Celebrity rejection is usually private. These nine cases became public because they happened on television, at an awards show, in an interview, or in a social-media post. 1. Jennifer Lawrence gave Justin Bieber a “hard no”
Justin Bieber made his interest in Jennifer Lawrence public in November 2015 during Capital FM’s To Bae or Not to Bae. Asked about her, he called Lawrence “bae for sure,” adding that she was “so sexy” and “so cute.”
Lawrence was later asked about Bieber on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen. Her answer was brief and unmistakable: “I’m gonna say a hard no—but thanks.”

This is one of the clearest examples on the list: Bieber publicly expressed romantic interest, and Lawrence publicly declined it. The exchange was discussed on December 21, 2015. Vanity Fair reported the exchange.
2. Emma Watson’s childhood crush on Tom Felton was not returned
Emma Watson has said that she developed a crush on Tom Felton when they were both working on the Harry Potter films. Watson was approximately 10 to 12 years old at the time. She later explained that Felton knew about her feelings but saw her in a different way: “in a younger, sisterly way.”
Watson described the situation as heartbreaking, but the context is important. This was a childhood crush, not a formal adult proposal or relationship rejection. The story was discussed publicly on The Jonathan Ross Show on September 29, 2012. The official clip is available on YouTube.
3. Selena Gomez was publicly ghosted by George Shelley
In 2013, Union J singer George Shelley had spoken publicly about his interest in Selena Gomez. Gomez responded with a video message for the television programme Friday Download, telling Shelley to call her the next time he was in London.

Gomez later told Capital FM that he never called and joked: “I’m very offended that George didn’t call me.” Shelley subsequently denied that he had simply ignored her.
The most accurate description is not a face-to-face rejection. It was a publicly documented invitation that went unanswered, followed by a public complaint from Gomez. The exchange was reported in October 2013 by Hollywood Life and Capital FM.
4. Rihanna turned Drake’s VMA kiss into a cheek kiss
At the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards, Drake presented Rihanna with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. During his speech, he said he had been in love with her since he was 22.
After the speech, Drake moved in to kiss her. Rihanna turned her face, resulting in a kiss on the cheek rather than the lips. The moment was visible to the audience and cameras, making it one of the most unmistakably public rejections in this collection.

The two later kissed publicly and were romantically linked. The moment took place on August 28, 2016; Vogue covered Rihanna’s reaction and also published a timeline of their relationship.
5. Katy Perry treated Niall Horan like a child
One Direction member Niall Horan openly showed interest in Katy Perry. In a 2017 interview with Fitzy & Wippa on Nova 96.9, Perry said Horan was “always trying to” get her number and flirt with her.
Her response was deliberately comic rather than formal: “I could babysit you. I’m like your mom!” Horan later discussed the comments on The Project, saying he wanted to be Perry’s friend and objecting to the way she portrayed him as much younger.
This was a public dismissal of Horan’s flirtation, but not necessarily a serious or hostile refusal. Perry’s remarks were delivered as a joke and the exchange became part of the entertainment-news cycle in June 2017. E! reported the interview.

Hilary Duff and Aaron Carter dated as teenagers. In 2014, Carter began publicly saying that he still loved Duff and wanted to win her back. In one tweet, he said he would spend the rest of his life trying to improve himself so he could get back together with her.
Asked about the declarations on Watch What Happens Live, Duff did not encourage the idea. “I don’t know what to say about it … it’s uncomfortable,” she said. She added that Carter had been sweet when she was 13, but emphasized how much time had passed since their teenage relationship.
Her response was a public rejection of Carter’s attempt to revive the relationship, rather than a rejection of a new relationship between two strangers. The interview was discussed in October 2014 by CBS News; Bravo published the interview clip.
7. Julianne Hough never heard back from Daniel Radcliffe
Before she became widely known as a dancer and television personality, Julianne Hough worked as an extra on Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. She has said that she developed a crush on Daniel Radcliffe during that period.

For Valentine’s Day, Hough gave Radcliffe a love note and a Valentino Beanie Baby. Her account of what happened afterward was simple: she “never heard back.”
There was no televised confrontation or explicit refusal. Instead, the rejection was the absence of a response to a childhood romantic gesture. Hough discussed it publicly in 2012 on Live! With Kelly, and Us Weekly reported her story.
8. Justin Bieber said Rihanna rejected his request for her number
In December 2015, Justin Bieber posted an old photograph of himself beside Rihanna at the 2011 NBA All-Star Game. He presented the exchange as a mock dialogue:
“Can I have your number please” — Justin

The post made the supposed rejection public, but its evidentiary status is weaker than the other examples. The “Nah” caption was written by Bieber. There is no independent confirmation that Rihanna actually said those words, or even that the photograph captured a genuine request for her phone number.

What can be verified is that Bieber publicly framed the encounter as a rejection. What cannot be verified is whether the exchange happened as presented. The photograph was from February 2011, while the post appeared in December 2015. Nylon covered the post.
9. Drake said Nicki Minaj shut the door in his face
Drake has said that he had a crush on Nicki Minaj early in their time as Young Money labelmates. In an MTV interview discussed in 2010, he recalled bringing food to Minaj after asking whether she was hungry.
According to Drake’s version of the story, Minaj took the food and “shut the door in my face.” He also said that she viewed him as a younger-brother figure rather than a romantic possibility.
This is a public rejection story based on Drake’s own retelling, not a contemporaneous recording or an independently witnessed event. It is therefore best presented as his account of an awkward advance, rather than as a fully documented incident. The story was reproduced by Seventeen.

Two stories that need a qualification
Not every famous “rejection” story survives careful examination. DJ Khaled’s televised proposal to Nicki Minaj, for example, was a promotional stunt connected to the song I Wanna Be with You. Minaj later explained that it was not a genuine marriage proposal, so it should not be presented as a real rejected proposal.
Likewise, Rihanna’s VMA gesture shows that she did not welcome Drake’s attempted kiss in that moment. It does not establish a permanent rejection of Drake, given their later relationship. And the Bieber-Rihanna “Nah” exchange is evidence of Bieber’s joke or public framing, not proof of Rihanna’s exact words.
