His incredible ability to replicate the most sought-after and expensive wines has earned him the title of “The Greatest Wine Forger” by many wine connoisseurs. Born in Indonesia, Kurniawan moved to California when he was just 17 years old and quickly made a name for himself in winemaking. By sourcing bottles from all over the world, he was able to re-create some of the finest and rarest vintages available, using his own unique blends and recipes.
Kurniawan’s fraud was discovered in 2012 when it was discovered that some of the bottles he had sold contained fake labels. He had managed to fool some of the world’s most renowned collectors with his counterfeit wines, which were sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars at auction. After pleading guilty to multiple counts of fraud, Kurniawan was sentenced to 10 years in prison for his crimes.
