Regretting You follows Morgan Grant and her teenage daughter Clara after a devastating car accident kills the two people closest to them: Morgan’s husband, Chris, and her sister, Jenny. The deaths leave both women grieving, but they process the loss in very different ways. Their already strained relationship becomes even more difficult when the tragedy exposes a betrayal involving their family.

Morgan became a mother at 17 and spent much of her adult life putting family responsibilities ahead of her own ambitions. She is protective of Clara, sometimes to the point of being overbearing, because she fears that her daughter will repeat the difficult choices she made as a teenager. Clara wants independence, privacy and the freedom to make her own decisions, creating a familiar but emotionally intensified parent-child conflict.
While Morgan reconnects with Jonah Sullivan, her late husband’s best friend and Jenny’s fiancé, Clara develops feelings for Miller Adams, a misunderstood classmate with an interest in filmmaking. These are not simply two separate love stories. The parallel romances reflect the different ways Morgan and Clara try to move beyond grief, anger and the assumptions they have made about one another.
That makes the film more than a conventional romance. The most accurate description is a family-centered romantic drama: the mother-daughter relationship is the emotional center, while the two romances help Morgan and Clara reconsider trust, forgiveness, independence and the possibility of happiness after loss. The filmmakers have also described romance as important without making it the story’s primary engine; the production press kit provides that broader adaptation context.
Is there an official trailer?
Yes. Paramount Pictures released the official Regretting You trailer on August 5, 2025. It runs for approximately 2 minutes and 32 seconds.
The trailer introduces Morgan, Clara, Miller and Jonah before teasing the accident that changes the family forever. It also previews Clara’s attraction to Miller, Jonah’s longstanding feelings for Morgan, the discovery of hidden family secrets and the shift from a teenage romance story toward grief, forgiveness and reconciliation. It is an official Paramount release rather than a fan-made trailer or a commentary video.
Because the trailer reveals the deaths and hints at the betrayal, viewers who want to go in completely unspoiled may prefer to watch only after reading the spoiler-free synopsis above.

Spoiler-free plot summary
Morgan and Chris Grant are high-school sweethearts who became parents when Morgan was young. Years later, they are raising Clara, whose desire for independence repeatedly clashes with Morgan’s protective instincts. Morgan sees danger in the choices Clara wants to make; Clara sees her mother as controlling and unwilling to understand her.
Clara is drawn to Miller Adams, a classmate whose interest in filmmaking helps distinguish him from the other students around her. At the same time, Jonah Sullivan returns to Morgan’s life through his relationship with Jenny. Jonah and Jenny have a baby and appear to have repaired their relationship, giving the adults’ lives an appearance of stability.
That stability disappears when Chris and Jenny die in a car accident. Morgan and Clara are forced to face the loss of a husband, father, sister and aunt while struggling to communicate. As Morgan investigates what happened, evidence points toward a betrayal inside the family. The revelation changes how she sees Chris, Jenny, Jonah and even her own past.

The aftermath pushes Morgan and Clara in opposite directions before gradually bringing them back together. Morgan must decide whether she can trust Jonah and whether she can imagine a life beyond her marriage. Clara must learn that the adults she idealized are flawed without allowing their failures to determine her own future.

The teenage history
The film begins with Morgan and her friends as teenagers. Morgan discovers that she is pregnant by Chris. At that time, Jonah is dating Morgan’s sister Jenny, although he has unspoken feelings for Morgan. The early history establishes the choices and unresolved emotions that continue to affect the four adults years later.
In the present day, Morgan and Chris are married and raising Clara. Jonah and Jenny have reunited and have a baby named Elijah. The family structure appears settled, even though the old emotional complications have never entirely disappeared.

Clara meets Miller while he is moving a city-limits sign. Their connection develops into a romance, although Miller initially has a girlfriend. His interest in filmmaking gives Clara a way to see him as more than the misunderstood student other people assume he is.

The accident exposes the family secret
Chris and Jenny are killed in a car accident while traveling together. Morgan and Clara are devastated, but the circumstances of the deaths soon make the loss more complicated. Morgan finds evidence that Chris and Jenny were having an affair, meaning that her husband and her sister had betrayed her together.
Jonah also realizes that his relationship with Jenny was not the whole truth. Elijah’s paternity becomes another painful complication. After noticing the baby’s resemblance and understanding the affair, Jonah suspects that Elijah may actually be Chris’s biological child. The film presents this as a painful inference rather than as the long, deliberate paternity deception developed in the novel.
Morgan and Jonah become closer
As Morgan deals with Chris’s betrayal and the loss of Jenny, she and Jonah grow closer. Jonah has loved Morgan for years, and their relationship eventually becomes romantic. Clara discovers Morgan and Jonah together and reacts badly, partly because she is still grieving her father and partly because the revelation makes the adults’ lives feel even more unstable.

