Spotify can download music for offline listening, but it does not normally save songs as ordinary MP3, FLAC, WAV, or M4A files. Spotify Premium downloads remain inside the Spotify app, where they are managed as offline playback data. If you need a transferable file for a USB drive, media server, editing program, or another music player, you need to obtain that file from a legitimate download store, the artist, or the label instead.
First, decide which kind of “download” you need
The word download describes two different outcomes:

These are not interchangeable. A Spotify offline download is not an exported audio file that you can move to another folder or player.
How to download music for offline listening in Spotify
For the supported Spotify workflow, you need an eligible Premium plan. In the Spotify app:

- Open the album, playlist, or other music collection you want to save.
- Select Download.
- Return to the Spotify app later and use its offline playback feature.
To download an individual song, Spotify’s documented approach is to add the song to a playlist and download that playlist. The track is then available through Spotify’s offline system, not as a standalone file in your phone or computer’s regular music folder.
Spotify documents a limit of up to 10,000 downloaded tracks across up to five devices. Offline access also is not permanent ownership: Spotify’s offline-listening requirements include periodically reconnecting the device to the internet so the service can verify access and retain downloaded availability.
Where are Spotify’s offline songs stored?
Spotify’s storage documentation describes downloaded music as being stored in an encrypted format, including on iPhone. In practical terms, the downloads are app-managed data. They are not intended to be opened as ordinary audio files, renamed, copied to a USB drive, or imported into another player.
Changing Spotify’s audio-quality setting does not change this. Even where a lossless download or playback option is available to eligible Premium users, that setting applies to Spotify’s own in-app playback and download system. It does not create a transferable FLAC, WAV, or other file.

Can you save a Spotify song as an MP3, FLAC, WAV, or M4A?
Not through a supported Spotify export feature. Spotify’s official offline download function is designed for listening within Spotify, not for producing a normal audio file.

That means the following are not supported export methods:
- Dragging files from Spotify’s cache: Cached data is not a normal music library, and transferring cached copies to another device conflicts with Spotify’s restrictions.
- Using a Spotify downloader or converter: These tools may attempt to bypass Spotify’s technical protections and may violate Spotify’s user rules or copyright and licensing terms.
- Recording the song while it plays: Spotify’s guidelines specifically identify recording and ripping among activities that are prohibited when not expressly permitted.
- Copying downloads to a USB stick: A flash drive can store ordinary audio files, but it cannot turn Spotify’s encrypted offline data into a playable, transferable song.
Copyright exceptions differ by country, so it is unwise to assume that making a personal recording or copy is lawful everywhere. Spotify’s own agreements and user guidelines also apply independently of local copyright exceptions.
The legitimate way to get an actual music file
If you need a file that works outside Spotify, look for the same release through a store or source that expressly authorizes file downloads. Practical places to check include:

Availability is specific to the artist, label, and release.
- Bandcamp: Releases for which the artist enables downloads may be available in high-quality, DRM-free formats.
- Qobuz’s download store: Purchased releases can be downloaded from the customer’s account, where the release is offered for sale.
Do not assume every song is available as an MP3 or FLAC. Check the individual release page for the available formats, download rights, geographic availability, and any conditions on personal use. A store’s streaming catalog and its downloadable catalog may not be identical.
Step-by-step: from Spotify search to an independent file
- Identify the exact release. Note the artist, track title, album, version, remix, and release year. This helps you avoid buying a different recording with a similar name.
- Search an authorized source. Check the artist’s or label’s store, a legitimate digital download marketplace, or a release page such as Bandcamp or Qobuz.
- Confirm file access before buying. Look for the listed formats and verify that the product is a download rather than streaming-only access.
- Download the purchase. Save it to a folder you control on your computer or mobile device, following the store’s instructions.
- Back it up. Keep a second copy on suitable local storage or another backup location. If you use a USB flash drive for music files, use it for the authorized audio files you downloaded—not for Spotify’s encrypted offline cache.
- Import it into the player you want. You can use the file with compatible music software, a media server, a non-Spotify player, or another device subject to the file format and any applicable license terms.
Using Spotify Local Files with music you already own
Spotify’s Local Files feature works in the opposite direction from Spotify’s offline download function. It does not extract songs from Spotify. Instead, it lets Spotify play audio files that are already legally stored on your device.

On Windows or Mac
- Open Spotify’s settings.
- Enable Show Local Files.
- Select or add the folders containing your legally obtained audio files.
- Open Local Files in your Spotify library.
The exact folder picker and layout can vary between desktop versions, but the important requirement is the same: the audio file must already exist on the computer and you must have the legal right to use it.
On iPhone or Android
In Spotify’s Apps and devices settings, enable Local audio files. Then make the authorized files available through the device’s supported file-management or transfer workflow. Spotify can index those existing files; it does not create them from songs in its streaming catalog.

If your own files do not appear, work through this checklist:
- Update Spotify to the current version available for your device.
- Confirm that Show Local Files or Local audio files is enabled in the relevant settings.
- Check that Spotify is pointed at the folder where the audio files are actually stored.
- Confirm that the files are accessible to the app and are in a supported audio format.
- If the files were already in a playlist, remove them and add them again after changing the Local Files settings.
Reinstalling Spotify can also remove downloaded music and podcasts, requiring them to be downloaded again. This is another practical difference between app-managed Spotify downloads and independent files stored in a folder you control.

What not to confuse with ownership
A Premium subscription grants access to Spotify’s service and its licensed features; it does not generally grant ownership of a transferable copy of every track in the catalog. Similarly, an offline download may continue to play in Spotify while your subscription and the service’s offline requirements remain satisfied, but it is not a permanent file you can keep independently of the service.

For a durable, portable music library, purchase the release in a format that explicitly provides downloadable files, keep the original download, and maintain a backup. For simple travel listening, Spotify’s own Download button is the safer and easier option.

Can I download one Spotify song without downloading an entire album?
Yes, for Spotify’s in-app offline listening workflow, add the song to a playlist and download that playlist. Spotify will make it available through the app, not as an independent audio file.
