Tim Bergling was a Swedish DJ, producer, songwriter, and performer who worked professionally as Avicii. His defining recordings include Levels, Wake Me Up, Hey Brother, The Nights, Waiting for Love, Without You, Lonely Together, and Silhouettes. That musical importance is part of why questions about his death continue to attract attention. But Bergling’s legacy is now larger than the circumstances of his death: it includes his recordings, documentary archive, memorials, and the youth mental-health work established by his family.
What happened to Avicii on April 20, 2018?
Avicii was found dead in Muscat, Oman, on Friday, April 20, 2018. His representative announced the death and asked for privacy for his family. Omani police were reported to have found no criminal suspicion after two autopsies, and contemporaneous coverage said there was no evidence of foul play.
The initial official reporting did not publish a detailed cause of death or method. Later, on April 26, 2018, Bergling’s family released a statement saying that he had been struggling with questions about meaning, life, and happiness, and that he “could not go on any longer” and “wanted to find peace.” The wording indicated what had happened without giving the public graphic details.
Later sources were more direct. Klas Bergling discussed his son’s suicide in an interview connected with the World Health Organization. The Tim Bergling Foundation has also referred to Tim’s death by suicide, and the authorized biography describes the death in the same terms.

The most accurate summary is therefore: Avicii died by suicide; the initial police reporting ruled out criminal suspicion rather than publishing a complete public explanation of the death.

Reports have also differed over whether he was found at a hotel, resort, private residence, or estate. Unless an official primary record establishes the exact venue, “found dead in Muscat, Oman” is the responsible wording.
The health and career pressures before his death
Bergling’s death followed several years in which his health and relationship with touring had become increasingly difficult. These facts provide context, not a proven causal formula.
Physical illness
He was hospitalized with acute pancreatitis in 2012. In 2014, he underwent surgery involving his appendix and gallbladder and canceled performances while recovering. Contemporary reporting connected these health problems with the demands of his career and lifestyle. Reports also discussed alcohol and substance-use problems, but those accounts should not be converted into an unsupported medical conclusion about the cause of his death.
The Los Angeles Times’ account of his health history and the ABC News chronology document the hospitalizations, surgery, and pressures surrounding his work. The 2017 documentary Avicii: True Stories also showed his physical and mental-health struggles and the conflict around continuing to perform.
Why he stopped touring
In March 2016, Avicii announced that his 2016 run of shows would be his final tour and live-performance schedule. He made clear that stopping live work did not mean the end of Avicii or his music: he intended to continue creating in the studio.

His final documented public show, and last recorded live performance, took place at Ushuaïa Ibiza on August 28, 2016. It is more precise to call this his final recorded or documented live performance rather than claim that he never played or made music privately afterward.
Touring was clearly a major part of the documented context, but it is not accurate to say that touring alone caused his suicide. Mental-health and suicide-related deaths are complex, and the available public evidence does not justify reducing Bergling’s death to one event, one illness, or one business relationship.
What the documentaries and biography show
Several later projects help distinguish what Bergling himself said, what was recorded before his death, and what was assembled afterward.
- Avicii: True Stories (2017): Released before his death, the documentary follows his rise, health problems, touring schedule, and decision to stop performing live. It is especially important because it captures his conflict over touring while he was still alive, rather than interpreting that decision only through hindsight. - Avicii – I’m Tim (2024): This documentary uses Bergling’s own voice, archival material, and previously unseen footage to tell his story. - Avicii – My Last Show (2024): The film presents the complete recorded Ibiza performance from August 28, 2016. It offers a rare visual record of his last public show, but it should not be marketed as a prophetic “final goodbye.” That interpretation is hindsight, not something the performance itself proves.
- Tim – The Official Biography of Avicii: Måns Mosesson’s authorized biography draws on interviews with family, friends, colleagues, and Bergling’s own notes. Its publisher and the author’s agency describe an attempt to examine his life and death without sensationalizing the method.
Music released after Avicii’s death
Bergling left behind unfinished and nearly finished material. His family, estate, and collaborators have treated those recordings carefully, making it important to distinguish a posthumous album from an archival release or a compilation.
TIM — June 6, 2019
TIM was built from nearly finished songs and from notes, emails, and messages Bergling left behind. Collaborators completed the tracks while trying to remain close to his musical intentions. It was not an album that Bergling personally finalized in its released form.
Universal Music said that net proceeds would support the Tim Bergling Foundation and related mental-health and suicide-prevention purposes. The label’s release announcement provides the album details.

