Jane Austen was an English novelist known primarily for her six major novels, which interpret, critique and comment upon the British landed gentry at the end of the 18th century.
Austen’s plots often explore the dependence of women on marriage in the pursuit of favourable social standing and economic security.
During her time, she wrote six novels. The two most popular are Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility. The former has been adapted numerous times.
Austen’s writing stands out for its comedy, self-awareness, and realistic, detailed portrayals of characters and their relationships.
In this documentary, Lucy Worsley explores the different houses in which Jane Austen lived and stayed, to discover just how much they shaped Jane’s life and novels.
The journey takes her across England, as Lucy visits properties that still exist, from grand stately homes to seaside holiday apartments, and brings to life those that have disappeared. The result is a revealing insight into one of the world’s best-loved authors.
