YouTube announced Stable Volume, a redesigned You tab and song search on October 17, 2023. The changes were part of a wider product update that rolled out gradually—not a new August 2026 launch. Stable Volume was meant to soften abrupt loudness changes between videos; You replaced Library as a home for personal content and account information; and Android users could search for a song by playing, singing or humming it.
The announcement covered roughly three dozen viewer-facing features and design updates across watching, listening, navigation, discovery and smart TVs. The three changes in the headline addressed different problems: uneven audio, scattered personal content and not knowing the name of a song. YouTube said the rollout would happen worldwide over the following weeks, so users would not necessarily see every change at once.
Stable Volume: what it was designed to do
YouTube described Stable Volume as a way to reduce “jarring differences in volume” between videos. If one video is quiet and the next is much louder, audio processing intended to stabilize loudness can make the transition less abrupt. YouTube said the feature would be automatically enabled on mobile devices as it rolled out.

A creator’s mix, compression and recording quality still matter, as do the phone or tablet, headphones, speakers and any additional audio processing in the playback chain. Stable Volume cannot be assumed to repair clipped or distorted sound, improve an unclear microphone recording, or raise every quiet video to a fixed level. The 2023 announcement did not specify a loudness target, technical measurements or a detailed account of the processing algorithm.

Contemporary reporting gave this path for the mobile control: start a video, tap the player’s Settings gear, choose Additional settings, then toggle Stable volume. That is historical guidance, not a guaranteed current menu path: YouTube may change labels and layouts, and the setting may not appear on every device, app build, account or type of content. If you do not see it, the original announcement’s mobile rollout does not establish that your particular setup must show the same control.
For listeners, the trade-off is that smoothing differences can make mixed playlists or consecutive clips more comfortable, while some may prefer the dynamics of an unprocessed mix. The effect may also be hard to notice when the videos already have similar loudness or when another device or app is altering the audio.

The You tab: Library and account information brought together
The You tab replaced the former Library tab and brought together personal viewing and account areas. YouTube said it would include watched videos, playlists, downloads, purchases, account settings and channel information. It was announced for web, mobile and tablets, appearing where Library had been.
This was primarily a navigation and organization change, not a subscription tier or a new viewing feature. It offered a central place to look for personal items such as history, Watch Later, playlists, downloads, purchases or your own channel information, though exact labels and placement can vary. YouTube did not promise identical screens across web, Android, iOS, tablets and TVs. Signed-out, supervised, managed or restricted accounts may also show different options.

Because YouTube continues to revise its interfaces, a screenshot or set of instructions from the 2023 redesign should be read as a record of that rollout, not proof that every account still has the same screen today.
Song search: identify a melody without knowing its name
The announced song-search feature let users provide audio by playing a song, singing it or humming it. YouTube said AI would match that sound against the original recording. This was audio-based discovery, rather than simply an improvement to typing a title or artist into the search box. The initial rollout was for Android; the announcement did not promise that it would immediately be available on web, iOS or TV.

Matching a hummed tune to an original recording does not guarantee recognition of every song or the exact version a listener heard. A cover, remix, live performance, instrumental passage, noisy clip or short melody can be difficult to match; even a successful match might lead to an original recording rather than the particular version in a video. The announcement did not provide an accuracy rate or guarantee coverage for background music.

If a search does not work, try a longer, clearer melody in a quieter place. You can also search by a distinctive lyric fragment, artist, language, genre or approximate year, then add terms such as live, cover, remix or instrumental to narrow results. Those are practical alternatives, not requirements stated by YouTube. A dedicated music-identification service is another option if the feature is unavailable or cannot identify the sound.

Other changes in the October 2023 update
The three headline features were part of a broader update. YouTube also announced:
- Pressing and holding the player to temporarily switch to 2× playback speed.
- Larger preview thumbnails when seeking, plus vibration-assisted feedback for cancelling a seek.
- A player lock on mobile and tablets to help prevent accidental taps.
- Animated Like and Subscribe interactions, rotating top comments and animated view and Like counts during the first 24 hours of a new upload.
- A vertical Smart TV menu for information such as descriptions, comments, subscriptions and chapters, as well as cleaner video descriptions on web and mobile.
These were features included in the same YouTube product announcement; they should not be confused with separate YouTube Music updates. YouTube Music has its own app and feature set, and the October 17 announcement was about the main YouTube experience.
Why the date and platform matter
The original announcement is dated October 17, 2023. Its wording about a rollout over the coming weeks describes what YouTube said at that time; it is not evidence of a fresh launch in 2026 or confirmation that each feature is available in the same form today. A later page repeating similar language does not, by itself, establish a new first-party announcement.

Treat that path and the 2023 You tab layout as dated interface guidance. Platform, account and app-version differences—and subsequent redesigns—can affect what a user sees. None of the three features was announced as requiring YouTube Premium; Premium benefits such as ad-free viewing, background play and offline playback are separate from this update.
