The recommended viewing order is the release order because the story moves forward chronologically from the first failed park to a world where dinosaurs live outside human control.
Two live-action shorts add context between the films: Jurassic World Dominion: The Prologue and Battle at Big Rock. They are useful continuity pieces, but neither is required for a seven-film marathon.

Universal’s seven-film collection identifies these as the complete theatrical series. Watching them in this order preserves the development of the franchise’s central idea: dinosaurs begin as a controlled attraction, become an ecological and commercial problem, and eventually reshape life on Earth.
1. Jurassic Park (1993)
John Hammond invites paleontologist Alan Grant, paleobotanist Ellie Sattler and mathematician Ian Malcolm to inspect his proposed dinosaur theme park on Isla Nublar. Hammond’s company has used genetic technology to recreate prehistoric animals, but a breakdown in the park’s security systems releases the dinosaurs.

The first film establishes nearly every foundation used by the later sequels: the cloning process, Hammond’s belief that nature can be packaged as entertainment, the danger of incomplete control and the existence of a second island connected to InGen’s work. It is the essential starting point because the later movies treat its abandoned park and failed experiment as historical events, not as a continuity that has been erased.
2. The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)
The second film moves away from the original park and introduces Isla Sorna, also called Site B. InGen bred and raised dinosaurs there before transporting selected animals to Isla Nublar.
Ian Malcolm returns as the central character, joining a research mission to study the island. InGen, meanwhile, sees the surviving dinosaurs as commercial assets. The story therefore expands the premise from “a park has gone wrong” to “an entire dinosaur population exists beyond the park.”
That change matters to the wider timeline. Isla Sorna becomes the second major dinosaur habitat in the series, and the film shows that the problem created by InGen cannot be contained simply by abandoning one visitor attraction.
3. Jurassic Park III (2001)
Alan Grant is persuaded to return to Isla Sorna while searching for a missing boy. The expedition is based on a deception, leaving Grant and the others stranded in the Site B environment with little control over what they encounter.
Jurassic Park III follows the first two films and confirms that dinosaurs continue to survive away from Isla Nublar. Its story is more focused on a rescue mission than on the future of the park business. Ellie Sattler appears in a supporting role, while Grant is again the principal returning character.

The film is the final entry in the original trilogy before the series jumps forward to the reopening of Isla Nublar as a much larger commercial resort.
4. Jurassic World (2015)
By 2015, Isla Nublar has been turned into a functioning attraction called Jurassic World. The park has succeeded where Hammond’s original project failed, but its success creates a new problem: visitors have become accustomed to seeing dinosaurs and want increasingly spectacular attractions.
To draw larger crowds, the park’s geneticists create the hybrid Indominus rex. When it escapes, the resort’s containment systems fail and the park collapses into another dinosaur emergency.
This is not a reboot that discards the 1993 film. Jurassic World treats Jurassic Park as part of its own history, including the abandoned original facilities on Isla Nublar. The movie also shifts the franchise’s emphasis from resurrecting dinosaurs to modifying them for commercial purposes.
5. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018)
Three years after the destruction of Jurassic World, Isla Nublar’s volcano threatens the remaining dinosaurs. Owen Grady and Claire Dearing return to the island in an effort to rescue them.
The crucial timeline development occurs when the animals are removed from Isla Nublar and released into the wider human world. From this point onward, the franchise is no longer mainly about people entering a dinosaur island. Dinosaurs are now entering human environments.

The film also broadens the series’ genetic questions. Dinosaurs are treated as valuable merchandise, an auction is organized around them, and Maisie Lockwood’s existence introduces the possibility of applying similar genetic techniques to humans.
Optional short: Battle at Big Rock (2019)
Battle at Big Rock takes place one year after Fallen Kingdom. This approximately 10-minute short follows a family camping at Big Rock National Park as they encounter dinosaurs living outside captivity.
It is a small story, but it shows the practical consequence of the previous film’s ending: ordinary people now share public spaces with escaped prehistoric animals. The short is not part of the seven theatrical films, yet it fits directly between Fallen Kingdom and Dominion. It is available through Amblin’s official page.
6. Jurassic World Dominion (2022)
Four years after Isla Nublar’s destruction, dinosaurs have spread across the Earth. Owen and Claire are living away from the public eye while trying to protect Maisie, but the wider crisis brings them into contact with the original film’s returning scientists: Alan Grant, Ellie Sattler and Ian Malcolm.
The film connects two threats. The first is the worldwide spread of cloned dinosaurs. The second involves Biosyn’s genetically engineered locusts, which threaten food supplies. Bringing the original and Jurassic World casts together makes Dominion the crossover conclusion to the first six-film storyline.
It is not, however, the end of the franchise. Home-release versions also include an Extended Edition with 14 additional minutes and an alternate opening. That edition is a different cut of the same film, not a separate chapter that needs its own place in the timeline.

Optional short: Jurassic World Dominion: The Prologue
The five-minute prologue has an unusual position. Its opening section takes place 65 million years ago, before the modern cloning story, and depicts prehistoric dinosaurs in their original environment. It then jumps to the present-day setting and previews a world in which dinosaurs live among humans.
For a normal marathon, watch the prologue immediately before Dominion. If you are arranging every scene by strict chronology, only its prehistoric section belongs at the beginning of the entire saga; its modern section belongs shortly before Dominion. In practice, splitting the short apart is unnecessary. The official prologue works best as a lead-in to the sixth film.

7. Jurassic World Rebirth (2025)
Rebirth takes place five years after Dominion. By this point, Earth’s ecology has become increasingly hostile to dinosaurs, and surviving populations are concentrated in isolated equatorial regions.
A new extraction team travels to a former research facility associated with the original Jurassic Park. Its objective is to obtain genetic material from three enormous dinosaur species, shifting the focus toward a new group of characters and a new mission.
The film follows the established continuity but begins a new era rather than continuing Owen Grady and Claire Dearing’s central storyline. David Koepp, who co-wrote the original Jurassic Park and The Lost World, returned as screenwriter.

For most viewers, the cleaner option is to watch the seven feature films in release order, then add the shorts if desired. The prologue and Battle at Big Rock deepen the continuity, but the theatrical films tell a complete and understandable sequence without them.

Why release order is the best order
The franchise’s chronology and release history align closely:
- The first trilogy establishes Hammond’s experiment and the two islands used by InGen.
- Jurassic World reopens Isla Nublar without undoing the original film.
- Fallen Kingdom moves dinosaurs from an island into the global human environment.
- Dominion explores the consequences of that release and reunites the two generations of characters.
- Rebirth advances the timeline five years and starts a new chapter within the same world.
There are no prequels, flashback-heavy installments or alternate universes that force viewers to reorder the main films. Release order gives the intended introductions, preserves the returning-character arcs and follows the story’s increasingly large scale.
