Deadliest Roads | India

MoRTH recorded 172,890 road deaths in India in 2023, including 63,112 on National Highways and expressways. Reported NH-44 segments in Haryana and Delhi stand out, but the available evidence does not establish a definitive ranking of India’s deadliest roads.

India recorded 172,890 road deaths in 2023, according to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), which compiles figures submitted by State and Union Territory police departments. National Highways, including expressways, accounted for 63,112 of those deaths. There is no verified, timeless ranking of India’s single “deadliest road”; comparisons depend on the year, segment length and measure used.

What are the deadliest roads in India?

Reporting on 2023 government data identified two particularly lethal stretches of National Highway 44 (NH-44): a 266-kilometre section in Haryana with 715 deaths, and a 30-kilometre section in Delhi with 63 deaths. The Times of India attributed these findings to a SaveLife Foundation analysis. Treat them as reported findings for those specific segments and that year, not a permanent ranking of all Indian roads.

Road segment Length Reported deaths Year and attribution
NH-44, Haryana section 266 km 715 2023; SaveLife Foundation analysis, as reported by The Times of India
NH-44, Delhi section 30 km 63 2023; SaveLife Foundation analysis, as reported by The Times of India

These are fatality counts, not exposure-adjusted risk rates. The available reporting does not provide a complete, verified highway-by-highway ranking or traffic-volume data that would allow a fair comparison of risk per journey.

How many people die on Indian roads each year?

MoRTH’s 2023 annual report records 172,890 road fatalities, including 63,112 on National Highways and expressways. These are official administrative figures based on police submissions. They describe that year and should not be confused with older estimates from other sources or years.

How to compare dangerous highway stretches

A useful comparison states the year, the road and segment boundaries, the segment length, and the number of deaths. Fatalities per kilometre can add context, but that measure alone does not account for traffic volume or distance travelled. Do not compare an entire state’s annual death total with a short road segment’s count as though they measured the same thing.

What is a road accident black spot?

MoRTH defines a National Highway black spot as an approximately 500-metre stretch meeting a crash-history threshold over three calendar years: either five crashes involving deaths or grievous injuries, or ten deaths. This designation helps target safety improvements. It is not a complete ranking of dangerous roads, and a location’s designation does not show that every black spot is equally dangerous today.

Why do serious road crashes happen?

WHO identifies speeding as the most common stated cause of road fatalities and lists impaired driving, wrong-side travel, signal violations, mobile-phone use, fatigue, and failure to use helmets and seat belts among contributing risks. WHO also notes that poor road design and engineering can contribute to crashes. These factors mean prevention requires more than blaming individual road users.

What is India doing to improve road safety?

MoRTH describes a four-part national road-safety strategy: Education, Engineering for roads and vehicles, Enforcement, and Emergency Care. Together, these areas address road-user knowledge, infrastructure and vehicle safety, compliance, and the response after a crash.

Road-safety checklist

  • Wear a quality motorcycle helmet, securely fastened, when riding.
  • Use a seat belt and avoid speeding, impaired driving, and phone use while driving.
  • Stay alert to road conditions and avoid driving when fatigued.

WHO identifies motorcyclists among vulnerable road users and failure to wear a securely strapped quality helmet as a contributing risk. Check the current listing and applicable Indian standards before choosing any helmet.

FAQ

Which is the most dangerous highway in India?

The available research does not establish one definitive, current ranking of India’s highways. A 2025 report on 2023 data identified particularly deadly stretches of NH-44 in Haryana and Delhi, but the findings apply to those segments and that year.

How many people die on Indian roads each year?

MoRTH recorded 172,890 deaths in 2023. The figure is based on information submitted by State and Union Territory police departments.

What is a road accident black spot?

For National Highways, MoRTH uses an approximately 500-metre stretch with a qualifying crash history over three calendar years: five crashes involving deaths or grievous injuries, or ten deaths.
