Netflix accounts are intended for people who live together in one Netflix Household. If you live elsewhere, you generally need an eligible Extra Member slot or your own account. To keep your My List, recommendations, viewing history, saved games and settings, use Netflix’s Transfer Profile feature before access to the shared account changes.
What Netflix means by a household
A Netflix Household is the primary place where an account is used, along with devices connected to that home’s internet service. People who live together can use separate profiles on the same account. A relative or friend who permanently lives elsewhere is not part of the household just because they are related to the account owner. Netflix describes its account-sharing rules in its sharing guidance.
A second home, college residence or regular stay at another address can create access friction. That is different from a household member watching while traveling: Netflix says members can use their account on personal devices away from home and sign in on a new TV, such as in a hotel or holiday rental. Temporary travel is not the same as ongoing use by someone who lives elsewhere. Verification prompts and access behavior may vary by device and account.
Choose the right way to keep watching
| Option | Who pays? | Can keep My List? | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Remain on the household account | The existing account owner | Yes; the profile stays on that account | People who live together, or a household member temporarily traveling |
| Extra Member | The inviting account owner | Yes, by transferring the profile | Someone living elsewhere when the plan, country and billing arrangement qualify |
| Separate account | The person using the account | Yes, by transferring the profile | Someone who wants independent login and billing |
Extra Member availability depends on country, plan and billing method. Netflix says the feature is not available on ad-supported plans, and some partner-billed or bundled accounts may not qualify. Check the options shown in the account rather than relying on a price quoted for another country or billing arrangement. Netflix’s plan information also reflects that plans and pricing vary by market.

When an Extra Member makes sense
The account owner can pay for an eligible Extra Member slot, while the invited person uses a separate login and password. This keeps payment centralized but makes access dependent on the owner’s eligible account and the Extra Member rules. Netflix’s Extra Member guidance explains the separate login arrangement.
When a separate account makes sense
A separate membership gives the person control over their own login and billing. It may be the workable choice if the owner’s plan or provider bundle does not support Extra Members, the person is in another country, or independent account management matters more than centralized payment. The destination account’s plan, price and available titles may differ from those on the original account.

Transfer your profile before the shared access changes
Netflix’s profile-transfer feature is the supported way to move personalization rather than rebuilding the watchlist item by item. Its documentation lists recommendations, viewing history, My List, saved games, settings and other profile information as transferable. A transfer can go to a new account, an existing account or an Extra Member slot, depending on the flow presented.
- Sign in to Netflix in a web browser while the profile is still available.
- On the Netflix home page, open the profile menu by selecting or hovering over the profile icon.
- Choose Transfer Profile. Netflix originally described this option in the profile icon’s dropdown menu; wording and placement can vary by device, language, account state or rollout. See the Netflix announcement.
- Follow the prompts and choose a new account, an existing account or an Extra Member slot if those destinations are offered.
- Complete the destination account’s email, password and any billing or invitation steps.
- Sign in to the destination account and check that My List, viewing history and recommendations appear on the transferred profile.
Profile Transfer moves profile data, not the original subscription. It does not automatically carry over the account owner’s plan, payment details, other people’s profiles or access to the original account. Titles may also differ if the destination plan or country has a different catalog.

If Transfer Profile is missing
Do not assume that a missing option means the watchlist is unrecoverable. Netflix says transfers can be turned off in account settings. Other possible reasons include a restricted or Kids profile, an account billed through a partner, an unsupported destination account state, or a feature flow not enabled for that account. The account owner can check account settings and Netflix’s help guidance, then contact support if the control remains unavailable.
- Check whether transfers are enabled: the account owner may have disabled them. If available, enable the feature and retry before removing the profile.
- Check profile restrictions: a Kids profile or other restricted profile may not have the same transfer options.
- Check the billing arrangement: a mobile, cable or other package provider may limit account-management options, including Extra Members.
- Check the destination: confirm that the transfer is being directed to an account state Netflix supports in the flow.
- Keep the source profile available: start and complete the transfer before the owner removes the profile or cancels the account.
If you cannot transfer the profile and may soon lose access, take screenshots or manually record My List while the profile is accessible. That is only a fallback: it will not preserve recommendations, viewing history, saved games or settings. Netflix’s cited transfer documentation does not promise a separate bulk export of My List.

Extra Member limits to check first
- The account owner pays for the Extra Member slot; the invited person has their own login credentials.
- Netflix says an Extra Member generally must activate the invitation in the same country where the account owner created the membership. Overseas territories may be restricted.
- Eligibility depends on the owner’s plan and billing method. Extra Members are not available on ad-supported plans under Netflix’s sharing guidance, and certain partner packages may not qualify.
- Profile and simultaneous-device allowances may be limited; the exact configuration can vary by market. Check the invitation and account details before choosing this route.
- There is no dependable single global price. Charges can vary by country, plan, tax and billing provider, so use the amount shown to the account owner.
What reported profile-email changes mean
Recent reports from Tom’s Guide and TechRadar describe a 2026 rollout or test involving unique email addresses for profiles. The cited reporting does not establish this as a universal Netflix rule, and a separate email for a profile does not make someone living elsewhere part of the Netflix Household.
Troubleshoot common access and transfer problems
The transfer started but was not finished
If you entered an email address and password but did not complete the process, Netflix’s Help Center says you may be able to return through a browser using those credentials and select Finish Transfer. Follow the account-specific prompt and confirm the profile in the destination.

The profile still exists, but you cannot sign in
Ask the account owner whether the account or profile remains active and whether Netflix is requesting household verification. If you are a household member traveling or using a new TV, follow the on-screen verification steps. Netflix says household members can watch while traveling; its sharing update describes that distinction.
The owner removed the profile or canceled the account
A removed profile may no longer be available to transfer through the original account. Contact Netflix support promptly if the profile was removed or a transfer did not complete; do not assume screenshots can restore the viewing history or recommendations.
Extra Member is unavailable
Check whether the owner has an eligible plan, whether the account is billed directly or through a bundle, and whether the recipient is in the required country. If the account does not qualify, the practical choices are a separate account or, where accurate, continued use as a member of the same household.
