The first Jack Ryan movie introduces Ryan as a CIA analyst who becomes central to a dangerous submarine standoff. Sean Connery plays Marko Ramius, the commander of a Soviet submarine whose intentions become the film’s defining mystery.
Paramount identifies The Hunt for Red October as a 1990 action-adventure film. It is the natural starting point even though Baldwin did not continue as Ryan in the next movie.
2. Patriot Games (1992)

3. Clear and Present Danger (1994)

Ford returns as Ryan, who investigates a covert U.S. operation connected to Colombian drug cartels. The mission becomes more complicated after Admiral Greer falls ill, leaving Ryan with greater responsibility inside the CIA.
At more than two hours, this is the longest of the original five theatrical films. It also offers the clearest example of Ryan operating as an intelligence official caught between official policy, secret actions, and the consequences of both.
4. The Sum of All Fears (2002)

Ben Affleck plays a younger Ryan in a nuclear-crisis thriller shaped by U.S.–Russia tensions. The film resets the character rather than continuing Harrison Ford’s storyline, making Ryan’s age and career position different from the one seen in the two Ford movies.
That rebooted approach is important when watching the films in order: the 2002 movie is not meant to explain what happened to Ford’s Ryan. It is another adaptation of Tom Clancy’s character, built around a new cast and a new stage in Ryan’s career.

With its shorter runtime and origin-story structure, Shadow Recruit works as another accessible entry point. It does not continue the Ben Affleck storyline and does not lead directly into the John Krasinski television continuity.

Where it belongs: Watch Ghost War after the television series if you want the intended John Krasinski continuity. If you are watching only the theatrical Jack Ryan films, you can stop after Shadow Recruit without missing a direct continuation.

Why the Jack Ryan movies do not form one continuous timeline
The five theatrical movies share a character and source-material tradition, but they do not follow one uninterrupted cinematic biography.
