Everyday life in Kenya’s capital Nairobi

The bustling hustle and bustle of the Kangemi bridge in Nairobi, Kenya is a sight to behold. For years, the bridge has served as a vital link between the slum district of Kangemi and Nairobi’s more prosperous areas. It is a place of commerce where one can find vegetables, hot soup, haircuts, and even a new bed. But now, it is to be torn down.

In a new documentary, viewers are taken on a journey through the Kangemi bridge, exploring the lives and dreams of those who have made this place their livelihood. ARD’s Nairobi bureau chief, Sabine Bohland, first reported on the thriving commerce of the bridge in 2015. In her return five years later, Sabine explores how the people of the Kangemi bridge are coping with the coronavirus pandemic and whether they have been able to fulfill their dreams. With touching interviews and an eye-opening experience, the documentary offers a glimpse into the lives of people whose spirits remain unbroken despite adversity.
