What Does 6-7 Mean? The TikTok Meme Explained

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“6-7” is pronounced “six-seven,” not “sixty-seven.” On TikTok, it usually does not have a stable dictionary meaning. It is a deliberately vague catchphrase: part inside joke, part interruption, and part signal that the speaker understands the trend.

The phrase began with rapper Skrilla’s song “Doot Doot (6 7)”, then spread through basketball edits featuring LaMelo Ball. Its later life on TikTok turned it into a mostly nonsensical expression, often delivered with a see-saw motion of both upturned palms.

Where did “6-7” come from?

The phrase comes from Skrilla’s track “Doot Doot (6 7)”, released in December 2024. The repeated “6-7” lyric became a popular sound on TikTok and Instagram Reels during early 2025.

Its first major visual format was a bait-and-switch basketball edit. A clip would set up somebody saying “six-seven,” then cut to highlights of Charlotte Hornets player LaMelo Ball. Ball’s listed height—6 feet 7 inches—made him an obvious fit for the joke.

That connection explains why LaMelo Ball appears in so many early versions of the meme. It does not mean that “6-7” originally referred to Ball. The song came first; the basketball association developed afterward.

What does “6-7” mean on TikTok?

Usually, it means whatever the person using it wants it to mean—or nothing specific at all. Someone might say it after hearing the number six or seven, interrupt a conversation with it, or add it to a video simply to show familiarity with the trend.

Merriam-Webster classifies the expression mainly as an interjection and describes it as intentionally nonsensical. That lack of a fixed definition is central to the joke. Trying to decode it as though it were a conventional slang term misses how the meme operates.

Question Best-supported answer
How is it pronounced? “Six-seven,” not “sixty-seven.”
Does it have one fixed meaning? No. In viral usage it is generally an intentionally vague interjection.
Why is LaMelo Ball involved? He is listed at 6 feet 7 inches tall.
What does the hand motion mean? It is the recognizable gesture associated with the meme, not a confirmed translation.

Why do people move their hands?

The usual gesture involves holding both hands out, palms facing upward, and moving them up and down in opposite or alternating motions. It resembles a loose see-saw or balancing gesture while the speaker says “six-seven.”

The motion became part of the trend as users copied TikTok clips and tried to make their own videos instantly recognizable. Like the vocal delivery, it is a piece of meme choreography rather than a universally agreed sign language translation.

Some viewers interpret the gesture as “so-so,” “in between,” or “mid.” That interpretation is plausible because the hands appear to weigh two alternatives against each other, but it is not an established definition. The phrase remains fundamentally open-ended.

How LaMelo Ball became part of the meme

Basketball gave the sound an easy visual punchline. Once creators noticed that LaMelo Ball is 6 feet 7 inches tall, they could synchronize the lyric with a highlight, dunk, or close-up of the player.

  1. A video introduces or says “six-seven.”
  2. The audio or image cuts at the expected moment.
  3. LaMelo Ball appears, providing the literal 6-foot-7 reference.

These edits helped the phrase travel beyond people who had heard Skrilla’s song. Eventually, basketball players, sports creators, students, and children began saying “6-7” directly into the camera. In many cases, the goal was not to communicate information but to create a clip that could become the opening of another edit.

Who is the “6-7 Kid”?

The nickname refers to a young basketball fan seen in a widely circulated video shouting “6-7” while making the familiar hand movement. The clip helped push the phrase out of edited sports videos and into everyday public settings, including games and schools.

The “6-7 Kid” was not the origin of the phrase. By the time that video spread, the sound, basketball edits, and gesture were already circulating. The child became an especially memorable representative of a trend that was moving rapidly into real-life speech.

Does “6-7” refer to 67th Street?

There may be a personal or neighborhood reference behind the number in Skrilla’s song. The Washington Post reported that Skrilla connected it with 67th Street in Philadelphia, where friends of his lived. Other explanations have linked the number to Chicago, where he reportedly has family ties, as well as to unrelated street, police-code, or other local references.

