The serving update began rolling out on May 12, 2025. It does not remove mid-roll advertising or promise fewer ads; it changes which eligible slots are more likely to receive them and gives creators clearer feedback in YouTube Studio.
For the current explanation of eligibility, placement types and Studio controls, see YouTube’s mid-roll ad help page and the original announcement.
What YouTube changed
Ad serving now favors natural breaks
YouTube says its system is intended to favor points where an interruption is less jarring: a pause in speech, the end of a topic, a scene change or another clear break in the audio and visual rhythm. A slot in the middle of a sentence, an explanation, a punchline or an action sequence is considered more disruptive and may be less likely to serve.
YouTube has not published a complete scoring formula or a fixed timing threshold that creators can reproduce. Treat the classification as automated and probabilistic, not as a simple rule such as “insert an ad every ten minutes.”

Studio can flag weak manual slots
YouTube Studio can identify manual slots that are unlikely to serve. The feedback is guidance rather than a guarantee: moving a flagged slot can improve its chances, but even a well-placed slot is only an eligible opportunity, not a promised ad impression.
Some older videos received automatic opportunities
In the original rollout, YouTube said videos uploaded before February 24, 2025 that had only manual slots could be offered additional automatic slots. The opt-out period ended May 12, 2025. This was a historical rollout mechanism, not a new 2026 deadline. Videos that already used automatic placements were described as requiring no change.
“Less interruptive” does not mean fewer ads
The most accurate description is relocation, not removal. YouTube may serve fewer opportunities at poor points and more at natural breaks, while the number of ads a viewer actually sees still depends on video length, eligibility, audience, geography, advertiser demand, viewer behavior and YouTube’s serving decisions.
Mid-roll availability is generally for monetized videos that are at least eight minutes long, subject to channel, account, format and rollout conditions. Eligible live streams have separate controls and behavior. A manual or automatic slot never guarantees that an ad will fill.

YouTube’s stated aim is to balance viewer experience, creator earnings and advertiser value. A viewer can therefore continue to encounter frequent ads even when the breaks are better timed. The change concerns platform-served mid-roll opportunities; it does not govern creator-read sponsorships embedded in the video, Shorts, pre-rolls or post-rolls.
What creators should do in YouTube Studio
Individual slot editing is documented for desktop YouTube Studio. Menu labels can change, so use the current interface when following these steps.
- Open YouTube Studio on a desktop browser.
- Select Content and open the long-form video you want to review.
- Open Monetization and confirm that the video is eligible for ads and that mid-rolls are enabled.
- Review the manual and automatic slots shown on the video timeline.
- Read YouTube’s mid-roll quality feedback and identify slots marked as unlikely to serve.
- Move or remove weak slots. Prefer the end of a completed thought, a section transition, a scene change or a deliberate pause.
- Choose whether to retain automatic slots alongside your manual placements.
- Save the changes, then compare retention and revenue with comparable videos over time rather than judging from one day.
You can toggle mid-roll settings on mobile, but editing individual ad slots is performed in Studio on desktop.

Commentary, podcasts and interviews
Good candidates include the end of a question-and-answer exchange, completion of a topic, or a pause before introducing a new subject. Avoid cutting off a sentence, emotional statement, explanation or punchline. A quiet breath immediately before a revelation may look like a pause but still be a poor editorial break.

Tutorials and demonstrations
Place a break between stages, after a result has been shown, before a new task begins or during a deliberate transition screen. Do not interrupt a sequence viewers must follow step by step, especially while an instruction or warning is being delivered.
Gaming and action videos
Natural points include the end of a match or round, a loading screen, a completed objective or a transition between scenes. Avoid combat, a reveal, a critical play or active instructions. An interruption during the moment viewers are waiting to see an outcome can damage retention even if the timeline is technically busy.
Music, performances and narrative videos
Use boundaries between songs or segments, clear chapter breaks and scene changes. Mid-performance and mid-dialogue placements are especially likely to feel disruptive.
Manual, automatic or hybrid placements?
| Approach | Strengths | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic | YouTube can analyze the video for likely breaks; it reduces maintenance across a large catalog and may find opportunities a creator missed. | The system may misunderstand humor, suspense or emotional pacing, and the creator has less precise control. |
| Manual | Maximum editorial control; useful for scripted storytelling, tutorials, podcasts and carefully structured narratives. | Poor placements may be less likely to serve, and reviewing a large back catalog is time-consuming. |
| Manual plus automatic | Combines creator judgment with YouTube’s additional breakpoint detection and is a sensible starting point for testing. | Requires reviewing automatic suggestions so mechanically plausible breaks do not undermine the video’s rhythm. |
For most channels, hybrid placement is a reasonable default: keep intentional manual breaks, allow automatic opportunities where appropriate, and use Studio feedback and analytics to refine individual videos. It is not a requirement, and automatic placement is not always better.

What the reported “more than 5%” result means
YouTube said a July 2024 experiment found that channels using automatic slots alongside manual slots had more than 5% higher YouTube ad revenue on average than channels using manual slots alone. That is an experiment average, not a promised increase for every creator. It measures YouTube ad revenue, not necessarily total creator income, and results can vary with audience, niche, geography, video length, retention, seasonality and advertiser demand.
Do not infer causation from a single channel’s month-to-month change. Compare similar videos and periods, and account for views, watch time, audience mix and RPM before attributing a result to slot settings.
What happens if you leave existing videos alone?
- Videos using only automatic ads were described by YouTube as requiring no change.
- Videos with manual slots could receive additional automatic opportunities during the 2025 rollout.
- Manual slots judged disruptive may serve less often; YouTube does not say every such slot is categorically disabled.
- If all available manual placements are poor, earning potential may be lower, but YouTube does not guarantee a specific revenue effect.
Troubleshooting common problems
A slot is flagged even though there is a pause
Move it farther from surrounding speech or action and try another nearby breakpoint, such as the end of the preceding thought or the start of the next section. Save the video and review the feedback again. A pause before a reveal or emotionally important statement can still be disruptive.
No mid-roll ads appear
Check that the video is monetized, at least eight minutes long, eligible in your account and has mid-rolls enabled. Review whether all manual slots are weak candidates. Finally, remember that eligible opportunities are not guaranteed to fill; demand and viewer-level ad frequency also matter.

Automatic slots reduce editorial control
Review the video individually, remove automatic placements that damage pacing and retain manual placements for critical narrative or instructional moments. You do not have to enable automatic slots on every video.
Revenue appears to have fallen
Do not attribute the change automatically. Compare the same period with comparable videos and examine views, geography, seasonality, advertiser demand, watch time and RPM. A better-timed break can improve retention while a temporary market or audience change lowers revenue.
Ads still interrupt videos
The update is not an interruption-free guarantee. It changes the probability and quality of platform-served mid-roll placement. Creator sponsorship reads, live-event promotions and other ad experiences are separate. YouTube Premium generally removes ordinary platform ads, but its terms note that some live events or special content may include promotions and that features vary by location, device and plan; see the paid-service terms.
The practical takeaway for viewers and creators
Viewers should expect an effort to move mid-rolls away from awkward moments, not a promise of a lower total ad count. Creators should treat slots as opportunities, place manual breaks around the structure of the video, inspect Studio’s warnings and test automatic placements rather than assuming one mode fits every upload.
YouTube’s change was announced in 2025 and implemented beginning May 12, 2025. In 2026, the useful question is not whether the feature is still coming, but whether each video’s available opportunities support its pacing and audience retention.
