Yes, the feature is real—but “launches” is misleading in 2026. YouTube’s current Android help pages call it Song Search; coverage of its YouTube Music rollout used the name Sound Search. It can analyze a hummed or sung melody, or a song playing nearby, and return likely YouTube matches. Public testing was reported in 2023 and a YouTube Music rollout in 2024, so this is not established as a separate new August 2026 launch.
What YouTube’s humming search actually does
In the standard YouTube Android app, Song Search accepts three kinds of input:
- humming a melody you remember;
- singing the melody or lyrics; or
- recording a song that is already playing in a room, car, video or another device.
YouTube then shows likely matches and related content. Depending on the result and app experience, that can include official music videos, other videos, Shorts and user-uploaded performances. The help documentation promises related YouTube content, not a guaranteed exact recording or a single canonical track page.
Google’s general explanation of its humming technology says audio is converted into a numerical representation of the melody and compared with patterns learned from humming, whistling, singing and studio recordings. Google describes that melody representation as a kind of musical fingerprint; it does not publish a complete product-specific explanation of the current YouTube Music implementation. Google’s hum-to-search explanation also says perfect pitch is not required.

How to use Song Search on Android
These are the currently documented steps for the YouTube Android app, not a separately documented YouTube Music menu path.
- Sign in to YouTube.
- Tap Search.
- Tap the microphone icon.
- Allow microphone access if Android asks.
- Tap Song.
- Hum, sing or hold the phone near the playing recording. Recording starts immediately.
- Wait for YouTube to identify the audio; the recording ends when it has enough information.
- Open a result, or tap the X to cancel or return.
The official instructions and no-match behavior are described in YouTube’s Android voice-search help. If you are using YouTube Music, labels and placement may differ from this documented YouTube path; check the controls in your installed version rather than assuming the two apps are identical.
How to get a better match
- Hum the chorus or another distinctive phrase rather than a single note.
- Continue for several seconds. Google’s broader guidance has suggested roughly 10–15 seconds, although YouTube may stop automatically once it has enough information.
- Keep background noise low and hold the phone near the actual recording when identifying a song that is playing.
- Sing the melody clearly instead of speaking remembered lyrics.
- If the first result is wrong, try another section with a different rhythm or melody.
A recording of the original track will generally provide a cleaner recognition signal than an improvised hum, but no comparative accuracy benchmark is established here. Short, incomplete or out-of-tune input, common melodies, noisy surroundings and obscure or regional recordings can all produce a wrong result or no result.

What to do when Song Search fails
The Song button is missing
The control may not be present in your app build, account, language, country or rollout cohort. Update YouTube, confirm that you are signed in, and check again later. The available official documentation does not establish universal availability for every Android user.

The result is close but wrong
Try a different melodic passage or sing the rhythm more distinctly. For a live version, remix or cover, YouTube may surface a more popular or related recording rather than the exact performance.
The result opens videos instead of a music track
That is consistent with YouTube’s documented behavior: results can be videos, Shorts and official music content. The available help does not promise that every search becomes a dedicated YouTube Music track page.

| Tool | Best fit | What distinguishes it |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Song Search / YouTube Music Sound Search | You remember a melody, or want YouTube videos after identification | Accepts humming or singing and connects the result to YouTube’s video ecosystem, including live performances, covers, remixes and user uploads. |
| Google Search hum-to-search | You want broader song information | Google says results can include the likely song, artist information, lyrics and links to listening services. See Google’s explanation. |
| Shazam | A finished recording is playing nearby | Its familiar workflow is dedicated recognition of actively playing music. It overlaps with Song Search, but humming is the notable reason to choose YouTube’s feature instead. |
None of these should be treated as a universal replacement for the others. Choose YouTube when the melody is all you remember or when you want performances and Shorts; choose Google Search for lyrics and broader listening links; choose Shazam when the original recording is audible.

Why the launch story is confusing
The names and dates refer to related but not necessarily identical surfaces:
- October 15, 2020: Google announced hum-to-search in Google Search. Google Blog.
- August 23, 2023: TechCrunch reported a humming-based search test for selected Android YouTube users. TechCrunch.
- July 2024: 9to5Google reported Sound Search rolling out in YouTube Music on Android and iOS. 9to5Google. TechCrunch also covered the YouTube Music song-recognition rollout and its comparison with Shazam. TechCrunch.
- Current official wording: YouTube Help uses Song Search for the Android feature and documents its results and failure message. Discover music on YouTube.
That timeline explains why an article describing this as a brand-new 2026 YouTube Music launch can mislead readers. The feature exists, but availability and labels can depend on the app and rollout.
Does it require a subscription?
No purchase is required to try the identification feature itself. YouTube Premium or YouTube Music Premium may add ad-free, background or offline listening after you find a song, but a current country-specific price is not established here and Premium is not a prerequisite.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I hum a song into YouTube Music?
YouTube Music rollout coverage reported a Sound Search tool that accepts humming or singing. The currently documented step-by-step instructions are for the standard YouTube Android app, where the control is called Song Search; the Music interface can vary by version and rollout.
How long should I hum?
Hum the most recognizable part for several seconds. Google’s general guidance has suggested about 10–15 seconds, while YouTube may stop automatically once it has enough information.
Is this guaranteed to identify any song?
No. It returns likely matches and can fail or select a related recording, especially with noisy, incomplete, common or obscure audio.
The Bottom Line
YouTube’s humming-based Song Search is a genuine Android feature, but it is an established rollout rather than a confirmed new August 2026 launch. Start with YouTube → Search → microphone → Song; use Google Search for broader song details and Shazam when the original recording is already playing.