These explanations should be treated carefully. Reports and commentators have described the origin as ambiguous, and some street-number theories remain speculative. More importantly, even if the song has a specific personal reference, that does not mean TikTok users are using the meme with that meaning.

The safest distinction is:

  • The song may contain a personal or neighborhood reference.
  • The viral catchphrase has largely detached from that possible original meaning.

Common explanations that get it wrong

“It means LaMelo Ball.”

Not primarily. Ball’s height supplied a clever visual explanation for the basketball edits, but the phrase originated in Skrilla’s song.

“It means sixty-seven.”

In the meme, users normally say “six-seven.” Writing the numbers as “6-7” can make the pronunciation look ambiguous, but “sixty-seven” is not the standard delivery.

“It always means ‘so-so’ or ‘mid.’”

That is one interpretation of the hand motion, not a confirmed definition. Many uses do not express an opinion about quality or uncertainty at all.

“It definitely means 67th Street.”

That is one reported possibility concerning Skrilla’s personal reference, not a universal explanation for the TikTok meme. Claims involving a particular city, police code, or other hidden meaning should be labeled as theories unless directly supported.

“The phrase started with children doing the hand gesture.”

The order was the reverse. The song and online edits came first; the gesture and schoolyard use developed as the trend spread.

Why did the meme become so popular?

“6-7” has several qualities that make a short-form meme travel well:

  • It is short: two numbers are easy to remember and repeat.
  • It has a distinctive sound: Skrilla’s delivery gives the phrase an identifiable audio signature.
  • It supports a visual reveal: the LaMelo Ball edit supplies an immediate punchline.
  • It is flexible: users can place it almost anywhere without needing a complete setup.
  • It rewards recognition: saying it tells other participants that you know the reference.

The contradiction is what makes it effective: everybody recognizes the phrase, but nobody needs to agree on what it means. Dictionary.com selected “67” as its 2025 Word of the Year, citing the term’s widespread use and deliberately indefinable character.

  1. Listen to the pronunciation. “Six-seven” points to the meme; “sixty-seven” may simply be an ordinary number.
  2. Check for the gesture. The raised, alternating palms are a strong sign that the viral catchphrase is intended.
  3. Look for basketball imagery. LaMelo Ball or a height reference may indicate the older edit format.
  4. Separate the song from later usage. The original track may carry Skrilla’s own personal associations, while a TikTok user may be using the phrase purely as a joke.

There is no single English sentence that can replace “6-7” in every clip. Depending on the moment, it can function like an exclamation, a punchline, an interruption, or an intentionally empty response.

Sources and reporting

The phrase’s development has been documented by the Associated Press, The Washington Post, the Philadelphia Inquirer, Merriam-Webster, Dictionary.com, and XXL. Taken together, those accounts support a distinction that is easy to lose in online explanations: the phrase has an identifiable musical origin, but its current meme usage has no single confirmed literal meaning.

Is 6-7 pronounced “six-seven” or “sixty-seven”?

The meme is normally pronounced “six-seven.” It is not usually read as the number “sixty-seven.”

What does the 6-7 hand gesture mean?

The gesture—moving both upturned palms in a loose see-saw motion—is associated with the phrase. Some people read it as “so-so” or “in between,” but that is an interpretation rather than an established meaning.

Is 6-7 connected to LaMelo Ball?

Yes, through basketball edits. LaMelo Ball is listed at 6 feet 7 inches tall, which made him a natural subject for videos timed to the phrase. He helped popularize the meme but was not its original source.

The Bottom Line

“6-7” is a viral catchphrase from Skrilla’s “Doot Doot (6 7).” Basketball edits connected it to LaMelo Ball’s 6-foot-7 height, and TikTok users later turned it into a mostly meaningless interjection with a recognizable hand gesture. Its refusal to settle into one definition is the point: “6-7” works because people recognize the joke even when there is nothing precise to translate.