This official release came from the version performed during Bergling’s final Ibiza show. It is an archival release tied directly to that performance. It should not be confused with Kygo’s 2020 release, “Forever Yours (Avicii Tribute),” which was a separate track.
The 2025 Universal Music announcement identifies the release as “Forever Yours (Tim’s 2016 Ibiza Version).”
AVICII FOREVER — May 16, 2025
AVICII FOREVER is a posthumous compilation, not a new conventional studio album. The collection contains 19 major catalog tracks and the new track “Let’s Ride Away,” featuring Elle King. Its release demonstrates that the Avicii estate continues to curate authorized material, but it should not be confused with a newly recorded Avicii album or with fan-circulated unreleased tracks.

How Stockholm remembers Avicii
Avicii Experience
The Avicii Experience is an interactive museum at Sergelgatan 2, Sergels Torg, Stockholm. It presents Bergling’s life and music through archival material, unreleased content, and an immersive performance environment.
There is an important practical caveat for visitors: the museum homepage lists 2026 hours of 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, while its separate visit-planning page displays different hours. Opening times and ticket availability can change, so confirm directly with the museum before traveling rather than relying on a copied schedule.
Avicii Arena
Stockholm’s former Ericsson Globe was renamed Avicii Arena on May 19, 2021. The change was intended both to honor Bergling and to support a mental-health initiative focused on young people. “Standing Waves”
Standing Waves, installed in 2022 in Stockholm’s Humlegården in Östermalm, is a public memorial to Tim Bergling. The location has a connection to the area where he grew up. Stockholm’s official public-art page describes the work and its setting.

The Tim Bergling Foundation’s work in 2026
Klas Bergling and Anki Lidén established the Tim Bergling Foundation in 2019. Its stated purpose is to promote children’s and young people’s mental health, reduce stigma, strengthen suicide prevention, and make early help easier to access. The foundation’s mission statement focuses on practical prevention rather than treating mental-health discussion as a memorial slogan.
Its work includes:
- School-based mental-health initiatives and educational conversations.
- Meaningful leisure activities as a protective factor in young people’s lives.
- For A Better Day, which gathers young people’s own views about what support they need.
- Dansa För Livet, a school initiative using music, movement, and mental-health awareness.
- Partnerships with organizations including UNICEF Sweden and the Swedish Scouts.
- Public events and concerts, including Together For A Better Day at Avicii Arena.
The foundation’s first activity report, covering 2025, describes youth-voice work, educational reports and conversations, a national youth mental-health manifestation, and the Together For A Better Day concert. Its 2025 report is the best source for that update.
For 2026, the foundation says Dansa För Livet is expanding nationally and that the year’s edition will use “Levels.” It reports that the previous year involved 372 schools and more than 116,000 students. Those figures are the foundation’s own reported figures, not an independently audited national statistic, and should be attributed accordingly. Details are available on the 2026 initiative page.
The foundation has also connected music-making and creative expression with prevention work, including a partnership using music studios with UNICEF Sweden. That approach reflects a central part of Bergling’s legacy: music is being used not only to remember him, but also to create spaces where young people can express themselves and seek help.

Early 2018 reports were necessarily limited to what was known immediately after his death: the announcement in Muscat, the police statement, and the family’s request for privacy. Later family statements, the WHO interview with Klas Bergling, the authorized biography, and the foundation’s own materials added important context.

Similarly, a 2024 explainer may accurately discuss his death, career, retirement, and Avicii – I’m Tim while still missing developments that followed, including the 2025 archival release, AVICII FOREVER, and the foundation’s 2025–2026 initiatives. A current account should separate the historical facts from later developments rather than treating the first news reports as the final public record.
How to discuss his death responsibly
Avicii’s death is a high-profile suicide, so accuracy matters not only for biography but also for public-health reasons. The World Health Organization advises against sensational language, unnecessary location details, explicit method descriptions, and simplistic explanations. The Samaritans’ media guidance similarly recommends avoiding romanticized or speculative coverage.

The evidence supports a more careful conclusion: Bergling experienced serious and overlapping pressures, and his family later identified his death as suicide. The public record does not justify a simpler explanation.