Clara briefly lashes out through her relationship with Miller. The two young people are also navigating jealousy, hurt and the pressure of dealing with adult problems before they have the emotional tools to understand them.
The mother-daughter reconciliation
Morgan eventually tells Clara the truth about Chris and Jenny. That disclosure helps Clara understand why Morgan has been so angry, guarded and emotionally overwhelmed. It does not erase the betrayal or the pain, but it allows mother and daughter to see each other more honestly.
Morgan and Clara begin repairing their relationship. They reach the idea that grieving the people they lost does not require them to give up the possibility of a future, and that seeking happiness is not the same as forgetting the dead.
The ending
Clara and Miller reconcile at the movie theater. The film concludes with Miller’s video promposal to Clara and the indication that they will attend the same performing-arts college. Morgan and Clara’s emotional reconciliation is the more important ending: both are allowed to move forward, even though the family secrets and losses cannot be undone.
The precise mechanics of the affair and Elijah’s paternity differ from the novel. The film is therefore not presenting the book’s version of those events word for word; it uses the same broad emotional destination while changing how some revelations are delivered.

How faithful is the movie to the book?
Regretting You keeps the novel’s main architecture: Morgan and Clara’s mother-daughter conflict, the deaths of Chris and Jenny, the affair revelation, Jonah’s feelings for Morgan, Clara and Miller’s romance, the final promposal and the emotional reconciliation. It is broadly faithful in premise and major emotional beats.
It is not a scene-by-scene adaptation. The film compresses the four adults’ history, gives less space to secondary characters and changes several relationship mechanics. The most useful way to describe it is faithful to the broad story, but substantially streamlined and selectively reworked.

Rating and content warnings
Regretting You is rated PG-13 for sexual content, brief strong language, and teen drug and alcohol use. That is the official rating information; the following practical warnings are intended to help viewers decide whether the film is suitable for them.
- Major characters die in a car accident.
- Grief, bereavement and prolonged emotional distress are central to the story.
- The plot involves infidelity and family betrayal.
- Morgan and Clara have intense emotional conflict as parent and child.
- Teen drinking and marijuana use appear in the story.
- Pregnancy and uncertain paternity are discussed.
- There are romantic and sexual situations, although the film is relatively restrained in explicitness compared with its melodramatic premise.
Viewers who are particularly sensitive to sudden death, car accidents, parental conflict or betrayal should know that these are not incidental elements; they drive nearly every major turn in the plot.
Is Regretting You a romance or a family drama?
It is both, but calling it only a romance gives the wrong impression. The family-drama element is the core of the film: Morgan and Clara must rebuild trust after losing loved ones and learning that the adults around them were not who they seemed to be.

The romance is divided between Clara and Miller on one side and Morgan and Jonah on the other. This structure creates thematic parallels between mother and daughter, but it also means the film is not centered on one conventional couple.
Promotional material emphasizes growth, resilience, self-discovery, grief and family reconciliation. A viewer expecting a straightforward romantic comedy or a single-couple love story may be surprised by how much time the film gives to Morgan and Clara’s damaged relationship.
Reviews, audience response and box office
The critical and audience reactions are sharply different. As of the current research snapshot, Rotten Tomatoes lists a 28% Tomatometer score from 89 critic reviews and an 83% Popcornmeter score from more than 1,000 verified ratings. Those numbers can change as additional reviews and audience ratings are added, but they show the film’s basic reception pattern: critics were largely negative, while audiences were considerably more receptive.
Critics commonly objected to the heightened melodrama, rushed emotional developments, tonal shifts and plot mechanics that can feel implausible. Audience reactions were warmer, particularly toward the performances by Mckenna Grace and Allison Williams and the film’s willingness to deliver an emotionally direct tearjerker.
Commercially, The Numbers reports approximately $48.85 million in domestic box office and $90.44 million worldwide against a reported $30 million production budget. Gross revenue is not the same as profit, so those figures should not be used on their own to claim that the movie was profitable. They do, however, provide context for its stronger audience and market performance relative to its critical reception.
The fairest description is critically divisive, audience-friendly sentimental melodrama—not critically acclaimed. Its appeal depends heavily on whether a viewer values emotional catharsis over realism and subtlety.
Is it worth watching?
You are likely to enjoy it if you:
- Already enjoy Colleen Hoover adaptations.
- Prefer emotionally heightened family melodramas.
- Like relationship-driven stories more than tightly realistic plots.
- Want a mother-daughter story with two parallel romances.
- Are comfortable with grief, infidelity and soap-opera-style revelations.
- Enjoy films such as The Fault in Our Stars, It Ends With Us or Nicholas Sparks-style romantic dramas.
You may want to skip it if you:
- Need grief processing to feel psychologically realistic.
- Dislike contrived misunderstandings or engineered plot revelations.
- Expect a conventional romance focused on one couple.
- Prefer subtle portrayals of infidelity and family betrayal.
- Are sensitive to teen drinking, drug use, bereavement or parental conflict.
- Expect the movie to reproduce the novel’s complete backstory and secondary characters.
The main trade-offs

Regretting You is best approached as an emotionally amplified family melodrama with two romances, not as a tightly realistic grief drama. Fans of Colleen Hoover and tearjerker adaptations are the clearest audience; viewers who dislike contrived twists or soap-opera plotting may find it frustrating.

Bottom line: Regretting You is now available on Paramount+ in the United States and offers a faithful-enough version of Colleen Hoover’s central mother-daughter story, even though it compresses the backstory and changes several plot mechanics.
