What is The Running Man about?
The film follows Ben Richards, a working-class father whose daughter needs medical care. With few ways to raise the money, Ben enters a popular televised competition known as The Running Man.
The rules are brutally simple: Ben must remain alive for 30 days while professional assassins, known as Hunters, pursue him. The entire chase is broadcast to a mass audience, and the potential reward increases as he continues to survive. What begins as a desperate attempt to help his family becomes a confrontation with the producers, the Hunters, and a society that treats human suffering as entertainment.

The premise preserves the central elements of Stephen King’s 1982 novel: Ben Richards, his sick daughter, a month-long manhunt, professional pursuers, and a culture willing to turn survival into televised spectacle. The film is best approached as a new adaptation of King’s book rather than merely as a remake of the 1987 Schwarzenegger movie.

Is the 2025 film a remake of the Schwarzenegger movie?
Not exactly. Both the 2025 film and the 1987 film are based on Stephen King’s 1982 novel, which King published under the name Richard Bachman. The 2025 production is therefore more accurately described as a new adaptation or reimagining of the novel, with the Schwarzenegger film serving as an earlier screen version.
The 1987 movie was directed by Paul Michael Glaser and starred Arnold Schwarzenegger as Ben Richards and Richard Dawson as host Damon Killian. It takes substantial liberties with the source material in its story details and tone.
The 2025 film shares the novel’s basic setup—Ben, his sick daughter, the televised manhunt, the Hunters, and the 30-day challenge—but should not be treated as a scene-for-scene remake of either the book or the 1987 movie. Viewers comparing the two films should expect differences in characterization, world-building, humor, and political satire.
The Stephen King novel
King’s original The Running Man was published in 1982 under his Richard Bachman pseudonym. Its official synopsis centers on Ben Richards, his daughter’s illness, the month-long attempt to evade the Hunters, and a society that consumes human survival as mass entertainment.

Readers who want to see where the core premise began can read Stephen King’s The Running Man. The book is not a movie tie-in; it is the source novel that inspired both the 1987 and 2025 screen adaptations. It is also a useful choice for readers who want to compare how each film changes the original concept.

Reviews and audience response
The film received a mixed critical response with a more favorable audience reaction. On the latest verified Rotten Tomatoes listing available for this article, it had a 61% Tomatometer score from 311 critics and a 77% Popcornmeter score from more than 2,500 verified audience ratings.
Those figures are snapshots rather than permanent ratings and may change as additional reviews or audience ratings are added. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus describes the movie as slick and energetic while suggesting that it is less inventive than the best-known work associated with Edgar Wright.
Positive reactions commonly focus on the film’s action, pace, and Glen Powell’s charisma. Less enthusiastic reviews tend to argue that the satire and social commentary do not always feel as sharp or cohesive as the premise suggests. Those points are matters of critical interpretation, not objective production facts, but they explain the gap between the film’s moderate critic score and stronger audience score.

What makes this adaptation different?
The most important distinction is that Wright’s film returns to King’s novel as its underlying source instead of presenting itself only as a continuation or remake of the 1987 film. That gives the 2025 version room to revisit the story’s original concerns: economic desperation, institutional power, media spectacle, and the public’s willingness to watch suffering when it is packaged as entertainment.
At the same time, the film is designed as a contemporary theatrical action thriller. Its marketing foregrounds the chase, the escalating Hunters, and the spectacle of Ben’s survival. The result is an adaptation that connects the book and the earlier film while establishing its own tone and visual identity.
