To turn closed captioning on or off, first identify your DIRECTV equipment. On a DIRECTV Gemini internet box, press Home and go to Settings > System > Device Preferences > Accessibility > Captioning > Display. On a satellite receiver or Genie, open Settings and look for Accessibility or Closed Captioning. Older HD DVRs commonly use Menu > Settings & Help > Settings > Display > Captioning.
Choose the instructions for your DIRECTV service
The steps depend on whether you use a DIRECTV Gemini box through the internet or a DIRECTV satellite receiver, Genie, or older HD DVR. On a Gemini box, closed captions are under Settings > System > Device Preferences > Accessibility > Captioning. On many satellite receivers, they are under Settings > Accessibility or Settings > Display > Captioning.
Turn captions on or off on a DIRECTV Gemini or STREAM box
Use these steps if your DIRECTV service runs over the internet and you have a Gemini device with the newer Gemini remote:
- Press Home on the Gemini remote.
- Select Settings.
- Open System, then select Device Preferences.
- Choose Accessibility.
- Select Captioning.
- Open Display, then switch closed captions on or off.
The wording can vary slightly after a software update, but the caption control is generally within the accessibility settings. If you see both a television setting and a device setting, change the setting on the Gemini box first.

Use the Gemini voice remote
If your Gemini remote has a microphone button, press it and say “Turn on captioning” or “Turn off captioning.” This voice shortcut applies to Gemini devices using the Gemini Voice remote. Older DIRECTV STREAM remotes and satellite remotes may not support the same command.
Turn captions on or off on a DIRECTV satellite receiver or Genie
Satellite receivers have had several menu designs. Start with the current-style menu, then use the older HD DVR path if your receiver shows different labels.
Current satellite menu
- Press Menu or Home, depending on your remote.
- Open Settings.
- Look for Accessibility, Closed Captioning, or a similarly named accessibility option.
- Open the captioning control and switch captions on or off.
On some newer Genie interfaces, closed-caption controls appear directly within Settings or an accessibility-related section rather than under Display.
Older DIRECTV HD DVR menu
Many older HD DVRs use this exact path:
Menu > Settings & Help > Settings > Display > Captioning

- ✅ DIRECTIONAL PAD - The RC82V Remote Control has a directional pad. Basic operations and functions can be made by pressing the direction, then pressing ok.
- ✅ TWO-WAY COMMUNICATION - The remote uses two-way communication to the AT&T TV to send feedback back and forth.
- ✅ INFRARED MODE - Basic remote operations can be performed in the Infrared Mode while others can be done in RF Mode.
On supported receivers, the Captioning screen lets you turn captions on or off and may also provide controls for caption font style, size, and color.
How to identify which menu applies
| What you have | Remote clue | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| DIRECTV via Internet/Gemini | Gemini remote with a microphone button | Home > Settings > System > Device Preferences > Accessibility > Captioning |
| DIRECTV via Satellite with Genie | Satellite dish service; menu may use Menu or Home | Settings, then look under Accessibility or Closed Captioning |
| Older satellite HD DVR | Older DIRECTV remote and traditional menu | Menu > Settings & Help > Settings > Display > Captioning |
A Gemini remote generally uses Home where older Genie remotes used Menu. If you are unsure, check whether your service uses a satellite dish or an internet connection, then open Settings and inspect the Accessibility, Display, and Captioning sections. Do not assume that one path works on every DIRECTV receiver generation.
Change captions in the DIRECTV app or on the website
These instructions are for the DIRECTV app or website, not a physical DIRECTV box.
DIRECTV app
- Open Settings.
- Select Preferences.
- Choose Captioning.
- Change the caption setting, including language or display options when available.
DIRECTV STREAM website
- Sign in to the DIRECTV STREAM website.
- Open Settings.
- Select Captioning.
- Edit the language or viewing options.
- Save the changes.
App and website preferences may not change the caption setting on a separate satellite receiver or Gemini box. If you watch through a box, use that box’s settings instead.

What to do if captions are missing, delayed, or garbled
Caption problems do not always mean the receiver is configured incorrectly. DIRECTV notes that caption availability and quality can depend on the original program provider, guide-information vendors, or local stations. Live news and sports are particularly likely to have inconsistent captions because the program feed may be produced or captioned in real time.
Use this troubleshooting sequence
- Confirm the setting on the correct device. A television’s built-in caption setting, a DIRECTV box setting, and an app setting are separate controls.
- Test another program or channel. If captions work elsewhere, the problem is probably limited to the original program feed rather than your receiver.
- Check the caption language and display options. An unavailable language or unusual text color, size, or style can make captions appear absent or difficult to read.
- Restart the device. A restart can correct a temporary software or settings problem.
- Test again after the restart. Compare a recorded program or regular broadcast with the program that had the problem, if possible.
If captions are missing or garbled across many different programs after you have confirmed the settings and restarted the device, contact DIRECTV support. If only one channel, local station, live event, or program is affected, the source feed is a more likely explanation.
Restart a Gemini device
For a Gemini device, press and release the red button on the side of the device. You can also unplug the device, reconnect it, and allow it to restart fully before testing captions again.
Re-pair a Gemini remote after restarting
If the remote does not respond after the device restarts, hold Fast Forward and Rewind together for approximately two to three seconds. Follow any on-screen pairing instructions that appear. Re-pairing is not normally required just to change caption settings; it is a recovery step if the remote has stopped communicating with the Gemini box.

If you cannot find the Captioning option
- Determine whether the box is using DIRECTV via Satellite or DIRECTV via Internet/STREAM.
- Use Menu on an older satellite or Genie remote, or Home on a Gemini remote.
- Open Settings.
- Check Accessibility, Display, and Captioning.
- Use the labels currently shown on the screen if the box recently received a software update.
The menu may call the feature Accessibility, Captioning, or Closed Captioning. An older printed manual may describe a menu path that no longer matches the software installed on your receiver.

You only need a replacement if the existing remote is lost, damaged, or no longer works. Caption changes can be made with the remote already paired to the box.
Before buying a DIRECTV replacement remote, match it to your service and equipment. DIRECTV recognizes separate replacement categories for Genie, Universal, and Gemini remotes, and compatibility can depend on the receiver model. An official DIRECTV replacement-remote option may also be available, so check DIRECTV’s current replacement process before ordering from a marketplace.
Closed captions versus subtitles
Closed captions can include spoken dialogue as well as important non-speech information such as music, sound effects, or speaker identification. Availability and presentation depend on the program feed. If a specific program does not provide captions, changing the receiver setting cannot create them; the broadcaster or program provider must supply the caption data.

Caption availability and quality depend partly on the program provider, local station, or live broadcast feed. Test another program before assuming the receiver is faulty.
Why do captions work on one DIRECTV channel but not another?
Use the DIRECTV box or app settings when you want to change DIRECTV captions. A television’s built-in caption control is a separate setting and may not control captions generated by the DIRECTV box.
Can I change DIRECTV captions from my television remote?
The Bottom Line
For a Gemini internet box: go to Home > Settings > System > Device Preferences > Accessibility > Captioning > Display. For a satellite receiver or Genie, open Settings and check Accessibility or Closed Captioning; older HD DVRs commonly use Menu > Settings & Help > Settings > Display > Captioning. If captions fail only on certain programs, the program feed—not your box—may be responsible.
