These public stories are about more than celebrity families. They also show how LGBTQ+ people have described their identities in their own words, and how parents have responded when those identities became part of the public record.
The list below includes celebrities whose children have publicly identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, nonbinary, queer, or gender-fluid—or whose identity has been publicly confirmed by the child or parent. It does not include celebrities who have only discussed hypothetical support for an LGBTQ+ child.
1. Cher — Chaz Bono
Chaz Bono publicly identified as a lesbian in 1995 before later transitioning and publicly identifying as a transgender man. Cher has spoken about initially finding it difficult to understand his transition, but she has consistently expressed support for Chaz and for transgender people more broadly. Chaz has also built a public career as an actor, author, and LGBTQ+ advocate.
2. Jamie Lee Curtis — Ruby Guest
Ruby Guest came out as transgender to her family in 2020 and discussed her identity publicly in 2021. Jamie Lee Curtis has described supporting Ruby as part of her responsibility as a parent. Curtis has also become a prominent public advocate for transgender rights, using interviews and speeches to discuss the importance of listening to transgender people rather than relying on assumptions.

3. Cynthia Nixon — Samuel “Seph” Mozes
Cynthia Nixon publicly identified her oldest child, Samuel Joseph Mozes—who goes by Seph—as transgender in June 2018. In her announcement, Nixon referred to Seph as her son. The Sex and the City actor and former political candidate has continued to speak about LGBTQ+ rights and the importance of accepting transgender young people.
4. Sade — Izaak Theo Adu
Sade’s son, Izaak Theo Adu, is a transgender man. In 2019, Izaak publicly thanked his mother for supporting him during his transition. Sade later released “Young Lion,” a song widely understood as being connected to her relationship with her son. The singer is known for keeping her private life out of the spotlight, making her public support especially notable.
5. Marcia Gay Harden — Eulala, Hudson, and Julitta
Actor Marcia Gay Harden has publicly said that all three of her children identify as queer. She has described Eulala as nonbinary, Hudson as gay, and Julitta as gender-fluid. These labels can develop as people’s understanding of themselves changes, so current reporting should follow the children’s latest public descriptions rather than treating older terminology as permanent.
6. Robert De Niro — Airyn De Niro
Airyn De Niro publicly discussed her transition in an interview with Them published on April 29, 2025. She spoke about visibility, identity, and the experience of being a transgender woman. Robert De Niro subsequently issued a statement saying that he loved and supported Airyn as his daughter. A basic profile does not require private medical details about her transition.

7. Dwyane Wade — Zaya Wade
Dwyane Wade publicly discussed his child’s gender identity in February 2020, saying that the child was using the name Zaya and she/her pronouns. Zaya later became publicly known as a transgender girl. In 2024, she and Wade launched Translatable, a platform intended to support LGBTQ+ young people and their families.
8. Gabrielle Union — Zaya Wade
Gabrielle Union is Zaya Wade’s stepmother and has spoken publicly about being a proud parent and ally. Union and Wade have described learning to listen to Zaya and follow her lead rather than imposing their own assumptions. Their public discussions have focused on family support, education, and the need to protect LGBTQ+ children from prejudice.
9. Magic Johnson — E.J. Johnson
E.J. Johnson publicly came out as gay in 2013. Magic Johnson said the family had known for years and publicly affirmed his love and support for his son. E.J. has continued to identify publicly as gay and has worked in entertainment and fashion. Recent reporting has also discussed E.J.’s use of they/them or she/her pronouns, so those should be checked against the latest direct interview before publication.
10. Belinda Carlisle — James Duke Mason
Belinda Carlisle’s only child, James Duke Mason, is gay. He has said that his parents were supportive from an early age. Carlisle has spoken about unconditional acceptance and about the discrimination her son could face. James has also become an advocate and commentator on LGBTQ+ issues in his own right.

11. Barbra Streisand — Jason Gould
Jason Gould is openly gay and has discussed his sexuality in interviews. Annette Bening’s son Stephen Ira Beatty is transgender. Bening has said that she is “super proud” of him while emphasizing that Stephen should speak for himself about his life. That distinction matters: a parent can express support without becoming the primary spokesperson for an adult child’s identity or experiences.
13. Warren Beatty — Stephen Ira Beatty
Warren Beatty’s son Stephen Ira Beatty is a transgender man who has also publicly described himself as queer. In a 2016 interview, Beatty called Stephen “a revolutionary” and “a genius.” Stephen has developed a public voice through writing, activism, and commentary, rather than being known only through his famous parents.
14. Rosie O’Donnell — Clay
Rosie O’Donnell has publicly discussed her child Clay, who identifies as nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns. In a 2024 interview, O’Donnell described learning to use the correct pronouns and said Clay had explained that “gender is infinite.” Because Clay is young, responsible coverage should avoid unnecessary personal details and use only information the family has deliberately made public.

15. Jonathan Ross — Betty Kitten Ross
British broadcaster Jonathan Ross publicly said in 2011 that his eldest daughter, Betty Kitten, is lesbian. He said her sexuality was not a concern and that his priority was for his children to be happy and stable. His comments reflected a straightforward parental response: Betty’s sexual orientation was not something he regarded as a problem requiring correction or explanation.

These examples involve different identities. “Transgender” and “nonbinary” describe gender identity; they do not establish a person’s sexual orientation. Someone who is transgender is not automatically gay, straight, bisexual, or queer.
Names and pronouns also matter. Zaya Wade should not be referred to by the name used in some early coverage before her family publicly shared her current name and pronouns. Similarly, writers should avoid deadnames and former gendered descriptions unless they are essential to a specific, documented historical explanation.
Finally, public confirmation does not make every detail of a person’s life public property. Medical treatment, legal records, childhood photographs, and family disputes should be left out unless the person concerned has discussed them publicly and the detail is genuinely necessary to the story.
