YouTube’s updated Erase Song tool, announced in July 2024, lets eligible creators address an audio-related Content ID claim by trying to remove the claimed song while preserving dialogue and sound effects. It is an editing option, not a copyright-strike remedy, and YouTube warns that it may not work cleanly for every mix. Before saving, download a copy of the video: since June 2025, saved Studio Editor changes can no longer be undone with “Revert to original.”
What Erase Song does—and what it does not do
Erase Song is a post-upload YouTube Studio editing option for eligible videos with audio-related Content ID claims. For example, if background music in a documentary clip is matched to a copyrighted recording, the creator can try to mute that song in the claimed section without removing the interview dialogue around it. If all claimed audio is successfully removed, YouTube says the Content ID claim is cleared. Processing may take time, so check the video’s status after saving. YouTube’s current instructions explain the editing options.
A Content ID claim is not the same as a copyright removal request. A claim may affect monetization, visibility, or availability in some regions, depending on the rights holder’s policy. A copyright removal request is a formal takedown process that can result in a copyright strike. Erase Song is intended to address an eligible audio claim; it does not remove a strike or decide who owns the music. YouTube explains Content ID claims, while its pages on copyright removal requests and copyright strikes describe the separate processes.
The update was announced in July 2024 as an improvement to an earlier test version. YouTube described its improved automated audio processing as an attempt to isolate and remove claimed music more selectively. That does not mean perfect stem separation: the tool may leave artifacts or fail to remove a difficult song. 9to5Google, TechCrunch, and Engadget reported the update at the time.

How to use Erase Song in YouTube Studio
On desktop
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and open Content.
- Use the filter bar to choose Copyright, then find the affected video.
- In the Restrictions column, hover over Copyright and select See Details.
- Under Content used, find the relevant claim and select Take Action.
- Choose Erase song, then select whether to erase only the song or mute all sound in the claimed segments.
- Preview the result. Save only if the edited audio is acceptable.
- After saving, allow processing to finish, then check whether the claim and restrictions have cleared.
In the YouTube Studio app
- Sign in, tap Content, and select a video showing a copyright restriction.
- Tap Restrictions, then Review issues in the bottom panel.
- Select the relevant claim and choose Erase song or Mute all sound in the claimed segments.
- Tap Save and check the video’s status after processing.
Labels and placement can vary by app version, operating system, language, and rollout. If the controls are missing in the app, try the desktop workflow. YouTube may show an editing-in-progress status and an estimated processing time in the video list; do not treat the initial save as confirmation that the claim has cleared.
Back up the video before saving an edit
YouTube says Studio Editor changes saved from June 2025 onward cannot be undone using Revert to original. Download the video before editing, and keep the original project file and source audio mix if you have them. Preview closely where speech overlaps music, and do not save until you are willing to keep the result. YouTube’s editing guidance includes the current reversion warning.

Choose the least damaging option that fits the claim
| Option | Best for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Erase song | Removing claimed music while retaining other audio | May fail or leave audible artifacts. |
| Mute all sound | A claimed section with no important dialogue or effects, or a failed song-only edit | Removes speech, effects, and ambience in the claimed time range. |
| Trim out segment | A short claimed passage that can be cut | Removes that part of the video and may disrupt the story or visuals. |
| Replace song | A video that needs background music after the claimed track is removed | Replacement comes from the YouTube Audio Library; it is not any track the creator chooses. |
| Dispute | A claim you have a legitimate basis to challenge | Requires a valid basis and follows a separate claim process. |
| Re-edit and re-upload | A poor Studio result or a mix needing detailed manual work | Requires a new upload workflow rather than editing the existing video. |
Song-only removal is most useful when the music is expendable but dialogue or effects matter. Separation may be harder when music and speech are at similar levels, the recording is live or noisy, the mix has heavy reverb or compression, or several sounds overlap. These are practical risks, not published YouTube performance thresholds. If continuous music matters, replacing it with a suitable Audio Library track may give you a more controlled result. You can browse the YouTube Audio Library.
When to dispute instead of editing away the audio
If you believe YouTube matched the wrong work or timestamps, or you own the music or have a license that covers the use, consider whether to dispute the claim before changing the audio. Erasing a song is an edit, not an appeal: it does not establish that the claim was correct, and removing the sound may give up the practical reason to challenge it. YouTube outlines the dispute process and provides guidance on fair use.

Credit to the artist, buying a copy of a song, or using only a short excerpt does not by itself establish permission or fair use. Dispute only when you have a sound basis for doing so; otherwise, editing, replacing, or removing the claimed audio may be the more appropriate response.

Erase Song is for qualifying audio claims, not every copyright notice. The option may be absent if the claim concerns video rather than audio, the detected material is not treated as a removable song, the video or claim is not eligible for Studio editing, or the claim has moved into another workflow. YouTube does not promise that every creator, video, or region will show the same controls. Check the options attached to the specific claim in Studio.

Creator Music is another YouTube licensing option for eligible creators, but availability and track terms vary; see YouTube’s Creator Music information.
