HBO is the premium entertainment brand and television service; HBO Max is the streaming platform that includes HBO programming plus a much broader on-demand catalog. If you want to watch HBO shows online, HBO Max is usually the service you are looking for. If you already pay for HBO through a cable, satellite, or other television provider, you may already qualify for HBO Max—but activation, billing, and eligibility depend on the provider.

What does HBO stand for?
HBO stands for Home Box Office. It is a Warner Bros. Discovery entertainment brand associated with original dramas, comedies, documentaries, films, and premium television programming.
In the United States, “HBO” can mean several related things:
- the HBO brand itself;
- traditional 24-hour HBO television channels, including services such as HBO Family, HBO Comedy, and HBO Latino;
- HBO’s programming in general; or
- an HBO subscription obtained through a television provider.
That last distinction matters. Someone can subscribe to HBO through a cable or satellite company without having a separately billed HBO Max account. Their provider may include HBO Max access, but the viewer may need to activate it using the provider’s credentials.

What is HBO Max?
HBO Max is the streaming service built around HBO. It offers HBO series, documentaries, movies, and other programming through an internet-connected device rather than requiring a traditional television package.
It is also broader than a channel-based HBO subscription. Depending on the market, licensing arrangements, plan, and current catalog, HBO Max can include:
- HBO original series, documentaries, specials, and films;
- Warner Bros. movies;
- Max Originals and other exclusive series;
- DC programming and films;
- family and children’s programming;
- selected unscripted programming from Warner Bros. Discovery brands such as HGTV, Food Network, Discovery Channel, TLC, and ID;
- selected live sports and other live programming; and
- movies and series from additional partners or studios, where available.
The exact library changes over time. A title being associated with HBO or Warner Bros. does not mean it will remain permanently available on HBO Max, and catalogs can differ by country.
Why did HBO Max become Max—and then HBO Max again?
The name changes are the main reason older articles and apps can make this comparison confusing.

- On May 23, 2023, the U.S. service was renamed Max. Warner Bros. Discovery presented it as a broader entertainment platform, with HBO alongside Warner Bros. films, DC, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, children’s programming, and unscripted content from several company brands.
- On May 14, 2025, Warner Bros. Discovery announced that the U.S. service would be rebranded HBO Max again during the summer. As a result, “Max” and “HBO Max” may appear in different places during the transition, including older articles, app listings, provider accounts, and search results.
For current U.S. readers, HBO Max is the appropriate name for the expanded streaming service. Max was not a separate replacement streaming product with a different basic purpose; it was the intervening name for the same expanded service in this naming sequence.

Is HBO Max included with HBO?
Often, but not automatically in every situation. Many people who subscribe to HBO through a participating television provider can use that subscription to access HBO Max. The exact rules vary according to the provider, country, package, and billing arrangement.
Before paying for a second subscription, try this:
- Identify who bills you for HBO. It may be a cable company, satellite provider, internet provider, mobile company, or another television service.
- Check that provider’s HBO Max activation or “watch online” instructions.
- Install the HBO Max app or visit the HBO Max website.
- Choose the option to sign in through a TV or internet provider if that is how you receive HBO.
- Select your provider and enter the provider account credentials requested.
If your provider is not listed, your package may not include streaming access, or you may be using a billing route with different rules. Contact the provider rather than assuming that an unsuccessful login means you need to buy another subscription.
Which HBO Max plans are available in the U.S.?
The official U.S. plan information currently lists three options. The prices below are before applicable taxes and can change, so verify the plan page before subscribing.

Plan features are not interchangeable. For example, “HBO Max” does not automatically mean ad-free viewing, 4K video, Dolby Atmos, or four simultaneous streams. Those features depend on the plan, the title, the device, and technical availability. Selected live broadcasts may also be available in enhanced formats on eligible plans.
How can you watch HBO Max?
You can subscribe or access the service directly through HBO Max, or use a participating provider. Current U.S. options listed by HBO Max include its website, the Amazon Appstore, Cox, Prime Video Channels, Roku, Samsung, Xfinity, and Xumo. The available plans and billing process can differ when a third party bills the subscription.

Supported device families include, among others:
- Amazon Fire TV and Android TV;
- Apple TV and Chromecast;
- LG, Samsung, and VIZIO televisions;
- PlayStation and Xbox consoles; and
- Roku devices and other supported streaming hardware.
For HD streaming, HBO Max’s troubleshooting guidance specifies a minimum download speed of 5 Mbps. For 4K streaming, it recommends 50 Mbps or more. Those figures do not guarantee flawless playback: Wi-Fi congestion, router placement, device age, household usage, and the quality of the particular stream can also affect performance.
What if your TV does not support HBO Max?
You do not necessarily need to replace the television. An external streaming player can provide the app, provided the player is supported and your plan and TV are compatible with the resolution you want.

Choose HBO Max if you want to stream online
HBO Max is generally the better fit if you watch on a smart TV, phone, tablet, computer, streaming player, or game console. It gives you HBO programming in an on-demand interface and adds a wider catalog beyond the traditional HBO channel offering.
Keep HBO through your provider if you mainly watch live TV
A provider-billed HBO package may be enough if you primarily watch the traditional HBO channels through a cable or satellite box. Still, check whether the package includes HBO Max access before paying for a separate streaming plan.
Compare plans if several people watch at once
Basic with Ads and Standard allow two simultaneous streams, while Premium allows four. If your household regularly watches on more than two devices at the same time, the plan limit—not the size of the catalog—may determine the best choice.

Choose based on video and download needs
For ordinary HD viewing, Basic with Ads or Standard may be sufficient. Premium is the relevant option if you specifically want 4K Ultra HD, Dolby Atmos where supported, four simultaneous streams, or a larger download allowance. Not every program is available in 4K or with Atmos, and your equipment must support those formats.
Common HBO and HBO Max misunderstandings
- “HBO” does not always mean a direct streaming subscription. It may refer to a provider-billed television package.
- HBO Max is not an HBO-only channel app. It includes HBO but is designed as a broader streaming service.
- Max was not a permanently separate service from HBO Max. It was the expanded platform’s U.S. name from 2023 until the return to HBO Max branding in 2025.
- HBO Max is not automatically ad-free. The current U.S. lineup includes an ad-supported Basic plan.
- A subscription does not guarantee that every HBO title is always available. Streaming rights and catalogs change.
- Availability is not identical worldwide. Names, plans, providers, prices, sports, and catalogs can vary by country.
