Alita: Battle Angel 2 is still being discussed by director Robert Rodriguez and producer James Cameron, but it has not received a public release date, production start date, trailer, or formal Disney/20th Century Studios greenlight. Rodriguez said in April 2025 that he and Cameron wanted to make another film and were working on ideas. Cameron later said they were making progress and had committed to making at least one more Alita movie.
That makes the update meaningful for fans—but it is not the same as confirmation that filming has begun. As of August 10, 2026, the sequel remains a creator-backed project in development discussions rather than a dated studio production.
What Robert Rodriguez actually confirmed
Rodriguez made two relevant comments in April 2025, and the distinction between them matters.
The Lex Fridman interview: “We’re working on it”
In the transcript of his April 17, 2025 interview with Lex Fridman, Rodriguez gave the clearest description of the sequel’s status. Asked about continuing Alita, he said, We’re working on it.

Rodriguez also said that:
- he and Cameron both wanted to make another film;
- he had given Cameron material to read;
- Cameron was occupied with an Avatar movie;
- the two filmmakers expected to meet again;
- they had ideas for continuing Alita’s story; and
- the first film had always been conceived with a trilogy in mind.
The relevant exchange begins at approximately 2:45:27 in the transcript. This is stronger than a simple expression of interest because it points to creative development: ideas, reading material, and continuing conversations. It still does not establish that a screenplay is finished, that a studio has approved it, or that production is underway.
The Joe Rogan interview: the Iron City set is still there
In episode 2310 of The Joe Rogan Experience, released April 24, 2025, Rodriguez was asked whether Alita could become a franchise. He replied that he and Cameron wanted to make another one for sure.
He also said that the large Iron City set remained at his Austin studio, describing a set with 20-foot ceilings and seven streets. That is an intriguing production detail, but it is not evidence that the set is being prepared for a sequel. A retained set can be stored, reused, or simply left in place without a film having been greenlit.
The Alita discussion appears around 1:39:39–1:40:06 in the episode transcript. Rodriguez’s comments support the idea that the physical world of the first film could be revisited; they do not amount to an announcement of filming.

The most substantial later comment came from Cameron in an Empire interview reported on November 17, 2025. According to GamesRadar+’s report, Cameron said he and Rodriguez had made what he described as a blood oath
to make at least one more Alita movie.
Cameron said they were also considering a story structure that could lead into a third film and that they were making progress.
He expected the project to become more serious after he completed the mix for Avatar: Fire and Ash. Cameron’s Austin home also puts him geographically close to Rodriguez, which could make future collaboration easier.
This is the latest major sequel-specific statement identified in the public record. It strengthens the case that Alita 2 is more than a fan rumor. But even Cameron’s wording describes intention and progress, not a formal production authorization. There is still no publicly announced title, budget, cast list, filming schedule, or release date.
What Rosa Salazar has said
Rosa Salazar, who performed the title role through performance capture in the 2019 movie, remains enthusiastic about returning. In comments from a Collider interview reported in October 2025, Salazar said the sequel still might happen.
She joked about getting Cameron back to the project after Avatar: Fire and Ash and said she had written and sent him a treatment of her own. The comments were summarized by Cinema Express.

Salazar’s treatment should not be confused with an approved studio screenplay. Her willingness to return is also not the same as a signed sequel contract. No official returning-cast announcement has been made for Alita: Battle Angel 2.

A timeline of the sequel’s public progress
2019: The first film leaves the door open
Alita: Battle Angel premiered in the United States on February 14, 2019. It was directed by Rodriguez, produced and co-written by Cameron, and adapted from Yukito Kishiro’s Battle Angel Alita manga, also known as Gunnm. Rosa Salazar played Alita through performance capture. The official 20th Century Studios listing identifies the film and its studio presentation.

Those unresolved elements clearly leave room for a continuation. The first film also included sequel-oriented characters and story hooks. However, designing a movie with future installments in mind is not proof that those installments have been approved. As The A.V. Club noted, several recognizable performers and characters appeared in ways that could have supported later stories, but that remains evidence of the original film’s ambitions.
December 2022: Jon Landau expresses interest
At the December 2022 premiere of Avatar: The Way of Water, producer Jon Landau told Deadline that the team would love to circle back and do a sequel
and had been talking with Rodriguez. He did not offer a timetable. The comment, reported by ComicBook.com, showed continued interest but not a studio schedule.
Landau also acknowledged the visibility of the fan campaign supporting another film, including advertising in Los Angeles. The campaign—often associated with the Alita Army—demonstrates that the movie has an active audience. It does not, by itself, provide financing or production approval.
July 2023: Cameron refers to “new Alita films”
In a July 2023 Forbes interview, Cameron referred to the new Alita: Battle Angel films
while discussing his move away from a California ranch. The plural wording suggested that more than one film was under consideration. It was not, however, a formal Disney announcement or a release commitment. What’s On Disney Plus reported at the time that Disney had not officially announced the sequels or provided a release timeframe.

