Published on December 1, 2020, the list reflected what resonated with viewers in the United States during a year defined by the COVID-19 pandemic, social distancing, political upheaval, gaming, home fitness, and a heightened need for connection.
These were top-trending rankings—not a universal list of the most-viewed videos uploaded during 2020, and not a worldwide ranking. YouTube published separate country-specific and category-specific retrospectives, using different methods.
What YouTube’s 2020 rankings measured
YouTube described its principal list as a ranking of the videos that resonated most with U.S. viewers during 2020. The company did not present it as a simple global view-count table. That distinction matters: “trending” can reflect the cultural impact and audience response of a video, while “most viewed” suggests a strictly ranked measurement of raw views.
According to YouTube’s official U.S. year-end report, the ten top-trending videos collectively generated more than 356 million views and approximately 48 million watch hours. The channels behind those videos had more than 175 million subscribers in total.

Why these videos stood out
The list’s variety is significant. Dave Chappelle’s “8:46” addressed racial injustice and the killing of George Floyd. “First Debate Cold Open” used political satire to respond to one of the year’s defining public events. Jeffree Star’s “We Broke Up” and NikkieTutorials’ “I’m Coming Out” were personal announcements from major online personalities, demonstrating the continuing power of creator-audience relationships.
Other entries offered distraction or participation. Mark Rober’s engineering experiment, MrBeast’s giant-firework spectacle, and Dream’s Minecraft challenge were built around curiosity, escalation, and shareability. Dude Perfect’s “Quarantine Stereotypes” directly reflected life under lockdown, while SomeGoodNews offered an explicitly positive response to a difficult news cycle.

MrBeast ranked first on YouTube’s U.S. top-creators list. YouTube’s accompanying commentary emphasized his continued influence and identified gaming as another major force, with Dream, Tiko, JoshDub, and LazarBeam all appearing among the leading creators.
Chloe Ting’s position also reflected the unusual conditions of 2020. With gyms closed or restricted and people spending more time at home, online workout challenges became a major form of entertainment and participation. The ranking does not establish that every viewer used fitness programs or equipment, nor does it identify a particular product associated with Ting.

The 10 U.S. breakout creators of 2020
YouTube published a separate breakout-creators category. It should not be treated as a second version of the top-creators ranking. This list highlighted creators whose growth or cultural visibility stood out during the year:

The distinction between the two creator lists is especially clear in the cases of Dream and Chloe Ting: both appeared in the top-creators and breakout categories, but the categories represented different editorial measurements. SomeGoodNews was recognized in the breakout list after its programming around virtual prom and graduation, while Hyram was associated with skincare commentary. YouTube connected Chloe Ting’s breakout success with at-home workout challenges.
The 10 top music videos in the U.S. in 2020
Music videos were ranked separately from the general top-trending-video list. YouTube’s U.S. music-video ranking was:

This category shows why it is inaccurate to combine every list into one supposed set of “YouTube’s biggest videos.” Music videos had their own ranking, separate from the general U.S. top-trending list and separate again from the creator rankings.
What the 2020 results reveal about YouTube culture
1. Viewers used creators to stay connected
During lockdowns and social distancing, YouTube was more than a source of conventional entertainment. Viewers turned to creators for conversation, commentary, humor, information, and a sense of shared experience. SomeGoodNews was an especially direct example: its first episode and later virtual events used online video to recreate communal occasions that could not take place normally.
The same pattern appears in “Quarantine Stereotypes.” Its subject was not an abstract internet trend but the recognizable behavior of people living through restrictions, isolation, and disrupted routines. The humor worked partly because audiences were experiencing the same circumstances.

2. Gaming became a major personality-driven format
Dream’s Minecraft speedrun challenge was not simply a gameplay upload. Its appeal came from a combination of competition, rules, suspense, recognizable players, and a continuing narrative. The broader creator list reinforced the importance of gaming and gaming-adjacent personalities, including Tiko, JoshDub, and LazarBeam.
YouTube’s separate 2020 YouTube Gaming retrospective supplied a broader global picture. It reported more than 100 billion hours of gaming content watched worldwide in 2020, more than 10 billion hours of gaming livestream watch time, and more than 40 million active gaming channels.
That gaming report also identified the following global games as the leading games by views:
- Minecraft
- Roblox
- Garena Free Fire
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Fortnite
The global gaming report named FGTeeV, Jelly, Flamingo, Robin Hood Gamer, ItsFunneh, LazarBeam, Slogo, Mikecrack, Arab Games Network, and Vegetta777 as its leading creators by gaming views in 2020. It also published separate breakout-gaming and livestream categories. Those names and categories should not be substituted for the U.S. general creator list above.

3. Home fitness became a participatory trend
Chloe Ting’s appearance in both the top-creators and breakout-creators rankings illustrates the strength of home fitness during the pandemic. Workout challenges were easy to discover online, could be attempted without a traditional gym, and encouraged viewers to participate rather than only watch.
However, the ranking supports a conclusion about audience interest—not a claim that a particular piece of exercise equipment was required or endorsed. YouTube’s report identifies the trend and creator, not a specific fitness product.

4. Spectacle remained powerful even when audiences stayed home
MrBeast’s world-record-scale firework video and Mark Rober’s carefully designed bird-feeder experiment represent two different forms of spectacle. One relied on massive scale and anticipation; the other turned practical engineering and animal behavior into an accessible story. Both demonstrate how a clear premise can make a video legible to viewers who may know little about the creator beforehand.

“YouTube’s top videos of 2020” is too broad a description unless the country, category, and measurement are specified. The U.S. list is not a worldwide ranking, and YouTube’s international retrospectives did not all use the same criteria.

Brazil
In Brazil, YouTube stated that its trending-video list was based on local views of videos uploaded in 2020. The methodology excluded music videos, trailers, and children’s videos, and used Google data covering January 1 through November 15, 2020. The Brazilian retrospective therefore cannot be directly compared with the U.S. list.
Japan
YouTube’s Japanese retrospective said its domestic top-trending ranking used multiple factors, including views, shares, and ratings. Its top non-music video was a HikakinTV interview with Tokyo governor Yuriko Koike about COVID-19, followed by home-fitness content from Hina Channel. Japan also published a separate ranking of channels that gained subscribers during 2020. The Japanese report illustrates how both local audience behavior and methodology can change the result.
For accuracy, the safest description of the main ranking is therefore: YouTube’s U.S. top-trending videos and creators for 2020.
How to read these lists today
These rankings are historical records of 2020 platform culture. They should not be used as evidence of current popularity, present-day subscriber totals, current channel ownership, or the current availability of any listed video. A creator’s ranking in a year-end retrospective captures a particular period; it does not predict a creator’s later career or establish a permanent position on YouTube.
