Zoë Kravitz has described growing up between two very different homes: a quiet, protective childhood with her mother, Lisa Bonet, and visits with her father, Lenny Kravitz, whose rising fame brought a more public, fast-moving world. At eleven, she moved to live with Lenny. Her recollections hold affection and adjustment together rather than casting either parent as simply right or wrong.
Zoë Kravitz’s early years with Lisa Bonet
Born in Los Angeles in 1988, Zoë was the daughter of two young parents who, for a time, took her with them everywhere. After Lenny and Lisa separated when she was very young, she spent most of her first decade with her mother. Esquire’s 2024 profile describes a warm, creative household in the hills near Santa Monica and Topanga, with music, home-cooked vegan food, no television connection, and no internet. Zoë later emphasized that Lisa worked to protect her privacy.

In a 2026 British Vogue interview, Zoë recalled her mother’s home as quiet and protective. The contrast with her father’s celebrity life was not only about household rules: it shaped how much privacy and ordinary time she experienced as a child.
What it was like visiting Lenny Kravitz
As Lenny’s music career grew, Zoë recalled seeing him only a few times a year. She valued those visits, but described his world as a whirlwind that could feel “shiny” and far removed from her life with Lisa. Fans and other people around him could make it hard to have the time with her father she wanted.

In British Vogue in June 2026, Zoë put that tension plainly: “My dad would come and go, and I really valued my time with him. And so, I think for me, it was more about really wanting time and then all these people would come and try to take him away.” Her account describes a child trying to connect with a parent whose public life often competed for his attention.
Moving to Miami to live with her father
At eleven, Zoë moved to Miami to live with Lenny. She has recalled the change as exciting as well as overwhelming. Compared with her mother’s quieter home, her father’s household felt looser, with television and treats, but adapting to it was not straightforward. In Esquire’s September 2024 profile, she explained: “It wasn’t that my dad didn’t care. He just cared about different things.”

That remark is not a simple judgment of either parent. It captures how Zoë experienced different priorities and routines while moving between households and stages of childhood. Later, after feeling like an outsider in Miami, she asked to move to New York; she said she found people there who felt more like her.
How Lenny described adjusting to parenthood
Lenny has said that having Zoë come live with him required a change in his own life. In a March 2024 British Vogue interview, he said, “When she came to live with me as a child, I had to really alter my life to do better for her.” He also described what he considers essential in a parent-child relationship: “Love, honesty, being present and listening. Vulnerability – the adults too.”

His comments offer his own public account of trying to meet the demands of parenting, while Zoë’s interviews describe what the transition felt like from her perspective. Neither set of remarks provides a complete view of their private family life, but together they show both the adjustment and the care each has spoken about.
Lenny and Lisa’s relationship after separating
Despite their separation, Lenny and Lisa have been described in reporting as maintaining an amicable co-parenting relationship. In Esquire’s December 2023 report, Lenny rejected the idea that being on good terms was extraordinary, saying: “I wouldn’t think of it as this heroic feat. This is just normal to me.” That is his description of their relationship; Zoë’s accounts of her childhood speak separately to what life in each home was like.

What Zoë’s recollections reveal
Zoë’s public reflections portray a childhood shaped by two household environments, her father’s fame, and the practical challenge of finding her place as she grew older. She has spoken appreciatively about time with both parents while also describing privacy, attention, and adjustment as real parts of the experience. The result is a more nuanced picture than a contrast between a permissive father and a protective mother: her own words point to different ways of caring, and to the work of adapting as a family changed.