April 2025: Rodriguez says the creators are working on it
Rodriguez’s Lex Fridman and Joe Rogan appearances supplied the most direct update up to that point: he and Cameron wanted to continue the story, had ideas, and were discussing material. The Lex interview is the more significant of the two because we’re working on it
describes an active creative effort rather than only a wish to return.
October–November 2025: Salazar and Cameron add support
Salazar’s treatment and continued enthusiasm appeared in October. Cameron’s Empire comments followed in November, adding the strongest public indication yet that the project had not been abandoned. His comments about a possible bridge to a third movie also suggest that the filmmakers are thinking beyond a single sequel, although that does not mean a trilogy has been commissioned.
August 2026: Still no scheduled production
By August 10, 2026, Cameron’s public focus had begun to include questions about how directly he would remain involved in later Avatar films. Reports from GamesRadar+ and MeriStation/AS covered those career comments. A possible change in Cameron’s Avatar workload could make time for other projects, but it is not an announcement that Alita 2 has entered production.
Why has Alita 2 taken so long?
Cameron’s Avatar commitments
The clearest publicly stated obstacle is Cameron’s workload. Rodriguez said in April 2025 that Cameron was busy with an Avatar film. Cameron then said he expected to become more serious about Alita after finishing the mix for Avatar: Fire and Ash. Cameron’s role in the franchise matters because he produced and co-wrote the first film and remains one of its principal creative advocates.

That does not mean Cameron is the only person who could move the sequel forward, nor does it prove that his schedule is the sole reason for the delay. It does explain why a project with creator support has not quickly become a production.
The Fox-to-Disney transition
The first film was released by 20th Century Fox shortly before Disney completed its acquisition of much of 21st Century Fox. The relevant corporate operation is now 20th Century Studios, a Disney label. That change created a more complicated business context for any follow-up, but the public record does not show that Disney rejected the sequel or is deliberately blocking it.
The careful conclusion is that a sequel would require current studio approval, financing, scheduling, and distribution decisions. Neither creator enthusiasm nor the first film’s existing fan base can substitute for those decisions.
The original movie’s finances are not a simple yes-or-no case
Alita: Battle Angel earned approximately $404.9 million worldwide against a reported production budget of approximately $170 million, according to Box Office Mojo and The Numbers.

Those figures do not by themselves establish whether the studio made a profit. The worldwide theatrical gross is divided among theaters and distributors, while marketing, financing, distribution, and other costs also affect the final result. The film was not an obvious blockbuster on the scale of Avatar, but calling it an unambiguous theatrical disaster would also be too simplistic. For a effects-heavy sequel, the financial case is therefore substantial but uncertain: the project would require another large commitment without a guaranteed blockbuster return.

What might the story be about?
The first film’s ending points toward Alita’s conflict with Nova and the mysteries of Zalem. The manga provides additional source material, and the original film was reportedly built with a trilogy in mind. Those facts make many possible sequel directions plausible.
They do not establish an official plot. There is no verified confirmation that the sequel will be called Alita: Fallen Angel, focus on Zalem, bring back Hugo, expand the Motorball storyline, or adapt specific manga volumes. Any article presenting one of those possibilities as settled fact is moving beyond the available evidence.
The same caution applies to characters who died or appeared in altered forms in the first movie. A future film could use flashbacks, digital effects, or other story devices, but no such return has been announced.
How to spot false Alita 2 updates
Fans regularly encounter videos and posts claiming that a 2026 sequel trailer or release date has arrived. Those claims need to be checked against the source, not the thumbnail.
- A YouTube video calling itself an
official update
is not official unless it comes from a verified studio channel or is backed by a studio announcement. - Concept trailers may be fan-made or AI-generated and can combine synthetic audio, recycled footage, artwork, and scenes from unrelated productions.
- A date such as 2026, 2027, 2028, or 2029 should not be treated as real without confirmation from Disney, 20th Century Studios, or a highly authoritative trade report.
- Entertainment sites may use
in development
loosely. A creator saying they are developing ideas is not equivalent to a studio saying that it has formally placed the film in development.
For example, one circulating 2026 teaser is explicitly labeled unofficial and presented as a fan visualization; it is not evidence of a real trailer or release plan. The video itself identifies its unofficial status.
The practical answer for fans
The sequel is not officially dead, and the latest creator comments are more encouraging than the long period of silence suggested. Rodriguez says he and Cameron are working on the idea; Cameron says they are making progress and have committed to at least one more movie; Salazar remains willing to return; and Landau has previously expressed a desire to revisit the story.

But the project has not crossed the most important public threshold. There is no confirmed studio greenlight, approved production schedule, official cast announcement, trailer, or release date. Until one of those formal signals appears—especially a Disney/20th Century Studios announcement—Alita: Battle Angel 2 should be described as creator-backed and in creative development, not as an imminent film.
