes made by the service they access. Use this order of operations:
- Check the project’s current status. Look at the official repository, release notes, issue tracker, or documentation. A widespread failure is usually not fixed by reinstalling the same old version.
- Update the application and its dependencies. For yt-dlp, update through the channel recommended by its documentation. For Kodi, update the add-on through Kodi’s own interface. For Invidious, check the instance status or deployment documentation.
- Try a different, permitted playback format. With yt-dlp and mpv, separate audio/video streams may require FFmpeg and FFprobe. Missing dependencies commonly explain absent audio, failed merges, or limited format choices.
- Separate client failure from instance failure. If one Invidious public instance fails, that does not prove the Invidious project itself is unavailable. Conversely, switching instances does not solve a problem caused by a broader upstream change.
- Test a non-account video and a second channel. A sign-in, age restriction, region restriction, livestream, or private video can fail for reasons unrelated to ordinary playback.
- Keep a fallback. A documentary viewer might use FreeTube on a desktop, NewPipe on Android, or Kodi in the living room, while retaining VLC for local files. No single alternative front end should be treated as guaranteed permanently available.
My practical recommendations
For most readers, choose based on the primary screen rather than on a broad ranking:
- Desktop: FreeTube is the best starting point because it provides a conventional graphical client.
- Android: NewPipe is the strongest direct recommendation for background playback, subtitles, queues, and downloads without the official Google-dependent app. Consider LibreTube as an alternative.
- Browser: Invidious is the natural fit, but evaluate the particular public instance or self-host your own.
- Power-user workflow: yt-dlp plus mpv offers the most control, especially when you want scripts, local playback, or format selection.
- Television: Kodi with its YouTube add-on is the best match for a remote-controlled, 10-foot interface.
- Local files: VLC remains the sensible general playback companion.
The important conclusion is not that one project “wins.” FreeTube, NewPipe, Invidious, yt-dlp with mpv, and Kodi solve different problems. Pick the workflow that matches your device, comfort level, account needs, and willingness to maintain a fallback when YouTube changes.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best open-source YouTube app for desktop?
For a desktop computer, FreeTube is the best starting point because it is a conventional open-source application for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Choose yt-dlp with mpv instead if you prefer command-line control, automation, or local playback over browsing features.
What is the best open-source YouTube app for Android without Google Play Services?
NewPipe is the strongest direct Android recommendation in this list. It supports background audio, popup playback, subtitles, queues, local playlists, and downloads, and it can work without Google Play Services or a user account. The project warns that it is beta software, so occasional bugs are possible.
Is Invidious safer or more private than using a public instance?
Invidious is the most suitable browser-based option, but the particular public instance matters. Instances can differ in uptime, speed, configuration, and operator trust. Self-hosting gives you more control but requires server maintenance and security responsibility.
Recommended Free Tools
Is it legal to download YouTube videos with open-source tools?
Tools such as NewPipe and yt-dlp can download media, but that does not automatically give you permission to copy every video. Follow copyright law, the creator’s license or permission, and applicable platform terms. Download only when you have the necessary rights.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Use FreeTube on a desktop, NewPipe on Android, Invidious in a browser, yt-dlp with mpv for automation and local playback, and Kodi for a television. Treat public instances, add-ons, and third-party extraction tools as changeable dependencies, and respect copyright and platform terms when saving videos.
